Racket Throwing/Argumentative Match

I have posted matches before and I have lots of matches videoed from 2015 that need editing (which is a painstaking process).. I think posting snippets of points or practice is not a good indication of evaluating a player..There are so many more things involved than forehand technique ie: strategy, defense, endurance, court positioning, consistency, variety etc
My opponent is USTA 4.5 league player at mostly #2 singles. He lost his cool and we had several disagreements over line calls.. i ended up beating him in a marathon 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)..He's 6 inches taller than me and outweighs me by 80lbs..He's also in law enforcement and packs a weapon so i don't want to mess with him..he even had an argument with a woman who walked on our court near the end when we were in the tiebreaker but the film ran out..I agreed with him on that point..PS the wide angle lens that gives you such a nice picture slows play down some.

What is the question?

He's in law enforcement, the weapon carrying sector, and he behaves like that at 5:55 over a rec tennis game? Hmm...
I know... but coming off the night shift to play and i know he has 2 young kids etc..Who knows what he has going on in his personal life..

Your opponent has a very consistent first serve--quite surprising since he scatters his toss everywhere.

It is a tough profession, but keeping in mind recent events, you might be doing everyone a favor by writing to the PD about him. There used to be a Federal border inspection guy at my club who used to get into a fight with everyone, till he found no one to play with and stopped showing up. He had an argument over backing up a car in the parking lot, and told me that if he doesn't like somebody, he enters his name into the Federal database as a possible drug dealer, and the guy is then not allowed to board any flight for years. I don't know if it is true, but it at least shows the way he thinks, especially if he thinks such "jokes" are OK.

You cannot be serious....!

I always wanted to do that. But seriously, I wonder if tennis isn't fun for most of us precisely because we take it very seriously.

You actually need to take effort and time to learn and put things in perspective. Nothing, especially good thing, is automatic. I have done that. Last 8 months I have achieved a huge "mental" milestone. I no longer care about negative, serious games in which players argue or seriously trash talk each other. In such games everyone tends to hold their breath and stiff. Any wins you get is soon negated by blaming or some other trash talk. Player's skills are meaningless in these games.

I notice that the entry-level like players and fair minded people (you call your side, I call mine kind) usually give very fun and challenging games if YOU take the opportunity to try out new things.

You can't do anything with a bunch of wins after you leave the courts.

He just got frustrated with your no pace, pusher pusher tactics.

Not sure what the big deal is.

He's also in law enforcement and packs a weapon so i don't want to mess with him

Well, you're the wrong color for a start.

Can't say I've ever heard of any story about "Policeman shoots Pusher during tennis match".

The only serious words I've ever had with someone over a tennis match..the guy was an ex-cop. I have 2 cops in my current league and they are both good natured guys.

However, in too many cases, you give a non-exceptional, working class knuckle head bully a gun and a badge and tell them that automatically makes them a hero, you get people with chips on their shoulders and wildly oversized egos. It's a profession that attracts bullies for obvious reasons. Like I said, the majority of cops I know are not like this, but it only takes a few. I can pretty much read them coming from a mile away. The problem with the other cops who aren't like this, is that they tend to look the other way at it, "you just don't understand...". The person who said you should contact the PD about him...yeah, that's a great idea. They'd laugh at you, and the next thing you know the guy would be after you.

Good. Then that would provide a quick way to get rid of him. And much betterthan waiting for him to shoot some teenager 16 times.

I invite you to go to war with the local police, and see how well that turns out. They can and will make your life miserable. I prefer to just avoid having any interactions with them.

You started off the match getting everything _very_ deep and he blew a lot of shots early. He tried to come to the net but it appears his net game is not really that good. Plus, you are able to keep shots low on him when he does come in. The lobs appeared to **** him off. Both of you painted the lines a great deal. And I was surprised just how much running you were both able to do. I am actually surprised he did as well as he did, given how consistent you are and how streaky he can be.

When he throws his racquet at 5:55 - LOL.

I play some guys like this. They have horrible technique and blow easy winners just like this guy. And every point they will say out loud - "I gave that away!".

