Pure Control Tour-WOW!

Funny you should mention that, I came away thinking that it was a nice option in between the prestiges and the 6.1's in terms of feel and pop.

Definitely like the prestige better on slices and touch shots and the utter dominance of the sledgehammer 6.1 on groundstokes and the pure control was a nice mix of the two. Much easier to serve with the pure control, just grabs the ball better and gets some nice pop. And I think this is what attracts me so much to this stick.

The prest are the king of touch, few other sticks can match the 18x20 feel of them but the lack of stability is always what got to me.

So overall what's is closest to it? Please say a Pro tour 630 lol! I'm hoping!

Here's my review of the PCT!

I demoed the PCT extensively for about three weeks and I'm happy to say I just ordered one. I played with the PSGT for about a year and although I liked it, it seemed too much of an "all-rounder". It was good from all aspects from the court but wasn't ever great, and I longed to find a racket that would highlight my strengths. I demoed many rackets and almost settled on the Prestige Graphene MP until I tried the PCT. Just when I thought I was done with Babs!

Bio: 28 years old, NTRP 4.5, semi-western grip, 1HBH, baseliner mainly when I play singles, like volleying in doubles. I probably hit with less topspin than most people my level, I enjoy using pace and angled shots

Previous racket: PSGT 6g lead from 10-2, 8g in handle, RPM blast@51#
Demo racket: PCT RPM Dual@58#/Gamma TNT2@55#

Serves: 9/10; Serves have never been my strong point but I found serving with this racket very, very easy. I was confident and my second serve had a very nice kick that threw a lot of my opponents off. How much of this improvement was from the added heft of this racket and/or the string combination I don't know, but it was a big plus for me.

Returns: 9/10; stable as a rock. I don't usually play against very hard servers but the crisp response of this racket allowed me to re-direct serves using their pace well.

Groundstrokes: 10/10; I loved playing aggressive baseline tennis with this racket. The control was as good as it gets and again, my confidence was sky high. The response was very tight and the crispness of the PCT is what really did it in for me. My PSGT was a little too plush and pillowy for my liking, so this added feel really did it in for me. My BH slices were decent, topspin was easy to access, don't really have any complaints in this department.

Volleys: n/a; I didn't get to volley as much as I'd like to, but the few volleys I did put away with this racket, I see no real problems or stability issues

Notes: Although I thoroughly enjoyed this racket and would like to attribute everything to the improvements between this line and the previous PS line, there were a few differences between the testing controls. For one, I have never played with a multi/poly combo, nor have I ever strung any of my rackets over 55#. Maybe the higher tension in my demo is the reason for the higher crispness and feel I felt? I strung up the PCT I got with the same specs as the demo anyway, maybe that's all it takes to take my game to the next level?

And one last thing, my experiences recently with RPM Dual has been awesome!

Cool my gripes of the old PST was the dead upper hoop and how dull it felt. Was very disconnected with the ball. How's the new stick in comparison?

Ha! No way! Too much flex carbon in this one.

If I were to place it in a lineage, it would be closer to the 6.1's with a tad more touch and comfort.

If I had to pick one, I'd say a crisper version of the nCode. Definitely not crisp like the Kfactor or as damp as the 1st gen BLX.

We are talking about babs and Wilson's here. The play test PC I received had a 61ra. Just out of curiosity, the guy at my local shop then spec'd out their PC demo and it landed at 65ra strung.

Ahhhh the N Codes those were good sticks not as stiff as the Ks so that's a huge relief.

That's the thing, Bab's site state that the PCT is 69ra unstrung, how it gets to 65 or 61 or 63 like some have said is beyond me. Either there are major qc issues or the upper hoop is still too soft like with the PS series and are way too tension sensitive.

So the PCT is close to the N95 18x20?

Nope, the n6.1 16x18, in fact, that's the stick it most reminds me of, except a little more connected to the ball, ie- not quite as soft and a deader upper hoop than the 6.1

The flex ratings TW gives are an average, so you flex out four sticks two at 61 and two at 65, your average would be 63. 69 is what the bab site says unstrung, correct?

And yes, still string sensitive.

EDIT: I'm not the perfect candidate to ask, as I didn't have any experience with the prior storms but compared to the sticks I enjoy playing with, a dead upper.

The 16x18 is very flexy and powerful... PCT=N95 16x18???

The issue is lots of differing ra from posters. It shouldn't be like that.

Enjoy playing with dead upper  omg! n I can't play with those kidda sticks wahhhhh!

Pulled the trigger, expecting one to arrive tomorrow :)
I had demoed it I liked the feel, precision and manoeuvrability.

