Pro Staff Classic Tour Edition specs and variations

Does anyone know if there was a Pro Staff Classic 6.1 Tour Edition released in a 16x18 string pattern? I had a 18x20 and prefer them but am curious about this.

Also, I am wondering if the Tour Edition had slightly different specs from the other PSC 6.1s such as a higher weight? I never compared mine when I had the Tour which was a mistake.

Cheers!

PS I posted this in the Midplus thread in Rackets too, but figured as it has Classic in the title, it would be worth posting it in the Classic section!

the 18x20 was known as tour edition or euro edition, first batch had like yours "tour edition" written on it, later on it was removed.
Its the same frame as 16x18, wilson probably realized that there was a market for 6.1 with a tight pattern and it seems like they were right because they continued making both 16x18 and 18x20 in every line since.
I own every edition of PSC and made a few threads about it before, to me its the closest thing to being perfect.

Cool!

I don't think I've ever seen that "Tour Edition" on any of the ProStaff Classics before, but it looks like this has that more square styled lettering from the earlier generation of this frame. I've got one labeled with that font (hope that's the right term) along with three that have the typewriter shaped lettering. These racquets have held sway over my tennis-playing soul for the better part of two decades.

Maybe perfection is attainable?...

What's your take on which is best? I have PSC, HPS and n6.1, so far I have not had particularly more affection for one or other. Sometimes I think the n6.1 is easier to use but I don't know how much that is in the mind. PJ wise though, it's the PSC everytime, especially with the Tour writing, love it!

Ha ha, since I properly took up tennis as a full time hobby I have only hit with another model of racquet once for ten minutes, so I have little else to reference! For some reason I feel very little need to shop around. Now all I need to find is a hot blond with as much playability and things are sorted.

IMO the classic is the best 6.1 ever made, the original one wasnt even called 6.1, just pro staff classic, it was made in Taiwan and came with fairway leather. Thats the 16x18 version Im talking about, the 18x20 came a few years later (at least in Europe).

The only 16x18s I have are Classics with HPS 6.1s PJ but they are China buttcap, so will probably not have quite the same feel of the Taiwan original you speak of. Will have to give them a spin again sometime soon though. Finding 16x18s seems to be easier here in Europe than 18x20, must have been the most common model. But I get the feeling 18x20s are something of a rarity in the Americas?

I saw pics of your collection, very nice:). All mine are with original pj´s.
Im from Europe too so cant say how rare the 18x20 is over there, but if I remember correctly I think I read that it is very uncommon. The 16x18 clearly was the most common model around here, but I do see the 18x20´s from time to time.
The original Taiwan model is a bit different from the China ones, better IMO but not by much, I can easily go from one to another without any problems. The latest edition of them with a slightly different pj and black butt cap plays quite different from the rest. Its not completely foam filled like the ealier editions and that gives it a different feel and flex, feels a bit more hollow in the shaft. The first edition "pro staff classic" before the named it 6.1 is very hard to come by these days, but its so nice, unfortunately I only got one left, actually one of the frames I got in 92 from my sponsorship with wilson back in my junior days:).

I'm getting there with my own collection of PSC which by the way will not be displayed anytime soon as I'm using them all. I bought a mint condition PSC Tour Edition 18 x 20 from **** and now alternating it with my 16 x 18's. I now have: 1 PSC ( without the 6.1 and the si - 18 x 20 -Euro issue)
1 PSC ( Tour Edition 18 x 20 )
2 PSC ( 6.1 si )
My first impression of the Tour Version is it's got more directional control than the 16 x 18 but they both have the same feel and in MHO the 16 x 18 are more versatile because it handles flat and tops spin better than the 18 x 20.

what's with the bare handle? do they come without a grip and you have to put it on?

When I bought the stick it had a really tattered grip so I removed it. Sadly, the seller had told me the wrong grip size; two sizes too big :-/ So that's why it had to go, otherwise I would have kept it.

Thanks again for the info big bang. One of my best mates has the 6.1 version of the Classic (got a feeling its a white butt cap though) so hopefully will snag that from him and hit/compare the two.

In fact, when I took up tennis it was his frame I used as a reference point, so I have him to thank for suggesting the classic!

If you only have one left, frame it!

PS Did you ever see the frames Equijet had of a prototype HPS 6.0. It has half the Classic PJ, half HPS?

It could be the most beautiful thing......

no problem Im glad to share:)

If you play all the versions side by side you will see that there is small differences. Pro staff classic came first (made in Taiwan), then came 6.1 s.i, then they dropped the "s.i" and called it 6.1 classic, both versions made in China, all 3 of them with white butt cap. The last version was still called 6.1 classic but with black butt cap and a bit different pj.

I thought about framing my original one, but cant help hitting with it from time to time, its so nice and feels a bit more flexible than the rest of them.

I have seen those pics before, it looks so sick! would love to get my hands on that one:).

Thanks again Big Bang for all your wisdom and expertice on our beloved PSC. I wonder if Wilson will ever go back to basics with the cheaper 80% graphite and 20 % kevlar/weaved kevlar combo and create a whole new line of rackets meant for the PUREST MARKET?

I thought the pallet looked really large in your pic. Is it a 4 5/8" grip?

I have one called "6.1 Classic s.i.". Is it the "6.1 s.i" you mentioned?

yes it is, s.i stands for swing-index, a term they later dropped. Head frames still have kinda the same, just L5, L6, L7 etc. Seemed pretty stupid that the classic should have exactly 6.1, but I doubt most ppl know the story behind it:)

It had lost its grip size sticker from the side. But when I removed the dirty old grip (not original leather,) there was a alrge '5' on the pallet so presumably it was a Grip 5 or 4 5/8ths. Tbh it felt even larger than that!

