Race to YE#1 - Nadal leads Djokovic by ~ 2000 points

I hope Rafa takes rest of season off..couldnt care less about YE1 tbh.

I'd like Rafa to be year end number one but I'd be even happier if he took rest of year off as I feel this would aid his chances in next year's AO and other slams.....Not much left in him I'd say so best off trying to do everything to be fit/rested for slams.....

I'm only a fan of Rafa so I didn't think of how Federer would benefit :)
Rafael Nadal is my favorite player.
Federer leads at 310 weeks. Djokovic is currently at 272 weeks I believe. So Nadal has a chance to get the top ranking if things don't go smoothly for Djokovic in the next few tournaments. Nadal's reign at no1 was 196 weeks. He probably would want to add to that I think.

196 weeks is enough for me, since the world only cares about the slam record :)
Plus Rafa is known for being injured all the time, so it'd be impossible for him to be ranked #1 much.

And I bet hardly anyone in the world knows many weeks each player was ranked #1.
Heck, 99% of tennis fans wouldn't even know how many weeks Rafa and Djokovic have at #1.
And wait a few more years and 99.9% of tennis fans won't know, as virtually nobody remember's how many weeks Sampras was ranked #1....

Playing Puerta in the Roland Garros Final looks like Mount Everest when you compare it to Cilic's performance in the 2017 Wimbledon Final....

Nope, that;'s not how it works.

Djokovic is now 1500 behind in the race. And still 3500 available.
Oh I know, but I'm 100% certain Rafa will finish #1 if Djokovic doesn't win Shanghai :)

286. Just because you want that to be true doesn't mean it IS true.

Using the same logic Federer coming back from a set and break down against Baghdatis is an insane effort compared to someone like Nadal against Djokovic in this year's AO final.

Baghdatis>Nadal

Here is my assessment, if rafa can win paris then his points will be 10225 so assuming djokovic wins Shanghai and reaches paris final then his tally will be still 900-1000 points behind rafa and at wtf even if novak wins undefeated then still he would need rafa to lose in group stage which I think is unlikely. So overall it's in rafa's hand to win it if he can have a good paris and wtf.Only scenario I see djokovic winning would be rafa having a dismal fall and djokovic winning 2 out of remaining big 3 tournaments
Considering Rafa has never won in Paris I find this somewhat a wish rather than a prediction

This loss basically takes the YE #1 out of Djokovic's hands. Up to Nadal now, how much he plays and how much he wins - though even then Djokovic needs a strong showing in Paris/YEC to make up the gap.

Djokovic might still decide to play Vienna or Basel. I will not be surprised if he does.

Still wouldn't rule out Nole winning both and Rafa only maybe having a QF at Paris and maybe 2 wins at YEC.......

If Rafa makes the Final in Paris, it doesn't matter if Djokovic wins it, Rafa will go into the WTF as #1, providing Djokovic doesn't play any other tournament.

That would be a sad look for Djokovic. Nadal is out there fishing saying he doesn't really care if he ends the year no.1, while Djokovic is playing minor tournaments to desperately hold on to ranking points.

I remember Martina Hingis doing the same thing to stave of Serena Williams from the no.1 ranking when Serena had clearly become the best player, and it was a sad look to see a great top player vulture minor tournaments to keep up appearances.

Not true. In the official ATP rankings Rafa is still behind Djokovic by 320 points. Djokovic is defending 600 points for the final last year, if he wins, he gains 400 points to have a gap of 720. Rafa isn't defending any points but would only gain 600 with a final showing. <-- All this is obviously only if Djokovic doesn't play Vienna/Basel (he might very well play, it's 10 days until it starts, plenty of time to recover).

Djokovic lost by a whisker today , he is playing well . No shame in losing to an in form player .
I think he will play Vienna or Basel ..

A whisker? Lol!

He got thrashed in the final set by Tsitsi. Djokovic needs to avoid some of the stronger next gen guys ( Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev) and Wawrinka. And Nadal and Thiem on clay.

He's so far from unbeatable, it's not funny. You can't rely on facing the likes of John Millman to win every tournament.

If Djokovic is gonna play these minor tournies, it shows his desperation to hold onto that ranking and at the same time, sacrifice his health and body which could have dividends for next season. Dude is 32. He needs as much rest as he can get.

6-3 5-7 3-6 is not thrashing ??lol
and final set was close . He even saved 2 match points . It was a very close match . Some times you win , some time you lose .
Djoker is playing well ,inspite of the loss .

For all he's achieved (which has been magnificent), I believe Djokovic remains insecure about being perceived as the "third wheel" behind Nadal and Federer.

So things like YE No.1 take on greater significance for him. If he gets another one he can say, "I got more than them". Wheras neither Nadal nor Federer really give a damn at this point. They just want more slams. Djokovic is the insecure younger brother.

Saying that, I'll be surprised if he plays these minor tournaments, even if he knows it's his best hope. He'll know it looks desperate

So Federer could play them at 37 but not Djokovic at 32?

At this point, Novak just needs to let it go. He needed to win Shanghai for even a glimmer of hope. I’m disappointed but it is what it is. I knew bombing out and disappointing early in the year would come back to bite him in the behind.

Djokovic not out of race yet. He could add 2500 points from remaining two events. Nadal has to win 1200 points to make it out of reach which is unlikely.

Djokovic' biggest concern is his consistent failure to put away young generation players. It is difficult for him to go unbeaten at WTF when Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Thiem and Zverev will be playing there. All four have scored victories against him in last 12 months.

The Paris Masters and the ATP Final are in his schedule.

i know. But he hasn’t played in weeks and the link you provided states his hand injury is still there. Well, none of the Big 3 are kids anymore so I guess they have to choose carefully what they play.

I think the hand thing, while real, is merely a copout to skip everything until Paris, with the wedding and everything. He said it is actually something recurring, and didn’t sound too concerned about it. The swelling is probably down by now.
