YES! Go Del Po! I knew he would pull through for us fans someday! I hope he starts beating more top 10 players, because thats the only thing thats holding him back right now

I'm so happy right now, I hope he goes far in this tourney!!

glad to see you again, bbob! :D

but i cant agree w/you that anything is holding him back. he was at #54 last july. from there he has gone steadily up. how long has he been in the top 10? one-half of one year? give the guy a chance to enjoy each success; youre only young once!.

he's dancing as fast as he can, and he's doing really, really well at it. he's only 20 years old, and i'm sure he's setting records .......... give him one year ........ let's see how he does at wimby when he comes full circle ... IMO the end of wimby will equal the end of one year in the life of JM del Potro :)

what in the world happened to Nadal. I left when he was up 3-0 in the 3rd and in total control, and now check and see he lost.

Sounds like a ginormous choke.

I guess its not so bad to lose in breaker as those can be a bit of a lottery. But still a shocker after being up 2 breaks!

I just read some of the post match comments from Nadal and this one sums it up:

"I played really bad all the time," Nadal said. "When I have it 3-love in the third, I played worse. It was amazing disaster."

and

"I didn't play well during this tournament," Nadal said. "I didn't adapt well. I played really bad."

I like the expression "it was amazing disaster", very funny and very true.

It was fatigue IMO. Simple fatigue. Others want to disagree and bash Nadal but I dont doubt the AO and Indian Wells hasnt burned Nadal out a bit. I think there was a reason he wasnt playing great tennis all week. Hes obviously burned out a bit.

If you mean being physically too tired, I don't think so. I didn't see any signs of it, in fact Del Potro is the one I thought showed signs of it. If you mean mental fatigue you may have a point. There is such a thing as mental exhaustion. And playing very close matches where you are often at the brink of losing does take a toll. Still, Del Potro kept his cool when it mattered most. Give him credit.

Yeh, sometimes you just have to laugh about it. As long as he saves all of those amazing disasters for non slams. :)

I just caught some of the end points on the news and Rafa was putting nothing on the ball. Mabe the hard courts affect his shins after too many weeks on the hard surface or something? Just guessing, but something like that could be what he means by "Always is a reason, but it's personal.” :

This is how he should hit the ball on hard courts more often.

I think if it was anything physical, he would be upfront about it (he has always been in the past). The word "personal" seems to be pointing to a different direction. As I said before I hope I'm reading too much into it and that whatever the problem is, it will be out of his way by the start of the clay season...

Don't be too beat up about the personal thing. Everything he says before it is very positive.

RAFAEL NADAL: Always is a reason because you are not playing at your level during the tournament. No, I am calm. I am happy about myself, about everything this year, yeah. I don't know. Always is a reason, but it's personal.
1. He is calm.
2. He is happy about himself.
3. He is happy about everything this year.

I don't see anything very worrisome. I think Delpo played better than Nadal thinks, but Nadal obviously wasn't his best.

Definitely,no byes and best of five finals make that even more impressive but as far as back-to-back tourneys go I'm most impressed with Roddick's Canada+Cinncinati+USO run in 2003,I don't think anyone ever accomplished that besides him(although Fed was close in 2007).

Patrick Rafter did it as well. But yes, the Cincy and Montréal/Toronto double is much harder to pull off.

How badly do I want a Cincy Roger/Rafa final... unfortunately it's not too likely. It's the tourny I get to attend and I would love to see them play each other in person.

Wow, just found out Del Potro beat Nadal. Heard Nadal was very sub par though which would explain the result..

Some facts about the match. Humidity started at 75% and got up to 93% close to the end of the match. The temperature was like 75 degrees. You could definitely see the effects of it. Nadal's shots were dropping short and not bouncing much. Breaking serve was pretty easy as proven by the 4 breaks in the last set. Nadal does great on clay because he gets very high bounces. Hard courts don't bounce as much anyways. Add humidity to it and Nadal looks very vulnerable. Nadal's slice was not looking good and he seemed to get very impatient. He was very negative and I made me a little angry watching him act that way. Just a bad week for him. Clay should change his frame of mind. :D
Wow, this takes the cake.

This has gotta be the first time I've ever heard someone blame the humidity as an excuse for losing a match.

I would disagree. Confidence, which I'm sure most people would believe to be very important in any sport, does not come from how you think the opponent is playing or played, but from how you view the game. If you believe you can win and can play well or are playing well, your confidence goes up, you relax more, and can play better.
What I'm saying is that whenever you lose to someone you have always beaten in the past, of course you're going to say that you think you played like crap. No need for Nadal to even say it. What he says after the fact is irrelevant. Everyone saw the match with their own eyes. We don't need the players to tell us how well the played after the match. We saw how well they played. They can't change what happened out on the court after the match is over. So what's more interesting is their view on how well their opponent played. Nadal never admitted that Del Potro outplayed him, which is what I saw while watching the match.

You should watch the match. Nadal was not sub-par. Del Potro just took it to Nadal and didn't let him breathe. DP was outgunning Nadal from the baseline and was volleying as if he was McEnroe. :)

Rafa has been through all conditions: rain(Wimbledon) intense heat(AO) and really high winds last time against Andy Murray. He has survived the lot and come through like the incredible champion he is. The clay season is on the doorstep. Why go through another exhausting battle on Sunday when his beloved clay court season is just around the corner. If he does have a personal problem then it will give him time to sort his mind out. He doesn't have to prove anything at the moment

Excuse me?! The weather conditions were different for Del Potro? I think Nadal should be able to handle hot weather much better than Del Potro. Spain is way hotter than Argentina. I just can't accept that your hero got defeated. Period.