I just laugh at them and shake their hand after I win. Too many tennis players get caught in the trap of trying to hit the ball at a higher level than they actually are. I have been there too. The good ones figure out how to get past that. The bad ones act like whiney kids and throw their racquets.

His official NTRP is 4.5 but I've never seen a 4.5 miss so badly on such an easy shot at 5:55. Or foot fault so blatantly at 0:14...

Do these cops carry their weapons onto the court, in their tennis bag?

so what's the big deal with him getting mad that he was losing a match?
are you gloating over the win, and additionally want to put your opponent in a bad light?
you played very consistently, and frustrated the hell out of him (i've lost to guys like you, good placement/super consistent, and it's frustrating)... but seems like poor sportsmanship to additionally post the vid to highlight how frustrated you got him..

I've seen top pros miss an easier shot than that.

Do you seriously not think there's not a huge temper issue if someone explodes like that over an inconsequential recreational game? And this someone is supposed to be a disciplined, restraint professional no less.

I really want to know how many racquets he brings to each session?

Well, in that case, half the pros should be in jail given that they should be more disciplined, mentally robust and professional than any hack rec player.

I didn't know that rec players were playing with their careers and immediate income on the line. That usually tends to ramp up the pressure a little bit for most people.

But how is it 'on the line' when they've earned millions already? Murray was smashing racquets only a couple of weeks ago yet his net worth is in the region of $70m. He's not exactly on the breadline.

Doesn't matter - it is his job and he wants to win for ratings, money, and many ulterior professional reasons. It's not a recreational activity meant for exercise and enjoyment.

I shouldn't have to explain this.

Racquet throwing is an expression of frustration. It's not exclusively related to careers, prize money etc. You can get frustrated in any game, in any sport, at any level. Neither is tennis just a 'recreational activity' for 'enjoyment and exercise' as there's obviously a competitive and winning element involved. If you've ever played any USTA tourneys or leagues, people take it VERY seriously.

Yes I have played USTA tournaments and not everyone does. A lot of people really had a great time even when losing, and yes they were good players. Not everyone takes it that seriously, and when they do they risk looking like fools.

You are right, of course. I have been the racquet-throwing a$$h%l€ in the past, too, and I can understand being frustrated. It wasn't until I understood why I kept screwing up that I learnt to calm down and focus on the next point that I stopped most of that. I still talk to myself when I play (mostly in a monotone that my friends think is kinda creepy).

But I have never tried to cheat or blame my opponent. And that's where I draw the line.

I am lol'ing mainly because I can identify with the tall guy. OP is a serious 4.5 pusher and the tall guy can't do anything about it. Must be very frustrating. I would expect a better net game for a 4.5 #2 singles player though. However, how good you look at net depends on the quality of the approach shot. I think the tall guy is just having an off day for his offensive game. He just lost it when getting beat by a pusher. I can't say it has never happened to me.

Some serious foot faulting going on here. Guy needs to see the video just so he can't claim he doesn't know. How tall is this dude?

Don't think that guy is a 4.5 either. Looks to be a middle level 4.0.

Hahahaha, that dude is a plonker. He should go for some anger management therapy or emotional oneness / sensitivity camps - whatever free courses they have available for cops there:)

Ha. The biggest rager I've met in my life was a cop. He would start chucking his racquet, swearing at the top of his lungs, and yelling at everyone in the first game of the first set. Unbelievably angry. He would come completely unhinged if he started making errors. After he started physically threatening some of us (over really silly stuff), we decided not to invite him along anymore. Sounds like he found the perfect career, though.

Yeah the guy was a little extreme but lots of people play tennis to relieve stress from their personal life. Of course this thread is totally off the rails just because the guy happened to be a police officer.

Plus it is incredibly frustrating to play against pushers.

That makes sense, since his opponent's pushing style are generally not effective beyond the 4.0 level. I can't see either beating the #2 4.5 players at my club. The cop would struggle to get a game. The pusher might get three at the most.
