Question for Djokovic fans...

This is a really tough loss but did you seem to get over it rather quickly? It's not even been but 5 days and I feel I'm already over it, and I think because it was to Medvedev. Like I'm genuinely happy for him because he's a good guy and deserves to win this Slam, especially after getting within two games of winning it in 2019. It doesn't hurt that Djokovic won the other 3. Anybody else feel the same?

Yeah, it wasn't that difficult to get over it, the only thing that really hurts is the fact he was only a win away from the CYGS, rather than him losing a slam final. And yes, losing to Medvedev is better than losing to Tsitsipas or Zverev in my opinion. Besides, losing a 5 setter is way more frustrating than a straight set beatdown, which makes the loss easier to digest because he never came close to winning the match. The worst possible outcome would have been losing to Nadal although that was a final we all dreamt of.

Actually what's really annoying about this is the fact my brother won't stop teasing me because he's glad Djokovic lost.

Same here, Mad Lad effect. Got a ticket for his hype train two years ago. A one sided final helped in that regard too, as we can't really highlight any particular moments and grumble if only Djokovic played better on this or that point... I think we'd feel a lot differently if it was a five set thriller. The way it turned out though, for me it's probably his least upsetting US Open final loss, and there are plenty to choose from. :X3:

Ofc part of reason for me is Medvedev, crazy Russian :D, but more to it is IMO Djokovic was really close to win second set and I still think that if he won 2nd, he would have won the whole thing. If he secures YE#1, I will completely forget about this loose, if he wins YEC, I would consider this year to be his best, on pair with 2011/15 ;)

It's a tough loss but not hard to get past because Djokovic still did what no man has remotely gotten close to in 52 years, get 1 match short of a Grand Slam. If a Grand Slam is the peak achievement in tennis, then getting 96% there (27/28 matches) is still damn great.

This year already exceeded my expectations plus he never had a chance in the USO final, so I got over it pretty quick

As a neutral fan, no way I would root for a player with 20 slams and not the other with 0 slam. That's like supporting the rich get richer and the poor is still poor. lol

Plus it's good for the sport when other players start winning for a change. Depth and strength should be spread out across the field, not having one dominant player while the rest are talent-less and wilt under pressure.

Legit jealous of Djokovic fans because it seems whenever he loses, it's a fairly straight forward affair. Those are so much easier to get over than 5 setters that can tease you.

Well, I am over it. But this loss made this season bittersweet for me. I guess I value the Grand Slam a lot and Djokovic messing up like that sucked.

Novak fan here, the match didn't bother me very much at all. In fact, I was pretty happy for Medvedev.

I didn't even care about the Slam record while watching the USO.

At the very least Djokovic fans have a player who is actively playing high-level tennis.

I'd take a crushing loss 10/10 times over the uncertainty Fedal fans must be facing about ever seeing their heroes fit again. For me it's about seeing your guy/team play and compete, the hope and drama and emotion that comes with it. That's why we watch sports, no? That's the core entertainment value of it all.

The losses I can take, never seeing them again is the hardest.

I already got over it tomorrow after game...

I only wonder what will Novak do now.

Wining IW ,Paris and atp finals would completely salvage this loss in my opinion...

Heck even wining 1 would be incredible to be honest.

He would either tie federer or become leader in masters 1000...Whatever the case i at least hope for one more title till the end of the season

Define "over it"

I don't know how I'd feel if he'd won it, but he's still won 3 Grand Slams this years especially along with truly special run at RG.

Got over it real quick. Probably the quickest GS loss ever with the reasons being.

He won 3 slams this year.
He performed better in slams this season than I could ever hoped.
He is still level in the slam race
A next gen player beat him which is good for the future.
Med deserves a slam for his record on HC outside of them and has made 3 finals

Two things :

1 - He won 3 slams and got to the final with 27 out of 28
2 - It wasn't even close so you can't say "if only this or that", he was simply outplayed ( not getting into why & how )

Conclusion is that he can go on and be very competitive for a few more seasons if he decides to continue that much ( which we all know he'll do because it's just who he is and it's his ultimate goal ) and all these things combined contribute to this loss being very easy to accept unlike for example 2014 loss to Nishikori, 2015 RG final and a complete year 2017 lost due to Pepe Imaz love & peace madness and not going to a surgeon for a fairly simple injury due to his "beliefs" ( struggling not to put a proper word here ) which led to 3 more slams for each of his ATG rivals. Ofc, Med being the one he lost to helps as well.

Oh no, my player only won 3 majors instead of 4 this year...how will I go on?