The only issue is the dead-ish upper hoop - thinking about addressing it with 2-3 grams of lead (10-2 or 12 positions ?) and a leather grip. This will also add approx. 5 SW points. My aim is to keep it easy to swing.

Cool my gripes of the old PST was the dead upper hoop and how dull it felt. Was very disconnected with the ball. How's the new stick in comparison?

The PST was very plush to me, which caused it to have a lack of feel. The PCT feels somewhat more stiff, which allows me to "feel" the ball somewhat better and hence the increased control

What strings and tension have you guys tried with this racket and what were the results? I have always been a low tension poly (48-52#s) guy but recently have increased it to about 56-59#s.. with remarkably better results for myself

I've been stringing my PCT at 48-50 with full poly and enjoying the results. I really like the crisper feel of the PCT over the PST which I've used for the last 4-5 years.

Ah yes, that was the number one change I've noticed too

Too many opinions based on the past (you hit differently than 2 years ago), and not based enough on strings and tension.
"this racket twists and has a tiny sweetspot" can be polar opposite with strings 15 lbs softer.

Completely agree with your statement.

Some sticks are and some sticks aren't.

When I reviewed the PC, I described it as 'plushy'-ie, not quite plush but gettin there. Had it flexed out at my local shop and it came out to 61ra strung, after an average of three measurements.

Then out of curiosity, he flexed out the store's demo and it was 65ra strung.

Guess it depends what batch you get.

All in all, I think babolat did a great job on the PC's. I could use the tour version and not even miss my racquets or yearn for more.

I guess TW matching service is a must with babolat frames...

Even at that you probably want to have an idea of the spec you want in mind, the three I had matched were perfectly matched to one another. However, they were night and day different form the racquet I loved. The PCTs I ended up receiving were absolute wrist breakers, just all of the mass straight in the handle...oddest thing ever...I took it to League this sunday and everyone (including the HL racquet players) were amazed by how unwiledy this thing was.

Am I the only one who felt that new pure control is lots softer than pure storm?

The Pure Control is a bit more plush than the Pure Storm GT. I find the Pure Control to have a more solid feel to it than the regular Storm.

However, the Tour version is not as soft as the Pure Storm Tour GT for some strange reason it also is a tad harder to swing even though it has a lower SW.

Received my PCT, placed a leather grip and 4 grams of lead at 57.5mm and it plays wonderfully. The upper part of the hoop came to life, overall stability is better, feel is enhanced and balls come heavier off the stringbed with very little toll on manoeuvrability.

While the free Hurricane string I put on with is not terrible, I will probably have to play around with strings and find a better setup.

Finished my 3rd day of testing the frame. I agree with all of those who have said that they found the PCT to be easier to wield and swing than the PSTGT. I also concur with the few posters that have expressed the new crispier feel that you get from the PCT as opposed to the plush, muted feel of the PSTGT (I much prefer it this way now). I used the PSTGT for about a year and had a honey moon period with it before starting to lose my ability to dictate and play offensive tennis due to its high SW + static weight. My forehand stroke take back also changed as a result of the sluggishness of the frame (much shorter, less whip). Consciously, I knew, but I stuck with it until I was seeing negative results in my game and matches. The PSTGT was a very solid frame, very easy on my arm/comfortable and I was able to hit a deep rally ball with ease as well as absorb pace and redirect it. Furthermore, the plow through and stability from the PSTGT was top notch. The biggest difference I have found with the new PCT is how much easier it is to swing through the point of contact on all shots. Additionally, I am able to hit angles with the frame that I could never hit with the old PSTGT because of the PCT's lower SW. Also, my serve is much better with the PCT as I am able to get through the contact point much faster than the old Bab. The power level is, however, much lower than the PSTGT and it definitely isn't as "solid", but the control is probably higher with this new frame. I enjoy returning with this stick as well. Overall, great improvement from Babolat... way to address the biggest issue I had with the previous generation Storm.

I'd like to hear some other comparison's b/w PSTGT and PCT and if they align with my sentiments.

I currently use the Graphene Speed Pro, but am leaning heavily towards a switch back to #teambabolat

I agree with you findings regarding the PSTGT being the plusher frame, offering more power, and being the more solid frame and more stable against heavy hitters. The PCT requires more effort and maybe that's why I didn't like it as much as the PSTGT. Grab them Pure Storms before they discontinue them.

I did like how solid and plush the Pure Control felt compared to the Pure Storm though which is definitely odd.

As far as the Graphene Speed Pro, it's the best serving racquet of the three due to the polarization of the racquet. Maybe it's preference but I can feel where the racquet is at all times when you are going through your service motion. I use to hit with the PSTGT but switched main due to the serve. The PSTGT still hits the most solid and heavy ball of the three but I really struggled serving with it.

