Private Rancid show + Deliverance + hippy lettuce = 56k no way

Legend
One of the band member's parents celebrated their 50th anniversary last Saturday. His parents live in the sticks above Marysville and he decided to bring the band up to hillbilly land and rock the party. Only a handful of people knew Rancid was coming since they did not want any uninvited people to show up.

I was invited and took a buddy along with me. Originally I was going to take the wife and kid but after warnings of hard drinking, drug taking hillbillys I decided against it (mainly due to the fact I was looking forward to partying my @ss off and I can't do that with wife and kid in tow, lol).

Driving up above Marysville the redneck factor was getting strong. The 'towns' we passed consisted of a couple ramshackle homes/trailers with shirtless, toothless guys sitting on the porch. You could almost hear the banjos playing.

We arrived at our destination, a nicer small town consisting of a small hotel, general store, beer garden, stage and about 15 houses lining the road.

We were greeted by an awesome bbq, all the beer you can drink and an interesting mix of locals, blue grass bands, some city slickers (like us) and a lot of old (literally old) friends of the anniversary couple, probably 100 total. Oh and a couple 6'5"+ scary ZZ Top beard sporting locals who were confirming the arrivals were in fact invited.

The first band up was a husband wife team. She played the base with her left hand, the drums with her right hand and foot, sang and YODALED. They played hilarious songs and were quite good.

After sampling some local produce it was time for some frisbee in this beautiful pasture nearby. My buddy got bit by a deer fly, lol.

Rancid set up their own stuff on this little stage in the middle of nowhere. It was kind of surreal.

The younger members of the audience were stoked.

Rancid proceeded to show the bluegrass hillbillys how the city boys rock.

They covered an Elvis song (blue moon) for the anniversary couple and covered a couple Op Ivy tunes and finished up with Ruby Soho. Twas sick.

Craziest mosh pit I've ever seen.

Murphy chillin' with Lars' amp.

After their set the band chilled with the audience. Very nice guys. My buddy with Lars.

The next band up was a bluegrass band featuring a drunk, stoned, blind singer/harmonica player...and of course a washboard player. They were good, too.

Best thing about drinking with rednecks is they love Budweiser. That left a case of Heineken for me. Seriously, guys fighting over the last bud light when there's 10 Heine's right next to it, lol.

We head down the hill and after about 10 miles we take this dirt road so we can take a bathroom break. We see this huge cement building in this valley in the middle of nowhere, wtf?

We hike down to investigate and find an abandoned carnival. It was like the twighlight zone.

After a while we realized how much noise we were making. Even though we were in the middle of nowhere the sound was echoing really loud. Then we noticed all the 'no trespassing' signs (lol the gate we hopped should have been a giveaway). We hear a truck roaring toward us from the opposite direction. We run through the brush, hop in our car and skeedaddle. Last thing I need is some buckshot in my @ss.

The end.

Very cool story, good memories, my friends are going to die when i tell them about it ... and that little kid should definitely be on the cover of a punk album.

did they play ruby soho?

is lars' speaking voice as scratchy as it is when he is belting out a tune?
They finished with Ruby Soho and it was rockin'.

Lars vocals and guitar work was very good and professional. You see a tatted up punk band and you expect crazy stuff but they are a tight, polished rock band.

Lars' voice was fine. He actually looks better now than 5 years ago since he's sober and working out.

It really was an awesome time.