All joking aside, I was over it by the second set. Novak wasn’t playing that well from the beginning of the tournament but no one could even think to make him pay until possibly Zverev and Med. After the Zed match, I knew Med would be a bridge too far Especially since Med never even broke a sweat. I like Med way more than Zeverev so it was easier in that way also.

I would have liked the CYGS because it’s really cool but there’s a reason why so few players have done it. IT’S HARD.

I wasn't stressed out in the first place.

- Don't know why but I thought Nole would win it easily ;
- When match started I knew he was going to lose easily and was strangely calm ;
- Topic keeps bugging me though... it's not easy to let it go, not bcs of accomplishment which means nothing much to me after he done 4 in a row already, but suspecting he wanted to actually retire after this win or to announce retirement ;
- Ofc what would we do without rejuvenated Fedals who are now making scenarios for their favs after injuries are gone... I'm tired of them and of narrative Novak cannot shake off

I'm OK with it. He had a fantastic season and came so close.
Honestly, it was harder for me to get over the RG 2013 SF loss, he was so close to winning. In this one he didn't look like he would win, at any stage of the match. Maddy played great, too.
The only part that irks me is that Nole played sub-par, but I understand the tightness from the enormous pressure. Ah well...
Next year! ;)

I think if he played well and lost on the threshold of a Grand Slam, it would have been tougher for his fans. He looked tired, played far below the level of his previous two matches or the AO final and didn’t look very competitive. I thought he would get at least one bagel as Medvedev won almost all the long rallies - his serve helped him keep the sets close after early breaks and the outcome was never in doubt.

Did anyone see Djokovic break down at the end of his Serbian presser after the final when he was talking about a promise he'd made to himself to start spending more time with his wife and children? Based on his reaction there part of me thinks retirement may have been on the cards if he had managed to get over the line on Sunday. Or at the very least a drastically reduced schedule, which is saying something considering how little he's played outside of the slams this year. When a player starts contemplating retirement you really do wonder how much they have left in the tank mentally, although I still think Novak has more than enough from a physical standpoint to be contending for slams for the next couple of years at least. Based on Djokovic's interviews before and after the final I think there was too much going on psychologically beyond what was required to come through against Medvedev from a tactical and tennis related standpoint, and from that point of view it was semi-disappointing to see Novak struggle the way he did mentally considering he's usually very good at putting the blinkers on and blocking all of that external stuff out. Putting it into perspective though and remembering that Djokovic was an underdog in the slam race (in my opinion anyway) at the start of the year the guy has lots to be proud of and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what a (hopefully) fresh and rejuvenated Djokovic can do in Australia in January.

Apart from a few memes, I didn’t feel too inclined to troll. I genuinely felt bad for him during the changeover in the third.

If that match was really the end of the Big 3 era (I don’t believe it will be), it was a pretty amazing end.

It would be in line with his weird interview after the SF against Zverev. He said he would play the final as if it would be the last match of his career, which may sound like an anecdotal figure of speech in itself, but the way he said it (voice, articulation, face) made it seem fishy. It really looked like he was trying to send a hidden message.

The fact here is an actual thread dedicated to whether people are over it or not suggests perhaps not yet as otherwise people wouldnt still be discussing it.

Another thing which I found pretty interesting is that Djokovic was pictured with a fan in Serbia barely two days after the final on Sunday reportedly making his way back from a practice session holding his tennis racquet. Considering the emotional stress which he himself admitted had been burdening him since Wimbledon and the physical toll that the last year has undoubtedly taken you'd think he'd want to take at least a couple of weeks off before even thinking about picking up a racquet again. If its true that he was contemplating retirement in the lead up to the final on Sunday though then maybe he doesn't want to take any kind of extended break away from the sport knowing (perhaps subconsciously) that a lengthy period of reflection might amplify those thoughts when there's still work to be done to accomplish his goals and secure his legacy as the most successful player of all time and the slam leader. Its quite possible (probable in fact) that I'm reading into all of this way too much but his actions and words over the last week or so leading into the final and in its aftermath have really made me think about where the guy is at mentally.

Maybe Federer is not the only one who likes playing tennis. His fans make it seem like he plays only for the love of the game while Nadal and Djokovic play only to break his records.

I'm not doubting his love for the game in the slightest, but still found it a bit unusual considering the toll this year has to have taken on him at his age.

it was a straight set loss and it made it digestible.

I as a fan would have preferred CYGS and I'm not going to lie about it. But that French open win was unexpected and that was a bigger achievement for Novak this year. I never saw that coming in the first place. If he didn't do that he would still be in 19 with this USopen loss. I'm glad he got to #20 in Wimbledon.

You can't have it all, it's ok. Djokovic clearly felt the weight in his mind and his legs as he played the final. You can clearly see it.
