In an effort to recruit the big name stars to participate in Davis Cup on a regular basis, I am proposing the following changes:
Keep the 4 singles and 1 doubles format, but the new rule is that all 4 singles players and 2 doubles players be different. This would allow each Davis Dup match to be played entirely in 1 or 2 days instead of 3. It would mean each country's "superstar" could only play 1 match (hopefully "superstar" participation would increase with less of a time commitment and less of a physical drain from only playing 1 match). More players would be involved (Spadea would not have gotten shut out like he did last year, but you never know PMac might still have chosed Donald Young over Vinnie, just because).
In my mind, the greatest tennis country is not the one that has the single best player, but has the greatest depth. This new format would not allow a Becker, Borg, Federer, or Roddick to carry a team by winning 2 singles matches and potentially the doubles as well.
This would make surface selection more interesting as you would have to look for your team's (and your opponents) strength down the entire line (no difference for Spain or Argentina though).
What do you think?
