Racquet matching weight with different strings

I just received two racquets that I paid to have matched. They do have different strings and I was wondering how much of a weight difference the strings could have. There appears to be a 4 gram difference between the racquets.

One racquet weighs 324 grams with Pro Red Code Wax 17 / Babolat Origin 16. The other racquet weighs 328 grams with Lux ALU Power Soft 16L / NXT Power 16.

Does the weight difference between the racquets sound reasonable? The ALU 16L is the same diameter as the Red 17.

It seems to be a little bit big of a gap to me, as usually strings only weigh roughly 15 grams, so that's almost a third less for the Wax/Origin which seems a little much, but that's not to say it's impossible. I'd just double check it after you break or when you need them restrung and can weigh them without the strings in them.

In addition to different strings' density, gauge difference plays a big part too. Don't forget string gauge is actually a range of thickness, and different manufacturer use different end of the range for a particular gauge.

You paid to have the frames matched without strings? Or did you ask for 2 frames that are close to what you want without strings? There's a big difference if you asked for option 2 vs option 1. Close is not the same as matched. Note that you cannot ask for matched frames with strings because when the retailer goes thru their stock, they will not string up the frames with your chosen string, then match them. Now that this is out in the open, are the balance and SW close? Which is more important to you?

Your second question is related to mass of strings. They will be different because your crosses are not made from the same material. 4 grams is a little big, but if different gauges are also involved, is possible.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Prior threads also mention that string weights could be different but the jury is still out on those.

They came from the big website in TX. I paid to have them matched in weight and SW. They say they were matched but they do not keep records of what the weights were. My guess is that they did it with the plastic and cards on. I don't know what the SW or balance is as I have not tested it yet.

I do have full set weights on the following strings:
Pro Red Code Wax 17 - 21 grams
Babolat Origin 17 - 17 grams (Note that this is 17 gauge and not 16)
Lux ALU Power Soft 16L - 20 grams

There is a 1 gram difference between the Red Code and ALU but once you factor in half sets in the crosses it's 1/2 a gram or less difference. That means that the Origin and NXT would need to be 3.5 grams difference for the racquets to be the same.

It would be nice if they were exactly the same so when I do decide on what strings I like best, they will both be the same. I don't expect the racquets to match while they have different string and I realize this weight difference is about as much as a dampener. It seems like sending them back may be overkill and I should just modify them when the day comes.

It is impossible for 2 polys of same diameter, to differ by 4g, in a same string bed.
Tylically, poly is 1-2g heavier then gut, which is 1-2g heavier then syn/multy.

That's why I am still skeptical. It means that there is at least a 3.5 gram difference between a half set of Origin and NXT which seems doubtful. Will be speaking with the person who matched and strung them shortly.

The plastic on handle and card in hoop are not the same mass frame to frame. How high up the handle the plastic wraps is not the same on all stock frames. Neither is the thickness of the card stock. I could easily see a 2 gram difference just based on this factoid. Their assumptions are not valid. If they measured the frames on an RDC, odds are the SWs are not the same either if plastic/card were left on. Close, but not the same. 3¢

This is a great reason to measure and adjust racquets when changing strings. Believe I added 4g when going from 16g to 18g crosses. Also some strings stretch more than others so weights before stringing dont mean that much

I realize the plastic and card would make matching more difficult. Have you heard of places matching racquets without them on?

I'll find out their true weights when I restring them. One would expect the weights to be slightly different with different strings. It's interesting that according to an earlier linked post, the SW could change as much as 10 points with strings that are 5 grams heavier. It adds an extra dynamic to testing out different strings in the same or even matched racquets.

Here's something interesting... I paid for the lighter racquet to have Lux ALU Power Soft 16L / NXT Power 16. Upon closer examination it appears the NXT could be 18. Can anyone tell me their thoughts from the images below? It looks like 18 and not 16. If the NXT (white strings) were 18, they would be thinner than the silver strings. This would also tell me why there is a weight difference.

Here are the string diameters:
Lux ALU Power Soft 16L 1.25
NXT Power 16 1.30
NXT Power 18 1.21

Mystery solved! I sent the photos to the company and they admitted it was NXT 18. Can't say I've ever been happy to receive the wrong strings before.
Yeah, they definitely aren't as nice of a store as TW. I'd stick to TW unless there's a product Texas has that TW doesn't.

I hear you. I had a certain timeline in mind for a new racquet and they just happened to have a Pure Aero demo first. I was either going with the new VCore or Pure Aero. The VCore felt most similar to my old racquet but the Pure Aero feels like it brings something different to the table.

$20 off each racquet helped my decision. The TW matching service definitely sounds better.
