Question about Tournament and League Play for a self-rated player

As I stated in the other thread I attempted to get a C rating last year in a 3.0 ladder but few were USTA members so it wasn't a sanctioned tournament.

Now I'm in a 3.5 and doing ok, but the play is more 3.0's with a couple 3.5's. We'll have a sanctioned 3.5 event in a couple weeks.

If I win a match or 2 I'll have some 3.5 points, will that preclude me from playing my 3.0 league that starts in May and/or other tournaments at a 3.0 level? I thought I read that once you play up in a tournament you can no longer play down.

Or will they look at who I've played and how they are mostly 3.0 rated players and allow me to continue with 3.0 league play.

Thanks for all the info on the boards to date.

As far as I know the USTA does not run a ladder, so I am not sure how you thought you were going to get a C rating playing on a local ladder. There is no such thing as "3.5 points". You will get a dynamic rating based on who you play and how you do against them. A lot of 3.0s play up in 3.5 tourneys. Some sections do not even count tournament play into the caculations for NTRP so it may not affect you at all depending where you are located.

Since you you don't have an official rating you can self rate yourself at 3.0 when you start league play. There is a possiblity of getting DQ'ed as a self rate if you win too easily, but that is true for all self rated players.

what happens is they take the top 8 from the ladder and have a sanctioned tournament at the end across all divisions for men/women ranging from 3.0 to 5.0. They have been doing it for a couple years and I've seen the results on tennislink

I had been worried since I believe I read on here that if you played say 3.5 in a tournament then you could no longer play below that as a self-rated

Well I can tell you that playing in 3.5 tournament does not preclude you from playing any other level including 3.0 if you do not have a official rating. Playing in a tournament will not give you a rating until the end of the year. As I said in another post I know somebody who played Opens, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 all in one year going back and forth between levels. He was tournament exclusive and got a rating at the end of the year. Leagues are different. You are required to self rate. You will be allowed to self rate 3.0 regardless of your prior tournament play at 3.5.