Due to the denser string pattern, the Speed Pro requires you to lower the tension but offers the most control of the three racquet. You can totally swing out on the ball and that dense 18x20 will usually allow the ball to stay in.

Cool that this stick is so fun to use but how does it compare against the Graphene Speed Pro?

The GSP is a bit stiffer at point of contact and you get a lot more easy pop with the GSP because of its higher SW. The PCT has a bit more whip in my opinion and its got a bit more control as well.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I actually like the PCT a lot more than the PSTGT. Yes it may require more effort because of its lower power level, but I'll take lower power and more effort for some whip and maneuverability any day. In terms of serving, I thought I was serving just as well with the Bab as I was with the GSP. I agree though that the PSTGT was a terrible serving stick, never was able to get any leverage on my serve.. and yes it will hit the most solid rally ball, but not the heaviest personally.

Thanks mrmo1115,

Generally I don't need high powered frames as I generate my own power, I need feel and stability more. I hit the hardest when I can feel the ball rather then using a powerful stick.

Still considering between a leaded up strike or a PCT...

mrmo1115,

Did you use the PSTGT in stock form?

When I demo'd the PSTGT and PSGT in spring of 2012 I too felt the PSTGT was a little sluggish. Later that year I bought the PSGT when it went on sale at TW and have modified it to essentially a faster, more maneuverable version of the Pure Storm Tour. My extra lead is concentrated in a double layer at 10/2, I replaced the stock grip with the ultra light Wilson Comfort Hybrid, and I covered the handle in lead tape from the butt cap to a point about 4" up the handle. Very whippy and spin friendly while being stable against hard serves.

I STILL haven't had time to test the new Pure Controls but maybe with all this talk of more a "crisp" or "modern" feel I've not been as eager to do so. Instead we've bought a few more PSGTs given their lower price and OOP status.

I did use the PSTGT in stock form and yes the sluggishness caught up with me and my tennis suffered as a result of it. Although the racquet has a crisp feel, it is still more of a classic feel than many of the stiffer frames out on the market.

I added a bit of lead (3 grams or so) at 12 o'clock and it made the frame play a little better and felt like it was smoother particularly on off center shots.

I received my Pure Control Tour yesterday and played 1,5 hours with it. I was expecting and hoping it to be like Pure Control Tour with bit sharper feel and especially with little little crispier upper hoop.

I was surprised how well PCT matched to my expectation! The feel is crispier than that of PST and it moves faster. I am coming from 350g racquets (6.1 95 16x18, POG Mid (3) and PST) and PCT weighted strung and with tourna overgrip 337g. So obviously I was bit early in reaction shots and serve returns but I decided to hold back from leading it for now. This is because I felt much easier to keep pace with ground strokes and find spin and pace for my serves.

I didn't even measure the swing weight and will not as I am sure that it is way below 320. I just want to try to adopt to the faster feel as it should benefit me more than it takes away.

Comfort felt ok. Not as soft as PST but no jarring shocks or weird vibrations either. Overall I am impressed. It doesn't have that clean feel of Heads, it doesn't have that muted/solid feel of typical Wilsons and still it feels like Babolat feel taken to good direction of Head/Wilson.

Lets see how our honeymoon goes from here but initial impression was much more than I expected. I have tried also Yonex Ai98 and no question, PCT suits me far better. I have history of Head Prestiges and recently above mentioned racquets.

what did you think of its control and precision?

recently I demoed the PC and then the PCT and really didn't see an improvement over the Storms. In fact, I ended up buying the new Pro Staff 95 instead since it seemed to provide as much easy access to spin but even more precision.

For me the control was not a problem at all. Rather opposite. I felt confident in swinging fully and being aggressive. I strung my racquet with Topspin Cyber Twirl at 24 kg. Initial DT 36.

Precision and control felt better than PST. If benchmark for me is Prestige MP I would say that PCT was not far at all.

Perhaps one thing that stood out was spin. I reckon it is due to the fast moving head. I felt I was getting lot RHS quite easily.

I'd like to chime in at this point and say that I recently took the Pure Control, Pure Control Tour, Pure Strike 16x19, and Pure Drive (new) out for a demo. The Pure Control Tour honestly felt the best out of all of them. Really solid feeling on contact and has nice balance regarding weight and swingweight. Funny, because I didn't like the standard pure control at all, nor the Pure Strike. The Pure Drive still tempts me as I have played every version of it since the swirly, and in my opinion the newest version plays closest to the team (which is and has been my go-to frame). Overall I'm just excited to hit with the PCT more, play around with some string setups, and see where it can go.

