Question for Djokovic fans...

Yeah, it wasn't that difficult to get over it, the only thing that really hurts is the fact he was only a win away from the CYGS, rather than him losing a slam final. And yes, losing to Medvedev is better than losing to Tsitsipas or Zverev in my opinion. Besides, losing a 5 setter is way more frustrating than a straight set beatdown, which makes the loss easier to digest because he never came close to winning the match. The worst possible outcome would have been losing to Nadal although that was a final we all dreamt of.

Actually what's really annoying about this is the fact my brother won't stop teasing me because he's glad Djokovic lost.
Well, you can always remind him which Grand Slam is coming up next....

He is still behind Fedal. He badly needed to win that match.
Ok so you are basing that on who you prefer obviously or what ?
Fair enough with Fed but all the main records Djokovic either leads Nadal or matches him.
20 slams each
Same Masters
WTF 5-0
#1 YE 6(could be 7) to 5
Weeks at #1 is huge difference
Won all slams twice
All masters twice.

Nadal has
Olympics Gold 1-0
H2H is slams 10-7

I’m all for Nadal being a higher level on Clay but all round he can’t be ahead of Djokovic

This is a really tough loss but did you seem to get over it rather quickly? It's not even been but 5 days and I feel I'm already over it, and I think because it was to Medvedev. Like I'm genuinely happy for him because he's a good guy and deserves to win this Slam, especially after getting within two games of winning it in 2019. It doesn't hurt that Djokovic won the other 3. Anybody else feel the same?
I was over it in a couple of hours. Probably the fastest I've ever gotten over a Djokovic Slam final loss

Right after the RG 2020 final, which fan wouldn't take Novak's 2021 season?
Actually at any point in the open era, which player would not take Novak's 2021 season?

I'm still shocked he lost to Medvedev of all people. Zverev I can understand, but Medvedev?? The guy he destroyed in Australia. Djokovic just didn't look himself. He looked flat and tired. End of season and Zverev match + other matches took too much out of him. If he's fresh, he beats Medvedev there every time.

Wasn't hard because Novak is clearly the GOAT. Way beyond Fed and Nadal.
If someone said last year after F.O 2020, that Novak in 2021 would have 3 SLAMs and 1 final - I would have thought they were INSANE.
Novak's had a legendary year. Better than anything Fed or Nadal have ever done.

Ultimately the trek to Tokyo and Olympics cost Novak the CYGS. But he's going to come in 2022 with a vengeance. I won't be surprised by ANOTHER 3 slam year in 2022.

Nobody goes into that much detail. The Greatest debates in any sport are generally boiled down to a few things. In tennis the most prestigious events are Slams and Olympics. Nadal and Federer have done better than Djokovic across those 5 events.
i genuinely dont think the casual fan would have a clue what a DCS is or a golden masters. Those just do not mean anything.
Federer also has over 100 titles. While i disagree i am in no doubt if all hree retired as they are now Federer would be considered the Greatest. Hitting 20 first is actually a big advantage.

Weeks at #1 and YE1 is mentioned way more than overall titles.

Actuslly the last 3 times the ATP on social media mentioned titles it was big titles which Djokovic leads.
You think anyone cares about Fed’s 49 250/500 titles ?

Yeah you don’t because it only became important post late 90’s like the slam record did.
The most weeks at #1 will always get mentioned and does any slam or big event I watch.
You mention Connors but who mentions his 109 titles ? Not many as the big 3 with 20 slams is way more important.

Im not hating on Fed he has so many due too grass and Basel also it’s good that he was winning the ones he entered but 250/500 for top players nevermind ATG mean nothing

You think he is. He is not but Fedal fans will never be convinced.
Well he is now as even the most cursory read of sports comment pages on non tennis forums seems to suggest Nadal and Federer are the two GOATs. On Atp website its almost unanimous. Unless there is an actual defined metric for GOAT then publi oponion will determine who is grestest and that will be Nadal or Federer. Djokovic wouls have ended the debate had he won. He should have won. Why he didnt i think is more involed than many think.

If something only became relevant post 1999 then it is by definition irrelevant in a GoAT debate. The All time part is the relevant point.
Slams always mattered. Olympics mattered since 1988. Graf is considred.goat due to 1988.

It does not help him he hit 20 when Fedal were injured and post 35.
Sunday was devastating. I like Djokovic although i am very sceptical about why he lost as he did and his behaviour. The crying then laughing as the match was going on is embarrassing and unexplainable.

Nope he is currently clearly above them both when taking everything into consideration. They both need another slam to even be considered equal to him.
In Serbia perhaps. Everywhere else he will go down as third of thid era. He badly needed to win slam race. He may still do that but i think its unlikely.
There is no way here will.be a unanimous GOat when hree players have 20 majors. THe debate will always rage. there should be no debate. That is the issue. It is just hard to understand why he capitulated like he did with such a glorious chance to end the debates.

I cant say on a public forum and i have no proof of anything at all. Do you ever get a gut feeling about something?
me and my friends were sure we would witness history. We laughed about if Medvdev won in straight sets how strange that would be but then we live i strange times.
I dont think its appropriate to post a gut feeling publicly. Like i say i have no evidence at all. Just a gut feeling.

Yea I was over this loss after a couple of days and realized today I was no longer even thinking about it. Usually, Slam final losses take longer to get over but not this one for some reason. RG 2015 was one of those Slam final losses that it took a long time to get over. On another note, I see you know who is back. :D

Unless there is a criteria as to what makes a goat then perception is everything. Ultimately any sportsperson would take Nadal and Federer careers over Djokovic. That loss on sunday was a really damaging one. Next season i have no idea what will happen but of the three Atgs durikg the off season i think Djokovic the one with the baggage wheteas Nadal and Federer will be delighted the goat race goes on. Its still one of the greatest seasons in history, so there is more to celebrate than be upset about. What Djokovic achieved was monumental, grand slam or not, so I can see why Djokovic fans would be ecstatic about this year.

