Private lesson: how do you get them to help your serve?

As someone who started tennis as an adult I was also having trouble learning proper serve technique through lessons. On a whim I tried the “feel tennis videos” and found them incredibly helpful in conceptualizing the serve and developing better biomechanics, pace and consistency. FWIW

Tennis lesson videos and videos of pros are more than enough. You need to try various things until it works for you. As an adult learner, you cannot learn what the coaches teaches you, and most rec coaches do not have good serves and cannot teach them either.

If you are an adult and have been playing a few years and haven't got the toss right, it is unlikely to happen. Lessons don't help. There could be small increment progress though which will prevent DFs and that is all you can hope for.
I started playing when I was 10 and never learned to toss properly. When I was playing USTA tournaments growing up I used to break more than hold and still break a fair amount. I know nerves play a large roll in it, but even when relaxed my toss is not reliable. The rest of my motion is pretty strong so if I can just coordinate the toss I'd have a great serve. When I was working with the pro I was serving unbelievable well. I'd like to be able to serve that well all the time

When you are relaxed, like playing with no stakes or taking a lesson or coming back from vacation with low expectations, serves will be great. Then you will want to continue that in a real match, but it won't happen. People will tell you to keep your arm loose. Hey it will be loose when there is nothing at stake. Your driving skills don't change when you are a little stressed - you don't tell yourself to keep your arm loose. The basic problem is balance and coordination. Wiggling your arm and telling it to be loose won't help.
