Put all the great players at their peak against each other

On proper surfaces - by that I mean no slowed down courts, no balls with reduced pressure etc. And ever player is at their peak.

On clay, Rafa wins. He was made for clay. Due respect to Borg but I don't think he beats Rafa.

On grass + fast HC (USO) - no one else would come close to Fed/Sampras. Nadal/Djok would get destroyed by Pete. And Pete would lose to Fed.

On slow HC (AO), the field is a bit larger, but again I don't think anyone has much of a chance vs Fed.

Eh, considering absolute best form at each tournament:

AO: Federer > Djokovic ~ Safin
IW: Federer
Miami: Djokovic
Monte Carlo: Nadal
Rome: Nadal
Hamburg/Madrid: Nadal ~ Federer
RG: Nadal
Wimbledon: Federer
Canada: Djokovic
Cincy: Federer
USO: Federer ~ Safin
Madrid/Shanghai: Federer ~ Djokovic
Paris: Djokovic
WTF: Federer

Biggest fail of Federer carieer is to bear Rafa at FO. Even Djokovic did it. Federer at his peak was trash against Rafa at clay, but Rafa did it much better on hard courts than Fed on clay. Sorry folks, sad but true.

Connor, McEnroe and Borg shouldn't be discounted so easily.

Peak Fed would beat 2015 Rafa at RG, not really a great comparison. Also what do you mean “even Djokovic”? Is Novak a mug now? Literally two people have accomplished that feat you can’t say “even Djokovic”.

I think a peak Safin would beat the peak level from anyone else. Shame he was such a playboy/enigmatic character to give tennis his full commitment. He was a player to cherish in the memories though, the GOAT in terms of peak level IMO.

I think AO is faster than USO

I agree with most of that, except I'd make a distinction between "fast grass" and "slow grass". On fast grass, I think Sampras win over Federer. But on Slow grass, peak Federer is the best.

On slow hardcourt, the order for me is Djokovic>Federer>Sampras>Agassi

Would? You don't want to hear what Rafa would do if he wasn't injured most of the time.
Peak Federer is beatable on any surface by peak Rafa. Peak Rafa is unbeatble on clay.

Good thread.

On clay I have to go with Rafa.

On grass + fast HC + slow HC I give the edge to Federer but think Osaka stands a good chance.

McEnroe you can talk about. Connor was a nobody in terms of tennis talent compared to the true greats, he's only famous because of his attitude and his rivalries and that SF run.
JMac would have no chance vs someone like Pete who was 10x deadlier and just as good at SV. Let alone Fed. I do think he'd give almost anyone else a decent run on grass.

Peak Federer is beatable on any surface by peak Rafa. Peak Rafa is unbeatble on clay.

Can with stop with the 'Rafa is injured' nonsense - he's had some 'injury' at every single big event he's lost, its a joke.

Peak Fed is beatable on any surface - you just showed your ignorance. I suppose you know better than every tennis player right?

Peak Rafa doesn't even make SF on any other surface in a field of greats - just look at his WTF results which he's never won.

First of all, you can't pick one single tournament when you talk about surface. How about Federer in Monte Carlo?
I said Federer was trash on clay trough whole his career. You can't compare Rafa on HC and Fed on clay. Don't be ignorant pls. How many times Federer beat Rafa on clay? He is ducking the clay since when?

In my above post there is one common denominator in 4 of the biggest 5 tournaments in the world, and that is the name Roger Federer. That's why he's the greatest folks. He either leads with titles at each tournament or he is a co-leader. That speaks volumes for his consistency and variety across all surfaces. In my opinion the one that comes next is Novak as much as I hate to say it. I think he will go down as the 2nd greatest of all time behind Roger.

Sampras is just as good at serving and volleying as McEnroe? Well, in that his serve was much, much better, I suppose that might be true. But his volleys - great though they were - were just not on a par with those of McEnroe.

You lost me on "Federer was trash on clay". 5 FO finals is trash. LOL.

Peak Fed on medium, medium fast and fast HC. Tie with Sampras on fast grass, Fed on slower grass.
Federer never played on the pre 2001 grass in his Prime. Yet you tie him with Sampras.
We don’t know if Fed would have been the best on the pre 2001-2003 faster HC in his Prime as well.
Federer is slightly worse than Djokovic on medium HC IMO.

Not every time that would be a excuse. But he has been unluckier than most of his peers with pain/injuries. People will always wonder how much more consistent he could have been. That’s a era he gets criticised for a lot.

Nadal has reached 2 F and 3 SF even at WTF. He did quite well when he was fit but of course not winning it is vital.