I use 4 3/8 normally, but got 2 of my classics in 4 5/8, I took the grip off and put 2 overgrips on the bare handle and its not that far from my normal size, I would say something between 4 3/8 and 4 1/2. Of course its closer with just 1 overgrip but its too hard on the hands for me (I get blisters very easy).
Whats size do you prefer Indiana?.

I started off with a 4 3/8ths stick, felt really good apart from volleys, then I got a number of 4 1/2 so switched to them. I always add an overgrip on top, and felt there was not quite as much looseness in my grip and wrist with the 4 1/2 + overgrip, but I've stuck with that for a year and a half. Only in the last couple of months have I begun to switch back to 4 3/8ths. Maybe my volleys are a little loose (some movement on contact occasionally) but overall I think it has aided my game.

hi big bang,
I have PSC6.1 with Fairway leather and white buttcap (saying 'Taiwan') but without Tour Edition. You state here that 'Tour Edition' is first batch of 18x20 PSC... from other hand as I know first batch was produced in Taiwan then moved to China. Do you think my racket from the first release (made in Taiwan, but without 'Tour Edition' statement)?
from other hand, I own one more PSC with Tour Edition. It feels a bit headlight and less hefty... is it batch from China?
Please clarify

Hi Lavs,
could you please post a picture of the buttcap in which is clearly readable the 3 letters code written on?
It's a good way to understand if it's a first taiwanese release.

Greetings,

Giovanni

I can make a photo of course but not sure if 3 letters abbreviation will be clear on them.

so I just had a look -

on Tour Edition (18x20) racket - fairway leather is more red, white butcap with W and UFN above it and nothing below it. Fonts of 'Pro Staff' are more narrow

on normal (without TOUR EDITION written on hoop) 18x20 racket - fairway leather is more dark, white butcap with W and SJR above it and TAIWAN below it. Fonts of 'Pro Staff' are wider than in Tour Edition.

Here is a picture of my Taiwan, the code is SAZ,written in a different
font compared to the Tour I own which is UFN,it's thicker.
I've been told that Taiwanese have all SXX code.

Hi Lavs,
I've tried to post the picture without luck.
Could you help me?
I've followed all the steps suggested!

  1. With your pictures on your computer, please ensure they are sized appropriately (800x600 is a good resolution). Also ensure they are in a web-friendly format, such as .jpg, jpeg, gif, (and less common .png). RAW photo data, or BMPs are NOT encouraged, as they are uncompressed, and take up a lot more space.
  2. After resizing and compressing (into .jpg or .gif), upload your photos to some sort of host. If you do not have your own, personal web space, I suggest using free photo uploaders such as http://imageshack.us, http://tinypic.com or http://www.photobucket.com
These sites offer free hosting for your photos, as well as instructions on how to access them through other sites.
  3. When inside your thread, click the "insert picture" button using the editor.
    fsguide1.jpg

A pop up window will appear, asking you for the "URL" of your picture. If you are using your own webhost, insert the address of your picture. If you are using a free uploading site, such as photobucket, or imageshack, insert the URL that was provided to you.
  4. If you inserted the URL correctly, the image should show up when you hit "OK."

hi,

you can just post here direct link to you pics which you uploaded on those sites.
I am really curious to see your PSC rackets... to compare with mine

Hi lavs,
I've been away for a long time from the forum!
Here is my email address,if you want you can write and I'll send you the
PSC 6.1 pictures of the racquet that I have.

Hi guys, I am a rabid PSC user. The twist is I use the Classic 6.1 Stretch 18 x 20 cut down to 27". I had to mod the racquet a lot since it was originally an L5, I play best with an L3. So pallet sanding and measuring, extra weight in the handle, two overgrips only and the rubber Wilson thingy at the top of the grip. This is my preferred setup.

Strung with SPPP 17g at 35lb. Yes, low tension full poly bed. I string my own, finally learned the trick to stringing poly. Kiss elbow probs goodbye and hello atom smasher.

The Quiver:

Thor - ProStaff 6.1 Stretch at 27" 18x20 SPPP #35, 352 grams, 7pt HL, L3 formerly L5 Black Butt Cap replaced with clear soft rubber butt cap due to pallet shaping 8/10

Loki - ProStaff 6.1 Stretch at 27" 18x20 SPPP #35 362 grams 7pts HL, L4 Black Butt Cap. Needs modding to reduce pallet size but very playable. 8/10

Clark - Stock ProStaff 6.1 Stretch at 28" 18x20 361 grams, unknown string very tight. Unplayable though this is the stick that got me started on the PSC. Waiting for modding bug to hit me. This is an L3, perfect stock grip for me, this will be a great project. 7.5/10

Wutang - ProStaff Classic 6.1 16x18 SPPP #35 398 grams. That's 14 oz. I had to add weight to get 7pts HL. I'll need to add more after I shave the pallet down, currently L5. I can actually play well with this. 8/10

Area51 - Babolat Pure Control Team (mid 2000's) 16x20 SPPP #35 345 grams L3. This plays similar to my modded PS 6.1 Stretches which sadly are wearing down. This is probably the direction I'll go when my PSC's are no longer playable. 9.5/10

Can't post attachments, would like to show the before, during and after shots of PS 6.1 Stretch getting the mods. Was scary the first time around, now second nature. Custom is the way to go. If anyone wants photos let me know.
