pulled my hamstring!!

i've pulled my hamstring.... yesterday, i felt a small groin pull at the end of a long run, but then it went away..... today, playing tennis, a couple of really small pull feelings, so i stretched it, and then minor-moderate pull and that was it for me.

just going to rest it, ice it and ibuprofen.... see how it is tomorrow.

hadn't run or played tennis that much in last two weeks, so maybe i overdid it.

also, can dehydration affect this??? i think so, as i've had seized quad before from dehydration, although seized vs. pulled seems different... seized was much more worrisome at time, but then it went away. pulled isn't going away but not that bad anyhow.

balance your weight and/or flexibility routines: work both front and back of legs.

i actually did alot of quad and hamstring work in the winter, but i haven't kept it up since spring hit and i can run outside.... is hamstring pull from too strong or weak relative to quads??? i could guess but it could be wrong.

i just iced it for 30 minutes and it feels like it'll be gone tomorrow, and i can start exercising in 3 days or so. i think it'll feel fine tomorrow, but i'll use caution.

oops, it's now morning and it's not gone!!! but i'm not too worried, i'll just ice it, use ibuprofen and do gentle stretches for the next week.

If you "really" pulled it you would know. I pulled mine playing softball running out a ground ball and it felt like someone shot me in the back of the leg. It took me about 3-4 weeks to heal from that, so hopefully yours is not that bad. Good luck.

couch, i researched this and it said on almost all sites i checked that you can recover from minor pulls in 2-3 days.... so it could be matter of terminology/semantics... you either had a major pull or tore the hamstring. surprised it felt like "you were shot" and then you were healed in 3-4 weeks.... anyhow, it was totally the feeling of pulling a muscle (wrenching feeling), which happens to us all the time but it was pretty bad (like oops, something really bad just happened, but not intense pain like you mentioned)

and speaking of intense pain, i know the feeling like "you were shot", i ruptured my achilles 85%-90% 3 years ago and that's exactly the feeling and the specific recovery was probably 5-6 months and getting back to 85% was probably 18-24 months, and if i was NFL running back, i'd have had to retire.

You do everything right, just go easy on ibuprofen, don't take it until it's really emergency (and then still use it in moderation), you body is not trash can :D
You have to work out , once the pain is gone, like it hate it, but this is the only way to stay injuries free, I learned it a hard way :(

tom-selleck,

I think you're right; it's a matter of terminology/semantics. I guess I would say you "tweaked" it or possibly strained it. Whether you tweak it, or pull it, it's still tearing of the muscles. Ones to a larger extent/degree and requires a longer recovery time.

I would say most tweaks or strains would take a few days to a week to get over (like you said). Stretching and ibuprofen will help with these. Pulls, on the other hand, would take weeks to recover from and would require considerable rest.

Couch, I now know what you mean by feeling like you got shot.
I was running down a ball and was leaning way out to try to stab at a ball when my hamstring snapped. It was such a bizarre feeling.
Almost like when you expect to slide on a clay court but it grips your foot instead. I think I might have done a flip and landed on my back.

Intense pain, but then it went away a little bit so even though I knew I was injured I tried to play on.. until 5 more minutes when I did another flip from having to lean on that leg again. Decided that it was ridiculous for me to be out there on my back after every point and threw in the towel.

Feels like it is going to be a few weeks and even then I am going to worry about re-injuring it afterwards.
