Question for ex-315 LTD users

So I jumped onto the Tfight 315 LTD bandwagon a little late, and I've gone through the other mega thread, but as with most of the mega threads, you see a lot more hype and positive reviews.

So I'm mainly interested in two things:

1.) Are you still using your 315 LTD, if not what did you switch to?
2.) Why did you switch?

Thanks!

1) No. Went back to my K6.1s.
2) Nice feeling racket but the weighting is all wrong. The SW is too low and yet the racket is too heavy in stock form to allow much flexibility in customization. By the time I brought it up to my preferred SW, weight distribution and balance specs, it was around 360-365g and that sort of weight is unrealistic to use. Felt like a heavy 360g+ as well.

No need to ask an "ex-315 LTD user" if he's still using his 315 LTD, is there?
- For what it's worth, I'm still using my 315 LTD (16x19) and think it's the best racket I've ever tried (so far). I like switching rackets myself and will do so again in the future, but I will not discard this one and always come back to it when I feel like it. I don't play professionally, so fun is the most important variable for me, and I get fun from playing around with the many rackets I have.
About the racket itself, I can only say I get great control, power, maneuverability, comfort, and ease of use. 2 grams of lead each at 2 and 10, an overgrip and an O-dampener for me.

There is probably a relevant variable here that would be interesting to hear from people about: what were the starting specs, and what did you need to do to get the specs to your desired playing characteristics. With TW reporting a stock SW of 301, it's potentially problematic to get to a SW of 330+ without adding a lot of lead, and that may lead to issues. For me, I have just ordered one through TWE's matching service that begins with a stock SW of 312, so much easier for me to mod to my desired end by adding 5 g's at 11-1. Of course it remains to be seen (when i get mine) whether i can achieve that and still have the balance etc i like. I will report in due course.

PS: Even if very good, i'm still likely to experiment with other sticks. It's part of the fun.

Ive been using it for a few months, but tortional stability wasnt anything great. Switched to the Pro Staff 97 RFA, which weighs just a bit more than my custom Ltd but it is a lot more stable and powerful.

I'm not an ex-315LTD user, as I just bought one to test out. I can tell you why I won't make this my main stick though.

As Racket King said, it needs too much weight to get decent SW. It's too depolarized. For depolarized frames, I think the Wislon 6.1classic is still one of the best frame ever.

Even though it is a sweet feeling frame, it doesn't have as much feel nor is it as rewarding to hit as the Angell that I'm using as my main frame at the moment.

So for me, even though it has some great feel and precision, it doesn't have enough of anything to force me to switch from my current frames to this one. YMMV.

Have you ever thought of matching the 315 Ltd and RF97A just to see how they compare?

I have both an Angell and a 315 ltd and they both feel incredible honestly. I still use my 315 because it is a great frame, but it does need weight on the tip (stock SW on the 16 main is more like 310). If you are cool with a frame that weighs around 345, SW of 330 and balance of 5 pts hl, you will be good.

I like the Angell since it is a bit easier to use, but the 315 stays in my bag and I have pulled it out in matches rather often. Sometimes you just need that feel.

Some of the cons I read about the 315 Ltd is the high weight and low swing weight. I play with the 320 which is similar except it has a synthetic grip. I took the synthetic grip off and put on two overwraps to replace the grip + overwrap. The weight went down from 341 to 331 g. Balance went up from 31.4 to 32.1 cm. And the swing weight went up from 324 to 328 Kgcm^2. The stock 1/2' grip size went from a large 4 5/8" to a 4 1/2". Recoil weight went from 167.8 to 166.3 Kgcm^2.

I plan to replace the leather grip with a synthetic (which i prefer anyway). That should help keep the static weight within reasonable parameters, even allowing for weight in the hoop.

This exactly. I picked up a couple from TWE when they were on sale. Ditched the leather grip, swapped the buttcap for a Head one with a trapdoor, put on a synthetic grip and tail-weighted it back up to 315g. After a gut/poly string job, overgrip and ~6g of lead at the tip and I've got it to 340g / 32.1cm / 330SW which still gives me ample room to tinker if I decide I need to bump up the SW a bit. Haven't had a chance to hit with it yet, but it sure swings nice in the living room!

I was at an open tourny and was watching James Blake's brother play doubles. He had lead tape on the inside of his racket pretty much all the way around the hoop. I always wondered how the 315 would play leaded up like that, because I hate too much lead concentrated at noon (and the 315 does need the SW bumped up).

I figure that would help with the stability and spread out the lead a bit. I kept hoping the rackets would get below $100 but they never did =/. If someone is able to do this and let me know how it is I may grab a couple.

I tried that and it pretty much sucked. If you aren't cool with 345-350 grams the 315 will not be your cup of tea. This frame is pretty low powered so you want all the weight you can handle.

1. I'm no longer using
2. I'm in Aus and they are hard to find...never ordered any extra head guards. Had 5 grm of lead at 3 &9. Never really got comfortable with the grip shape and didn't want to go through the hoopla of trying to get 82s plaletes to accomodate. But felt like one of the best frames I've used. Using 97s now.

How does it compare?

Changing the grip should increase the balance point a little but have a marginal effect on the swingweight. I will still be adding 5-6g's at the tip to get the SW to 330. For me it's swingweight that has the most noticeable effect on the power/plow, not whether the grip is leather or synthetic. Of course it could be that the balance then becomes an issue (and maybe this was what you were getting at), but over the last few months i've got used to playing sticks with a higher balance point so in principle this shouldn't be a problem. But i shall see shortly!