I'll try to explain this the best I can. Humidity makes the ball slower and lower bouncing. I think conditions like this favor the flat ball hitters. Defensive players find it tougher to defend when their shots sit up nicely for the other player rather then jumping up rapidly at them. The flatter hitter finds it easier to control the ball due to the balls not flying on them as much.

Now I am a huge fan of nadal but ur comments just make me laugh sometimes they are so ridiculous. Talk about catching at straws. When nadal was playing agressive he was winning the points. Then her started getting too defensive and Del Potro turned up the heat and guess what, he lost. Nothing to do with humidity.

I heard DP a few weeks ago saying that he needed to develope a new and more consistent net game to win against the best players...Apparently he´s working very well :)

You are spot on with that analysis...DelPo continued hitting aggressive shots which put Nadal under pressure and pushed him back further behind the baseline...and this is what amazes me...as to why Fed insists on rallying with Nadal from the baseline :-?

List of excuses by Nadal_Freak during and after the match between Nadal & Del Potro:-

~Nadal tanking like he needs to do. Less than 2 weeks is the clay season.

~Nadal decided he wants to win this match afterall. I think Del Potro pissed him off.

~Yeah I can. Rafa looked uninspired and quiet for a set in a half. He got annoyed with Del Potro calling late challenges and started to bring in the intensity soon after.

~Nadal has 13 days to rest for Monte Carlo if he loses. I didn't know they squeezed the schedule again this year. I thought they fixed that.

~It's a complaint about how compact the schedule is. For good reason Nadal should lose. He probably isn't thinking about that right now but he does seem to act tired. He probably would enjoy that extra rest.

~Well Rome is on clay. Nadal had some struggles there as well. Hamburg is also very humid. No surprise the tournaments Nadal struggles with are the most are humid. Nadal's shots go short and don't bounce as high. Just look how much Nadal loved Indian Wells.

~These humid conditions are really detrimental to Nadal's game. Nadal would rather play indoors imo than in Miami.

~The only way humid conditions can help is if it can tire the other opponent more as well.

~AH I'm angry.

~Nadal lost in Miami. So what? Yeah he is way ahead of everyone on the rankings. The conditions don't suit him there. Monte Carlo is only 13 days away. The exciting times are just beginning. Vamos.

~Yeah really. This loss will benefit Nadal. He will be fresher for the clay season due to it. He needs every bit of those 13 days to recover fully for the clay season.

~Nadal gave DP this match. DP did nothing to earn it.

The last one takes the cake!

Now, what exactly is your point? Some TT member is offering up reasons/opinions about why he thinks Nadal isn't winning. I guess I don't understand your intent.

Is your point that Nadal Freak represents everyone who appreciates Nadal as a tennis player?

My intent was to give everyone a laugh at the expense of Freak's trollish posts ;)

LOL. crushing.

Well I was in a bad mood. A very unpleasant day at work followed by watching Nadal looking all upset during his match and making unusual errors. He's no machine and that was the case today.

Well said exactly - Nadal is no machine and thank heavens for that - unlike some who play consistantly well for years and then break down - and shock horror when they do! People cannot understand why their machine isn't producing the goods anymore.

Don't forget that is was getting dark, making it nearly impossible for Rafa to see the ball.

I'm sure Nadal would like to win every Masters title. He's never won this one, and this year may represent his best chance. He was definitely trying. He didn't tank this match because he was thinking about clay court preparation. I was surprised that DP didn't wilt when he saw Rafa dig in and try to win.

There is no point. Simply, he is a troll. His purpose on this board is to troll, pollute threads and abuse people who do not worship Federer. That is all he do here. Quite sad actually.

Thank you! I'm trying my best to be as good a troll as you are but I guess theres still a long way to go before I reach your level of trollish behavior...do you offer coaching?

ROTFL ! :)

Congrats to Delpo-I think he raised a few eyebrows with this win. I'm sorry that Nadal lost-I hope everything is ok w/him.:)

Are you kidding me? You finally left my topic after harassing everyone who didn't think that Djokovic has been one of the Top 5 players of this year. You did the exact same thing as you define in your quote, which makes you a troll too.

Don't forget that is was getting dark, making it nearly impossible for Rafa to see the ball.
Actually, Del Potro slightly moved one of Nadal's water bottles on a changeover which caused Nadal to become completely disoriented on the court and collapse in failure. Nadal got so confused that he didn't even know what country he was in after the match.

We all have opinions about players and the reason(s) why they win/lose matches.

This is the beginning of the end of Nadal.

He got pwned by DelPo!!!! LOL

If he loses to Delpo at their next meeting I may agree with you. I'm betting Delpo will be thoroughly embarrassed when they play next time.

We'll see

OMG what an arrogant and ungracious loser! he cant accept the fact that his opponent was better:D

Selective reading. He did acknowledge that very explicitly in his interview:

RAFAEL NADAL: But anyway, you can say one thousand things about this, but in the end, the important thing is I didn't play well. I lose and he play better than me.
Q. And Del Potro again, what makes him so effective?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think he didn't play one of his best matches, no? That's what I feel. I don't know. You can ask him later maybe.
But I think he played well. His level is 7 of the world, no, so he's very good. I think he didn't play an unbelievable match, but I didn't play on my best level today.
