Question about Foot Pain

I have problems with Plantar Fasciitis. I think once you've had it, you become prone to getting it more easily. It flares up every now and then. I try to stretch my feet and calves as often as I can, and I do a variety of other things to prevent PF from coming back. However, I have a new pain in my left foot. The pain starts in the arch and goes up into the big toe, on the side of my foot. It does not ache while I'm walking, running, or playing tennis. It aches when I'm sitting down or when I wake up in the morning. I suspect this is just another flare up of PF, in a different location. Has anyone else ever had this problem? I thought PF usually made your heels and arch hurt.

probably still PF ...

you might have some bad shoes.
have you changed them from the initial bout? v. important.
what are you wearing?
have you applied the flexibility test to them (check the links in my signature)

are you wearing rigid orthotics? if not yet, you might have too.

the least you should wear is full length heel supports from Spenco ($30), but for rebel cases, you might have to splurge $300 for the rigid ones

read all the other threads here on this subject, also the Heel Pain section in my signature, which deals with PF

Thanks, Marius. You post a lot about health and fitness issues. Are you a Dr. or PT? I suspect you are correct about this being PF. I am wearing K Swiss Ascendors on hard courts, and K Swiss Ultrascendors on clay. I use Spenco Court insoles. I also wear elastic arch supports that I got from Footsmart. They seem to help some, but not with this new pain, which is only in the left foot. I am considering getting a pair New Balance WCT 1001, or WCT 820's. I have heard good things about them. I am not fond of other NW shoes, but I have heard the 1001 and 820's are much more flexible, therefore good for PF sufferers.

I am not in the field of health, except as an experienced patient:-)

Avoid NB 820, I had huge PF problems with 800. Nike Air Oscillates + Spenco saved me. I had also good experiences with Wilson 710 and 850CC.

Sorry to hear about K-Swiss, I was thinking about them.
Have you performed the flexibility test on them?

You might need rigid orthotics, for some they are the only solution.

Did you look at Heel Pain in my signature?

I cannot wear Nike shoes. They are too narrow. I seem to have problems with stiff shoes. My PF problems started with Wilson and NB shoes. I had some Filas that worked well, but they were disconinued. I get very frutsrated with the shoe manufacturers. You can't find a shoe you like and stick with it because they discontinue models all the time. I wore Reebok DMX Netmasters for a long time, but they wore out way too fast. The soles split after 3 wearings on the last pair of Reeboks that I bought. I ended up buying KSwiss Ascendors, and my feet were fine. Now those have been disconinued. They also don't perform well on clay. I have a pair of Adidas Clima Cool, which work well on clay but are not the best support wise. The K Swiss Ultrascendors are OK, but not as good as the Ascendors. I am thiniking of trying the new K Swiss Defier.

I have read many of your posts and others on PF. Thats how I found out about the arch supports from Footsmart. I have also tried some Sole Custom Footbeds. That worked pretty well, but not great. I think the problem is that durable shoes are too stiff, and flexible comfortable shoes don't last long. You end up spending a fortune either way. I think K Swiss are probably the best all around for the money. My husband swears by them. He likes the old Glaciators and the New Defiers. He really like the Ascendors too......but of course, they've been discontinued. Also, I don't think that shoe manufacturers pay too much attention to good arch support for women's shoes. They are more concerned about looks.
