RG 13 has to be the worst, such an epic fail. AO 14 (loses ownership of pet Slam) and other painful RG losses (11, 14, 15) have to be there too. Not sure about the Olympics. In retrospect the 2008 loss is the worst, but surely Djokovic fans rightfully expected him to have several more good tries at the time. 2016 may sting more as the one that most likely killed his chances (Djokovic will be 33 at the 2020 Olympics).

How is the 2015 FO final a heartbreaking loss? Wawrinka totally outplayed him after the 1st set.

The only truly heartbreaking losses from this list 2013 FO and 2008 Olympics and maybe 2014 AO. He didn't come close to winning all the other matches.

If you wanna see what a heartbreaking loss is look at Nadal's 2012 AO or Fed's 2011 US.

I'm no Djoker fan....but my guess would be RG F 2015 or RG SF 2011.

The famous net touch at the French in 2013 probably. Looking at his career now though all those losses are easier to "take".

FO 2015 final for me

That one bummed me out for a while.

FO 2014 final was pretty bad too

Madrid 2009 definitively should be higher. It really breaks him down. Also, Cincy 2012 deserve a spot. Being bagelled in his prime, WOW. Olympics 2008 is top 3.

Imagine if Fed lost the 09 final to Soderling in the exact same fashion. Bet you would have found it heartbreaking

Isn't that obvious? After Djovack straight-setted Nada(l), they thought he was playing BOAT tennis and would steamroll his way to the title, then comes this annoying Wawrinka pest and blows Djock off the court, and one is left wondering: will Novak ever win this?!

Of course in hindsight it's not that bad since Djok did win RG in the end, but at the time it was obviously quite devastating.

On a serious note that FO 2015 loss must have been crushing, it really looked like Novak had some sort of mental block at Roland Garros. The applause from the crowd, the sportsmanship from Stan and the tears from Djokovic. If not the most heartbreaking it must be the most emotional.

Not sure if serious or trolling...

It doesn't just depend on whether it's a deciding set loss or not. It also depends on what is on the line, pre-match expectations and momentum swings during the match.

After Rafa & before Stanimal , Clayray was born !

Very difficult to pick between FO 2013 & FO15..
Has to be FO 13 because he was in the winning position until the net incident..And it destroyed his mentality for the rest of the season too, causing loss at Wimby 13 & USO 13 final loss..
Also At FO 15, Novak had 4 break point chances in 4th set , he was 1 serve game away from taking it to 5th set..
both were tough loses..

In hindsight they maybe should be happy it happened. I know it sounds weird but this way he would lose his fire 12 months later. The second part of 2016, could have been the 2nd part of 2015. In that case Rog would probably have won 3 straight slams:eek:

I voted for the loss to Del Potro at 2016 Olympics. Unlike the others on the list, this is one heartbreaker he may never be able to come back from and you could tell from his reaction after that loss that he was probably thinking the same.

I wonder if maybe the loss to Querrey at 2016 Wimbledon should have been included? Let's face it, he's never been the same player since!

So you wouldn't feel heartbroken at all if you saw what was probably his best and last chance of winning the FO slip away?
A lot more for Fed in 2009 because Nadal was only 23 years old back then. In 2015 everyone knew Djokovic had Nadal figured out + Nadal was getting old.

It's not like 2009 was Federer's best last chance, it was HIS ONLY chance, that's why the pressure was huge. Djokovic had 3-4 more chances to win, you'll see he'll go deep again this year and maybe even win. Fed was never going to win the FO if he blew it in 2009 and everyone knew it.

Well if you expected that Djokovic was just going to stroll through Wawrinka then you're funny. Just because it's a FO final loss doesn't mean it's heartbreaking. As I said - Wawrinka outplayed him in the same fashion Federer lost the 2006/2007 FO finals. Were those heartbreaking to Federer fans you think? Not a chance. 2006 Rome was 1000x more devastating than the 2006/2007 FO finals.

I don't get the sense that if your favorite player got outplayed that loss is somehow gonna be heartbreaking. He was so far from beating Wawrinka it's ridiculous. And to compare 2015 FO to 2011 US Open when Fed was serving for the match, had multiple match points only to lose to some fluke shots that got in is a joke. Djokovic was never in a winning position at any point of the match but if Djokovic fans expected Djokovic to just own Wawrinka then it's their problem they couldn't handle that loss.

A heartbreaking loss = losing a huge match when you're in a winning position. How was Djokovic ever in a winning position?

Once again, it's not just about how tight the loss was. He was expected to win the final as he was in great form at that tournament and in general. He could have easily won the fourth and with that gain momentum in the fifth but messed it up and, a great chance for the Career Slam was gone. Way worse than Fed's FO final losses to the King of Clay. As for Federer's matches, RG >>> Rome so it's not fair to compare.

With Nadal out of the picture he was always going to have more chances as evidenced by winning in 2016 with a good chance to win there again, what the hell are we even talking about here?

Ask anyone what they think was a more heartbreaking loss and then be shocked when looking at the results.

Even in the 2016 final you could see he had a mental block. When he served for the championship the first time round, he choked it away. When he served it out for the second time he choked and gave Murray BP's but eventually got the job done

Please, you were one of the main guys saying that he will never win the French because he will massively decline at the beginning of 2016 already (you know, 28-29 years old, playing just as demanding style as Nadal... :D).

You are wrong! As a fan of Roger Federer from 2004 onwards, Rome 2006 loss is more painful than any of his losses in RG. Rome 2006, he had double match points. It was a superb match. It was a devastating loss for Roger Federer. It's up there with the most painful losses of Roger.

Even the commentator say at the end of the match, that it was a devastating loss for Roger.

Not a Djokovic fan but i wanna vote and say its the 2015 loss to Wawrinka at the french open. He had already beaten Nadal and Murray and the title looked like being his and then to get beaten in the way he did after so many years of being stopped by Nadal and the way he looked after that final. I really felt for him in that moment and wondered if he would ever win it. Thankfully he did in 2016 but for sheer expectation and heartbreak at the time, it has to be that loss.

Yep just yet another lucky Nadal win.

That lucky BH pass at 3-1 in the 5th set tie breaker sums it up.
