I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of the racquets used by ATP No. 1 players (in reverse order of getting their No. 1 ranking). I listed racquets used at the time the player went No. 1.

I could use some help from some of the long-timers here who remember what McEnroe used when he first went No. 1. I saw photos of him from 1980 and he has a Wilson stencil on a wood racquet, but I don’t know what model it was. Same goes for Newcombe – not certain is it was a Spaulding or not. His racquet has an “S” stenciled on the strings.

Does anyone happen to know?

It was interesting to note that Connors was the first No. 1 to use a non-wood racquet in the steel Wilson T-2000. The first to use a graphite racquet was either McEnroe or Lendl. They were trading the No. 1 spot back and forth in the early-to-mid 1980s and I’m not sure when McEnroe switched to the Dunlop 200G.

Any help on that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

Macs wood Wilson frame was the Kramer Pro Staff. Newcombe had a pretty long go with Rawlings I think and used a Rawlings metal frame. Dont rem what he used when he was at or near the top

you should do a search some time in the future....many of those are wrong...from what i know:

JCF uses flexpoint radical tour (there's pics in these forums somewhere)
Moya uses a softdrive w/o the woofer
federer uses the prostaff 6.0 (it's been states at 88.5 sq in)
agassi is known to have used the instinct as well

snoflewis- read the whole article, they are saying what racket they used when they were #1, not what they use now.

Ah.............Ferrero never used the NXG Graphite, he was using the POG Longbody before he switched over to Head.

the list, whichis very thorough and interesting, good job on it, is stating what racquets players are said to have used, or were endorsing when they were number 1.

also, johnny mac used the dunlop maxply didnt he? i dont recall a krmaer staff when he was up in hte top 3.

McEnroe NEVER used the wood Kramer, he used the Pro Staff (two diamonds on it); later the Dunlop Maxpli Fort, then the 200g.

Lendl finished his career using the Mizuno Eagle One.

Becker switched from the Puma to Estusa.

Newcombe used the aluminum Rawlings; Smith, the Pro Staff, then the aluminum (red plastic throat) Head Pro.

Arthur Ashe won the 1975 Wimbledon with the Head Competition Composite (aluminum face sandwiched over fiber).

the poster asked what wood WILSON frame Mac used. Also there were two wood Kramers. The Kramer Autograph and the Kramer Pro Staff as I stated which was the one with the brown diamonds

Both Lendl's and Becker's racquets were the same as they were using before; Lendl's Mizuno Eagle One was actually an Adidas GTX Pro-T (that Adidas actually got from Kneissl), and Becker's Estusa was a Puma Boris Becker Super, though I'm not sure if they kept the 'extendable' feature; on the Super you used a key on the buttcap to extend the racquet's length. Mizuno and Estusa simply bought the moulds from the previous companies.

BTW does anyone remember the name of the Puma racquet that Becker used when he won Wimby '85? It was silver and red, almost identical to the Super...'Winner' perhaps?

Yes it was called the Boris Becker Winner.

The silver Puma that Boris used was called the Guillermo Vilas Winner. Moya used to use the Soft Drive, but he then switched to the Pure Drive.

Pure Drive, tubular beam vs. Soft Drive, box beam

I believe the OP said "used", referring the racquets they used when they were No. 1, not "uses".