Tour vs. non Tour

Hi guys
I recently demoed the PCT and I am pretty stoked about it. It does everything well and I might switch to it from my current blades.

One question - are the tour version and the non-tour version a lot different? I like a leather grip so I am wondering if adding a leather grip to the non-tour version will make it play similar to the tour. If not, I might have to just get the tour version since the weight and balance are just perfect (I'll probably add a gram or two at 12 o clock, and an overgrip).

Thanks

Are you sure it comes with a leather grip? Mine came with the Syntec Feel (which I also love)

No sorry for the confusion. I would replace the original grip (skin feel) with a leather grip. If I add a leather grip to the PCT, it becomes too heavy for me, so I am wondering if I can buy the non-tour version, slap on a leather grip and make it play similar to the tour version.

I've hit with both very briefly but I thought they were similar. I actually liked the regular version better because of its lighter weight, you can customize it to your spec easier.

Really I thought if I tail weigh the non tour, it'll be very much like the tour. Wt at the hoop felt pretty similar. I bought a pair of non-tour from a poster here in very good condition and I am in process of trying out. I'll hit with them stock first before any modification. I may not need to modify at all since they felt pretty solid as it is

Others may disagree but that's my impression of the two.

Thanks jjs891! Good to hear that.
Looking at specs, it indeed seems like the tour version has higher handle weight with the rest of the weight distribution pretty similar. The beam is slightly thicker in the non-tour version as well going by TW specs. However, specs are misleading many times, so wanted to be sure.

Joonas, how is the slice back hand? I remember that with the PSGTT at least for me it was a bit hard to keep the ball low and really produce an effective slice. on the other hand with a MPMP it's super easy to slice.

I'm thinking of ordering Pure control tour. Can please someone compare it's pop level with Volkl organix 10 or Head youtek prestige Ig MP?
I love low powered rackets but not to much low powered like prestige. I'm playing now with O10.
I've tried Tour Strike and it has to much pop for me. I can't demo in my country.

After demoing several racquets I've decided to switch from my liquidmetal prestige mid to the PCT. I was looking for a more forgiving frame and the IG PMP didn't do it for me...sweet spot was smaller and got less pop that the mid I'm switching from.

I felt very connected to the ball with the PCT, maneuverable was amazing, it was surprisingly stable and had nice pop.

I did notice the dead upper hoop on some shots though. I've noticed a couple mentioned using led for this. Has anyone tried a 2 or 3 grams at 12 and what were the results? I'm thinking this might correct the problem but don't want to take away too much from the maneuverability.

How did this work out for you? This is my intention also. I demoed the Strikes and Controls yesterday and fell hard for the standard Control, but want just a little more weight and headlight. I am strongly considering switching from IGPMPs as my main sticks. Do you recommend going one grip size down if I'm used to Head sizing?

This is the one frame I really want to try. Have used a Pure Drive Roddick for about three years and, honestly, it's been great for the most part. But, I do think of changing to something softer with a flat beam. But, only if I really love it. The PCT really piqued my interest.

I have hit a lot of control racquets in the past. My favorites include the Prestige MP, C10 Pro, and Donnay Gold 99. I have to say my favorite and most confident inspiring racquet is Prince Tour 95. It is so precise and has a great sweet spot. I love playing with it.

Can anybody who uses new PCT clarify 2 things
- if it has trapdoor?
- if it has handle filled or hollow?

I have been playtesting the Pure Control Tour for two weeks and I am very much impressed!

My main frame was/is the Pure Storm Tour but I have been looking for a something lighter due to my fatigued
The Pure Control Tour m, I fould myself a little hesitant concerning the power/speed that I should input on the ball.

With the Pure Control Tour, you should definitely swing "fast and full" :) I do not want to say the power level of the Pure Control Tour is similar to the PSLtd, but it is definitely less powerful than the PST, so you should swing fast and fully and it will reward you with very precise and yet powerful shots.

Control, as the name indicated, is exceptional and it still has the classic players' frame feel that even the Graphene Prestige lines are loosing IMO. Due to the increased maneuverability, I think it is easier to serve and volley than the PST. Also, with the PCT, I feel less vibration when I hit outside the sweetspot.

If you like a control-oriented frame, which is a little light and yet has some power with full swing, the Pure Control Tour is worth demoing IMO.:)

Did you end up switching?

I demod both the PC and pct. the tour has good plough. The PC is too light. No drive to it. My biggest gripe with this line is lack of spin. It's more of a flat hitters dream. The strikes have more spin
