Hello TW,
I have been experimenting with a lot of strings recently.. My main racket as of now is the Babolat Pure Storm Tour GT 2009, in stock form, no weight modifications.. My original string is a full bed of Babolat Pro Hurricane Tour 17 at 55-58.
However, recently I have decided to experiment, a little with strings and string tensions.. I began by trying the ever-so-popular Gut/Poly hybrid. I had my racket strung with Babolat VS Black Gut 16 in the mains at 61 and my usual Pro Hurricane Tour 17 in the crosses at 56. At first this felt very strange (considering I had never played with anything besides full poly up until then); however after a few days (not sure if tension dropped any), I really adapted to the feel, and the string job felt really nice, especially on groundstrokes (SW forehand, and 2H backhand), as I felt as I had so much power and all that good stuff..
However, the problem is the slice: This is the stroke that saves me when I am lazy, or when I'm in desperate situations. With my full poly setup, no matter how hard I sliced, it would always be well-in, with a high margin for error. With this new Gut/Poly setup, when I slice, the ball really springs off and flies, almost always sailing long. Very aggravating.
Today, I had my second racket strung with my old Pro Hurricane Tour 17 in the mains at 52 and some random wilson multi at 56. Even with this foreign setup, my slices felt so good as normal, as I felt very comfortable and "at home" with this setup, when I sliced. Of course, with other groundstrokes, the feel is clearly lacking from the stringjob with natural gut, and I obviously had less power.
So, my question to you incredibly knowledge people is: At this point, what should I do? I really enjoy most of what I'm getting from this Gut/Poly build, but the slices are really feeling strange, unnatural, and wild. Would stringing at a higher tension tame this power? What will I lose? What should I try?
I have tried changing my motion and all, but it just all seems very unnatural. The slice, particularly the backhand slice, is one of my most natural strokes. Yet, when I do it with this setup, it almost never fails to sail long.
What should I do? If you have any questions, I'll try to respond to them as soon as possible.
As always, thanks in advance!
