Pros on Facebook

As well as a ttwarehouse member, I am also a Facebook member. Since I am a keen tennis player and have been around tennis for almost ten years I have got to know various players my age who have had a go at making at as pros. None of these players have got very far but it is interesting to see the links they have which go almost all the way to the top of the rankings. Alot of the British players I know will have met low ranked British pros.

After clicking on one of my friends 'friends lists', I noticed that amongst her friends was Jamie Murray. She also had many other British pros listed as friends but many of you wont have heard of them since they are low ranked.

I then clicked on Jamie Murray's 'friends list' and two names that stood out to me where British no3 Alex Bogdanovic and American Amer Delic and his doubles partner Eric Butorac. Again, there was a whole host of lower ranked players in there as well but are not worth mentioning.

When I clicked on Delic's 'friends list' I found the following US players: Shenay Perry, Alex Kuznetsov, Ryan Sweeting.

I didnt bother clicking on those names because I figured that if there were higher ranked players on Facebook such as Roddick, Blake or even someone like Fish then they would have been on Delic's list of friends.

Its interesting to see how a chain can be made from me, someone who plays tennis 2 or 3 times a week, to Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Champions and Grand Slam players. I have to say I was disappointed not to find Jelena Jankovic listed as one of Murray's friends  .

Turns out Donald Young is on Facebook too. My friend looks like she added him today.

I know these guys travel all over the world and meet alot of people but these tennis players have hundreds of people listed as friends. Its ridiculous! Young has 786! He's only a kid for god's sake, as if he knows all those people and i really doubt my friend has ever really met him and if she has then they certainly wont be friends. These guys just seem to be adding every single person that they have ever walked past from tournaments back from when they were 10 years old or something stupid.

Yep I hit with some top juniors and it's pretty cool that after a few clicks, I find myself at the top 100 of the ATP!

I requested to be friends with Benjamin Becker, but he never accepted the request. :(

Have you heard about the "six degrees of separation" theory?

It says the following: Consider the entire network of acquaintances on Earth. Each person is a node and each friendship/acquaintance is a connection. The theory suggests that if you pick two people from the Earth randomly, you can get to one person from the other in an average of six connections. Thus, a totally random person (out of the six billion population) is, on average, only six friends away from you.

I don't have to add that this applies to you and any tennis player as well.

There are some interesting experiments made on this subject, including the "Find Satoshi" puzzle (google this if interested), and there's also one based on the Facebook network.

Anyway, it's just an interesting thing that might chill your surprise a bit :)

Justin adds everyone on Myspace except the fake player pages. He was even adding the porn chicks until I put a stop to that and required captchas for his account. He's neglecting that page, I should remind him to check in sometime this week.

Gasquet too. Can't I just make a facebook like Roger Federer , put up his profile picture and join the Switzerland group? I highly doubt all of these are real pros. But I'd have to say Isner looks to be legit.

There definitely are plenty that arent real. For example I have searched for Roddick I while ago it came up with plenty of results, whether that was lots of people with the same name or lots of people making fake ones I dont know, my guess it was a bit off both.

Lower profile players though I reckon are real, like Kirilenko and Isner. Also, the fact that my friend who is a lower ranked tour player added Kirilenko means its a good chance that one is real.

Its not the first time ive revived this thread but I feel this is worthy news of bringing it back to life once again. After looking at my friends facebook page today I noticed one of her friends was NOVAK DJOKOVIC!!! Surely this isnt the one and only? (If you arent sure what I am talking about then read the first post in this thread, it explains the whole thing.)

My friend is home from her travels for a couple of weeks at the moment so when I get the chance I will ask her if its really him.

Also, if you search for Novak Djokovic in the search function on facebook it doesnt come up with the Novak Djokovic that my friend has added. Not sure if this means its genuine? After all, if there is a way of blocking people from finding you when they search your name then Novak may well have done that, I mean he wouldnt want thousands of people adding him as their friend.

yeah im friends with him too. After the NCAA's last year I sent him a message telling him tough luck and stuff. We also happened to take lessons from one of the same guys so I mentioned him. He actually sent me a message back, I was shocked.

And now for the subject of this post: John Isner= Him

I don't know about facebook but I am on something similar, it's called Bebo, I don't know if any of you have heard of it, but apparently the "real" Rafa Nadal and "Roger Federer" are on it and they are the only pro tennis players and the only Roger and Rafa. They're profiles are on private but I added them and they accepted. I talked to "Rafa" on msn and kept plagueing him about tennis so he blocked me on msn and bebo. I also kept asking "Roger" loads of questions about his racquet, and training and all of this and he blocked me aswell

I highly doubt these are real but "Roger" is only on when theres a break in the tournaments and I met an austrailian journalist on bebo who swears that they are real and is apparently meeting with Rafa in London during Wimbledon, so I don't know.

Thoughts?

Facebook is more of a high school / college scene (and now getting a little older because of college graduates)

It feels a little more private and it's not "looking for love add me as a friend" like myspace is.

is facebook that much better than myspace?
I have found many profiles to claim to be Nadal's on myspace.

I think Myspace is more private, but its so gawdy with the personalized layouts and such. Facebook has been opened to everyone and it's now become a money making venture for the owners so it has it's problems too I suppose. I use Bebo, but hardly anyone I know does.