With that said, winning a Grand Slam marks you irrefutably as an immortal of the game in a way that no other feat can. Someone as driven as Djokovic will no doubt be thinking a lot about some of the decisions he made this year (The Olympics being the most obvious example) and how they affected him.

Nadal is leading the goat race according to the players. The players put the Olympics on par with the majors. Therefore according to he players Nadal is currently Goat. First thing the press do when Murray and wawrinka are compared is cite murray being a double olympic champion. Steffi graf and her gold medal ofte brought up. Same with Serena. I am only going off previous criterias.
Anyway it is all abit academic as the slam race goes on. The fact the debate goes on is a miracle. Debates should have been over last Sunday.

Djoker not winning 4th slam, keeps the competition relevant too. One man taking it all doesn't suit well for any sport.

Also don't think anyone better than Medvedev to take up the slam. Has been right up there for sometime.

Little pain of not seeing #21 now and CYGS is there, but #21 and beyond will happen over the years. As a fan, 3 slams in a year + 1 slam final is as good as it gets. Can't really complain.

But chronology can't determine leadership. If they're equal you have to look at other metrics. I think Djokovic is marginally ahead of Federer, but it does come down to the weighting of metrics.

This one was very easy to get over, three things were instumental in that for me.

The first was the fact that Djokovic had won three slams already in the season after the disappointments of last year, he was three slams behind in the race with Fedal and it looked an almost certainity that he would still be behind after this season with Nadal more than likely owning the slam record. Novak not only stopped Nadal personally himself, but he then went onto join Fedal at the top with 20 slams....so basically all these years of chasing, and he finally caught them. When you consider, heading into Wimbledon 2018, Federer had 20, Nadal had 17 and was basically a point away from making it 18, and Djokovic was on 12....couldn't really ask for more. It's now 20-20-20. In doing this Djokovic also picked up the surface slam, the double career slam, the channel slam, and lets not forget he also managed to get the other big record that he was chasing for so long....most weeks at world number one and is on course hopefully for that 7th year ending number one also. This all at the age of 34, can't feel so down.

Second reason, he didn't lose a very tight match, Djokovic was behind in the score from the very first game, these types of losses are a lot easier to get over, when you say the other player was just better on the day, than having Djokovic come close and then blow it on a key point in the match. I mean RG 2013 was more harder to get over than this, and he was only on 6 slams back then. It was swift, for me much easier to move on from. Having said that, Djokovic took out the most in form players at every slam, Medvedev in AO, Tsitsipas in RG, Berrettini in W and Zverev at USO....getting that win back over Zverev after the Olympics was important.

Third reason, Medvedev is just a such a cool guy that a second after knowing and getting over the fact that Djokovic isn't winning the CYGS, I couldn't help but feel happy for Medvedev who truly deserved his first slam. It's great to see the Next Gen finally become the Now Gen and start to take that step forwards. This year was a great story about Novak v Next Gen, and we will likely see more Next Gen slam wins now in 2022.

Sure Novak must be disappointed, but also watching how he got that incredible love from the crowd was so special, he finally got what he really wanted, the love of the fans. It was so overwhelming for him, he broke down and cried. Finally, USO was such a great slam to watch, so many fun matches, as a tennis fan I really cannot complain, and also should be so greedy, Novak did plenty good this year.

Someone holds all four slams together is Epic .

Djokovic already won 4 slams in a row in 2015-16 and it is his most historic achievement .
I never felt he need to win 4 slams in a row again , he has already done that !

USO 21 was just another slam for me .

Also he never had the chance to win it & Medvedev was definately the better player .Mentally physically and gamewise , Medvedev was so much better in this match . So he totally deserves it !

This is the least toughest loss for me as a fan !
2021 was a historic season for Djokovic ❤

Ofc part of reason for me is Medvedev, crazy Russian :D, but more to it is IMO Djokovic was really close to win second set and I still think that if he won 2nd, he would have won the whole thing. If he secures YE#1, I will completely forget about this loose, if he wins YEC, I would consider this year to be his best, on pair with 2011/15 ;)

Please see how broken Djokovic looked in the mini bus after Zverev beat him. Please also refer to Zverev callig the Olympic gold his biggest ever title. murray and nadal have said same thing. One possible outcome is also that Djokovic was really burdened by the pressure of cygs history. Now freed from it, could revert to domination. Next slam match against Medvedev will tell a lot, if Medvedev maintains his level of play.

It was seeing the crowd's shameless support that made the loss easier for me to swallow. If he simply lost on the first match point, it would be harder. Seing how Novak played last three games, I have no doubts that he can continue beating most of the guys in grand slams next year. He just needs to work more on his serve, that is his weakest link.

Also, I'm glad it was Danil and not some other player.
I would be perfectly happy if for the next 5 years Novak wins against Danil in AO and then Danil wins against Novak in USO every time. Just because Novak also won RG and WIM this year, that makes it a huge bummer?

Seeing the presser calmed me also. Once Novak secures this YE#1, he will willingly let the No1 spot to NextGen and spend more time with family. He'll focus on slams and not the ranking points.

I am the same age as Novak and I don't buy this "getting older" and "last chance" narrative.

I wish him to win his next match.

I am also personaly relieved the run is over and I got a closure and can spend less time lurking on TTW.
