Pro results in the 1950s (Paris 1950, Philadelphia 1950 & 1952, Europe 1952, etc ...)

I) Paris Pro, January 1-2, 1950 : apparently not a tournament won by Segura but perhaps a 4-man round robin event won by Kramer though it is not stated anywhere.

Here are some archives (written in italics) that I found in Google (with some characters unfortunately not deciphered) with my comments in bold :

In another match, Pancho Segura of Ecuador mas- tered Frankle Parker, 6-3, 8-6. Gonzales and Segura defeated Kramer and Parker in doubles, 7-9, 64, 6-2.

On January 2, Kramer b. Gonzales again (in Paris duels) 61 63 and Segura d. Parker 63 86
Was this Kramer’s beating of Gorgo really again in Paris ? It would therefore suggest that Kramer and Gonzales had met in Paris before January 2 (so probably on December 31)

Summary of my researches :

1949, December 26-28: Kramer, Segura, Gonzales, Parker played pro matches at Wembley

Then two days in Paris

1950, January 1 : Segura d. Kramer 63 62; Gonzales d. Parker 60 63
1950, January 1 ??? : Gonzales d. Segura 86 119; Kramer d. Parker 60 60
1950, January 2 : Kramer d. Gonzales 61 63; Segura d. Parker 63 86

I haven’t found any comment or result suggesting that the Segura-Kramer match on January 1 was a final of a 4-man tourney. After looking at the results right now I wonder if the Paris event was a round-robin affair held on two successive days (January 1-2, 1950) as the previous Wembley event (3 days), with each man playing 3 matches against the others.

If it’s true the final standings would be as follows :

1) Kramer 2 wins - 1 loss, 4 sets won - 2 lost, 29 games won - 16 lost = 64,444% games won,

2) Segura 2 wins - 1 loss, 4 sets won - 2 lost, 41 games won - 33 games lost = 55,405% games won,

3) Gonzales 2 wins - 1 loss, 4 sets won - 2 lost, 35 games won - 30 lost = 53,846% won,

4) Parker 0 win, 3 losses.

Could anyone check and confirm the 1950 Paris results and scores and dates I have found (and the percentages I estimated) ? Thank you.

So from the information above I can list the following results
F Gonzales d. Kramer 75 63 64
Riggs won the consolation match probably over Kovacs : I guess it was the 3rd place play-off.
S Gonzales d. Riggs 86 108 (probably in the semis), Kramer d. Kovacs 36 63 61
Q Gonzales d. Segura (probably in the quarters), Kramer (top seeded) d. Earn (8th seeded)
There was at least a round before the quarters because Kramer, Earn and Riggs (who d. Mitch Gornto, Jr 97 62) won at least a match before reaching the quarters
Given that Segura met Gonzales as early as the quarterfinals I guess that Segura was only 5th seeded in that March 1950 event.

Of course I would enjoy new results of that event

III) World Professional Indoor Philadelphia Inquirer Tournament, March 21-29, 1952

I found new results contradicting a little what I published some months ago :
March 21, 1952 : Kramer d. Kovacs 75 60; Gonzales d. Segura 62 64
March 22 : Segura d. Kramer 60 1513; Gonzales d. Kovacs 62 63
March 24 : Gonzales d. Kramer 63 64; Segura d. Kovacs 62 62
this was supposed to be the third round of the event : in fact it was the 3rd day of the competition and the conclusion of the first round robin affair when all the players had met each other once.
Then the dates, the results and the scores are less sure :
March 26 : Gonzales d. Kramer 64 64 ("Gonzales again whips Kramer"); Segura d. Kovacs 62 63
March (27 ??) : Kramer d. Kovacs 86 63
March 28 : Kovacs d. Gonzales 06 64 64 (score not sure ??); Kramer d. Segura 46 86 63 (or 63 57 86)
see below about the Kramer-Segura score however in another source (which I don’t remember anymore) I found the contradicting statement "Segura b. Kramer again"

Final standings :

1 Gonzales 5 wins - 1 loss

2 Segura & Kramer 3 wins - 2 losses each

4 Kovacs 1 win - 5 losses

IV) World Pro (inc. US Pro) Championships, Cleveland, May 30 - June 7, 1952

Q: Segura d. Al Doyle 62 75 / Budge d. Jack Rodgers 63 62 / Kovacs d. John ("Jack") March 62 75 (promoter and manager of the tournament) / Gonzales d. (in the quarters ??) John Howard
S: Segura d. Budge 6-0 6-3 6-2 / Gonzales d. Kovacs 6-3 6-3 6-3
F: Pancho Segura (ECU) - Pancho Gonzales (USA) 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-0

PARIS, June 29 (EP)-Jack Kra. mer defeated Don Budge today, 5-7, 6 0, 6-3, ... -Pancho Segura of Ecuador whipped Pancho Gonzales, 6.2, 6-2. ...

So
Paris, June 28, 1952 : Segura d. Budge
Paris, June 29, 1952 : Segura d. Gonzales 62 62 ; Kramer d. Budge 57 60 63

This is the first time that I find a Kramer result in 1952 apart from Philadelphia and Wembley.

So Kramer's very temporary win-loss record in 1952 against the very best pro players is as follows :

Kramer vs Gonzales 0-3
Kramer vs Segura 1-1 (and not 0-2)
Kramer vs Budge 2-0
Kramer vs Kovacs 2-0

and Segura's against Gonzales is 2-5

and Gonzales' against Kovacs is 2-1

For 1952, I have Gonzales and Sedgman co-ranked as no. 1 for the year. Does this sound reasonable?

I guess it's reasonable due to the fact that Sedgman in 1952 of all the players that Andrew Tas has checked so far ranks second in Games Won Percentage next to Tony Trabert's 1955 amateur season. Sedgman was over 66%. Borg has the record for the Open Era with over 66% in 1978.

Sedgman also was very dominant in won lost record, won Wimbledon and the US Championship plus he was runner up in the other two majors.

That being written I still would go with Pancho Gonzalez for number one considering that he won a number of Pro Titles including Wembley and the fact that the Pro Tour was far superior to the amateur tour.

Of course Jack Kramer would dispute my ranking of Gonzalez as number one for 1952 also.

Vic Seixas ranks Sedgman as of the top players of all time. I think he ranks Sedgman in the top five. Sedgman was a very underrated player. It's a shame very few think about him anymore when it comes to the greats.
