R.I.P. my beautiful dog

Hi, everyone. I just wanted to share some memories of my dog Simba who passed away yesterday aged 10.
She was a lurcher, a lot of you may not have heard of the breed because they're mainly found in the UK and Ireland. But she was the most placid, gentle animal who slept about 23 hours a day and was happiest curled up on the sofa.
We adopted her from a rescue shelter in 2004 and she has given me and my family the most wonderful memories. She was put to sleep after having a stroke but did not seem to suffer which is some comfort. But I'll miss her so much

I am sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. I've been through this several times myself and if never gets any easier. Maybe one day you can rescue another great animal from a shelter. There is nothing more gratifying than giving an unwanted pet a new home.

Very sorry to hear that, I know exactly how you feel as my dog (fox terrier) passed away recently ( a month ago) as well, he was a month away from his 15th birthday.

For me it was literally like losing a younger brother, a family member (I absolutely despise it when people say "well he was just a dog" ), I had him since childhood and I really feel like it will never be the same without him.

Not at all, other people's experiences are totally welcome too. And sorry to hear of your loss too.
Yes, dogs definitely do become part of the family, we share our homes and lives with them and go through a lot together. It's a shame that some people don't understand that.

Losing a dog can be tough. Amazing how one becomes so attached to an animal. I had two dogs and was very upset when they died.

With regard to dogs, I decided long ago, that much like boats, it is better to have a friend that has one than to have one myself.

Is that breed similar to a Whippet? Looks kind of like a Whippet to me.

True love never spoke as well as through a dog's kiss and smile. A uc berkeley professor poisoned our cat, trees, and got away with it due to his influence, as his daughter worked with the county da, and a son was a cop, and the cops were only worried about him, not the law.

Sorry for the loss, it's not easy when a loved pet passes. A mother-in-law, well that's another story

Just a little humor to help cheer you up. There is a bright side, but you rarely see it at this moment. Later, when you look back at how happy you made your pet and all the unconditional love you got in return, it masks the pain and you start to see and appreciate how life is just a great opportunity to share life.

Sorry for your loss. My dog passed half a year ago and she was 14, easily one of the worst days of my entire life. Just know your dear friend is in a better place and is not in pain anymore.

No apology needed - I'm not saying he was my favorite, either. But, the timing of my dog and his reading of that, whether it is good or bad, heartfelt poem always struck a cord in me.

My sister just put her chow to sleep - planned the day/had a vet come to her place.

I'm facing the same with our/my daughter's yellow lab. It's funny. you look at old and tired eyes and it makes me sad and happy at the same time. I find myself petting her more often and longer and thinking about what she's given my daughter and our family.

And yes, it's very hard, a dog of course becomes just as important a family member as everyone else. Because her death was unexpected, I was very shocked at first but now it's sunk in, it's just very very sad.

Only 10 years old ? Is that little too young to die ? are you cremating or burying your dog ? my dog died at 9 and 1/2 years of age. It was unexpected and it really saddened my family. We still have the ashes. We owned many dogs over the years but one that died relatively young was very special to us.

Fedace, I think that's an inappropriate question to ask in this thread. Some breeds have different lifespans, and some dogs, much like humans have sicknesses, cancers, etc., that cause the dog not to live as long as the average lifespan.

Well, her breed would be expected to live a couple of years longer but as I said, she had a stroke which can happen at any age I guess. But like I said, she didn't suffer. I'd rather she died painlessly at age 10 than die in agony at age 12.

She's going to be cremated and we're going to scatter her ashes on the country road where she went for her walks.

And what a life she must have led with such a loving person to care for her.
Animals are as much a member of a family as any human, some more so at times.
We had three cats, two adopted from an animal shelter, the other adopted us but insisted on staying outside - she refused to mix with the other two (who are brother and sister).
A week ago today we were driving out of our driveway when we realised we'd run her over.
We rushed her to the vet but soon after he commenced the operation he told us her injuries were too serious.
The tears that we've shed and continue to shed.
We buried her in a place next to the house where she loved to lie in the sun.
We'll never forget her and will always honour her memory.
We hope and pray she'll be there with us in the next life.
She used to meet the car whenever one of us came home and loved to talk.
Initially I wasn't so keen on her as she kept hissing at our other "kids" when she encountered them.
But I came to love her deeply - as I say, "she was an acquired taste and I acquired quite a taste for her."

I used to have a french bulldog. The life expectancy of this breed is rather short, around 10 years. However, we all were lucky and he have managed to live 12 years. At the end, we had to put him to sleep since it was, probably, the most human thing to do for him at the end of his days.

That was some 6 years ago and I am, still, somehow recovering from all of that.

I just saw this post and seeing that it was posted on April 1 I was hoping it was just an April fools joke (as terrible as it sounds). I guess I was just hoping against all hope that Simba didn't really leave you.

I totally can relate. We also had a rescue dog. He was already around 12 when we got him and was blind with cataract in one eye. As he aged the other eye got cataract as well and he also lost his hearing. He then had a stroke which nearly took him away from us. It took a long time but he eventually recovered. My wife painstakingly took care of him as if she was caring for a person. He gave us a couple more wonderful years. Towards the end he started to have frequent seizures. He passed away peacefully in his sleep. We had him cremated and kept his ashes. He will forever stay with our family.

We called the vet who normally takes care of them both, Simba and his sister. She makes house calls which is a good product of Russian societal interaction. However, she suggested x-ray and blood work. We were setting this up when we noticed last night he seemed back to normal with no blood detectable (I looked thoroughly). Back to happy cat that puts everything in his mouth...

You can't know when it will be and you can't stop it. Maybe you have a couple of years left, or maybe she still has half her live left. Just appreciate whatever it is

It depends on the individual dog too. Our family had a dog with life expectancy of about 10-12 years and she lived til she was almost 15 years old. Good genes from parents play a big role
