BP for Karlovic

He's looking a lot better from the baseline than he did even last year

More importantly, he's more confident in his return game- he's looking to be aggressive.

And why not, when you've got a serve like his? For a guy used to going to so many tiebreaks, he needs to hit freely on the return game.

Fognini holds 2-1

Karlovic trying to be aggressive on the second serve return. Good, I say. For all the pressure he can put a server under, he never really uses it until the tiebreak. Good to see him put the effort to be a more complete match player.

C'mon Ivo! :)

The fact that this match, so far, is tight, despite Karlovic hardly hitting any first serves (1 ace by my count, too), is a testament to how much he's improved, since we last saw him, on his ground game and his net game.

Fognini is having almost no trouble receiving Karlovic's serve today, so Ivo's moving in and finishing off these points.

Excellent stuff from the big Croat. To be improving at age 30.

C'mon Ivo!

Backhand winner sets up Karlovic's second BP of the set.

Fognini UE sets up another BP. Ivo's so close. C'mon!

4-3 Fognini.. on serve

Dang it... misses out on a break chance as it's gamepoint for Foggy.
I like Karlovic but he actually has 67% 1st serves in...

Foggy's returning almost everything, was the point- so Karlovic has to move in or play from the baseline.

He's definitely holding his own.

The fact that he's got 3 BP's in this set before Fognini's even sniffed one also shows how good his attitude on the return game has been.

2 excellent aggressive points from Karlovic makes it 0-40 :) :) C'mon Ivo!

Yes 5-4, Karlovic up a break!

Finally! An ace, sets up set point for Ivo.

6-4, first set for Karlovic

Should be the favorite to win the second set, Fognini will probably fall apart and tank.

Amazing that Karlovic hit at 58 first serve %, only 2 aces, and still won a set without going to a tiebreaker (hitting 15 winners didn't hurt :))

Great stuff.

2 great returns and an amazing defensive pass gives Ivo 3 BP's immediately in the second set!!

Anyone else watching this?

My New Year's wish included many Roger/Rafa finals. We shall see if it is going to come true this week. :)

Davydenko, karlovic, and the Rochus brothers (Olivier is a lot better than Christophe, but even weaker mentally) I think will be a pretty big hurtle. However, I think for some reason Troicki will be the one to get the upset.

Ivo Karlovic wins 6-4, 6-4

Great display of baseline tennis and serve-and-volley tennis

Cheers to Dr. Ivo! Best of luck in the tourney!

Now, onto Gulbis-Montanes.

Uncanny resemblence between Gulbis and Safin...Reminds me of Safin 05 with the curls and stubble.

4-1 for Gulbis

Looking at his draw, he could potentially meet Federer- who he's never played before.

Exciting :) it was around this time last year that he beat Djoker, too

BP for 5-1 lead

Gulbis closes the first set!!!!
That was fast... :)

Also, impressive stats by his standards with 15 winners and 4 unforced errors.

6-2, 7-5 and Ernie starts 2010 with a win over a seeded player.

Excellent stats, too- not too many UE's and lots of winners and aces :)

Gulbis breaks to close the second set 7-5!!!
Wow, 74% of 1st serves in... that's deadly for a guy like him.

Well, nice job Gulbis... let that be the first of many victories this season!!! :)

I don't follow closely but believe it is unusual for Gulbis to win at all, let alone in two straight sets, often just the first and then fading to ultimately lose the match. Maybe there's hope for him.

Nadal's got Bolelli up first, Starace up second, probably Garcia-Lopez in the quarters, and probably Troicki or Stakhovsky in the semifinals.

None of these men have a victory over Nadal. The only men who have any victories over Nadal in his half are El Aynaoui in 2003 and Rochus in 2002

So, it's safe to say that Rafa's got a clear path to the finals- maybe dropping one set total (in the semi's, probably). This is, ofcourse, assuming that his forum in Abu Dhabi will be the same form he brings to Doha.

Federer doesn't really have anyone to worry about until the semifinals, where he could meet Davydenko or Karlovic.

Nice to see Younnes got a WC.

His match is on bet365 at 7:30 am v. Ryder deHaart....may be on the regular free stes as well/

If you've never seen him play, you will find he is a charasmatic player...and fun...

Bolleli did give Nadal a tough match in Rotterdam last year. Nadal won it 7-5 in the 3rd though.

And Starace pushed Nadal to 3 sets in the Olympics 2008. And they had a tight match in Hamburg as well last year.

Not saying Nadal's going to lose to either of those guys of course. Just a reminder that it may not be as easy a draw as it appears.

What time is Nadal playing? How many hours from now?

BTW, the official Doha website stinks!
