Rafa defends Murray

From his Halle presser:

Q: The other day Tommy Haas said that sometimes Andy Murray is faking injuries. Do you agree with that opinion?

NADAL: I can’t say nothing wrong with Andy. He’s a great guy. In my opinion if we talk about what happened at the French Open against Nieminen that’s why probably. In my opinion, he never does this to bother the opponent. So, that’s the most important thing. It’s difficult to explain but I really believe in Andy. I think he’s a fair guy, a good competitor. I’m 100% sure that he was doing nothing to bother the opponent, to take advantage. The disadvantage was for him in the French Open against Nieminen when that happened in the beginning of the match. At the end, he came back. The real thing is when he was in injury in Paris at the beginning he was losing 6-1, 3-1. So, that’s the real thing.

Trying not to take anything away from Nadal's words, but, it's funny to see him defending a player accused of cheating, especially as he has used this tactics himself.

The irony of Rafa previously being accused of such tactics is not lost on me.

When it comes to questionable tactics, injuries that appear and disappear and overall gamesmanship, asking Nadal to comment on Murray is like asking Snooki what she thinks about Paris Hilton's lack of intelligence.

"He's an inspiration to us all, no?"

I often feel Andy's habit of clutching various parts of his body when down in matches comes from, what I think is a way of rationalizing. I don't think he's trying to throw off anyone per se but its sort of like he 'feels' the pain when he's losing as some sort of a psychological defence against the potential loss. I noticed this in the AO 2010 final too. Andy grabbing his lower back all the time in the third set. I just think he's too uptight on court. But I guess its hard with all the pressure he has to prove himself.

Injuries aren't as simple as "I am hurt and it will prevent me from moving well for the remainder of this match, no matter what". Injuries are met with the adrenaline of the competition, and are overcome. Surely this is common knowledge for anyone who's played sport. And it's not "cheating".

Yeah that's rich coming from Nadal! Of course Andy is a great guy...He always rolls over for him whenever they meet in Majors! :D

Interesting to see Nadal defend Murray of the very thing he indirectly accused Novak of doing in 2011 USO.

Anyway as far as I'm personally concerned, grabbing your back/knee/whatever after the point is over isn't against the rules so it's fine by me, it's up to an opponent to focus on his game and not get distracted.

Yeah that's rich coming from Nadal! Of course Andy is a great guy...He always rolls over for him whenever they meet in Majors! :D

Murray has beaten Nadal twice at Majors - 2008 USO, 2010 AO. That is almost the same as Djokovic who only beat Nadal at 3 Majors - WIM 2011, USO 2011, AO 2012.

Murray beat Nadal two times in slams (on top of pushing him to 5 sets in their first slam meeting at AO in 2007), same number as Fed and only one less than Novak, that's not rolling over.

might have something to do with the fact that Rafa practically never ever drew Djokovic in his half in a hardcourt slam. Wasn't til 2010 that they'd actually met in a hardcourt slam. Murray was always the one getting Nadal while Rafa wasn't consistant on hardcourt, while Djokovic was always in with Federer. You look at Nadal now on hardcourt in slams and Murray looks like he has slim chance against him. I agree he doesn't "roll over" though. Just rafa is better than him most times.

Well said, Rafa. You never hear him or Andy bad-mouth other players no matter what they might privately be thinking.

Rafa has shown his class. Tommy H should learn to take a leaf out of his book!

Saint Rafa would NEVER act human and citicise.

And Rolaids doesn't run his mouth? He does run his mouth, and so does his barbaric family. Did you listen to his dad's interview the other day at RG during the rain delay? He drunkenly proclaimed that Rolaids is the best player in the history of the sport, and that he will also be the best clay court player in the history of the sport as well within the next 4-5 years, surpassing Nadal. He also b*tched about Toni coaching from stands(like Rolaids doesn't get coached himself during matches),and generally made a total a** of himself. His family and team were also celebrating during the rain delay, and announced Rolaids had already won and were drinking champagne and getting sloshed. They were even throwing their party right next to Nadal's family and friends without any shame whatsoever. Exemplary folks they are let me tell you.

Is there something wrong with you clarky? You are one of the most defensive paranoid people here. WHEN DID I SAY DJOKOVIC DIDN'T RUN HIS MOUTH OFF???

I didn't. I was responding to someone saying Nadal and Murray NEVER did. Got it? EVERYONE has. That's my point.

Yeah, and my point is Nadal pales in comparison to Rolaids when it comes to running one's mouth off yet you had to take a dig at Nadal for giving an opinion.

Because someone said NADAL never did it. That's why I mentioned Nadal, genius. Do you get it now? Or are you gonna keepmaking excuses for your repeated knee jerk recations to everything which always go "yeah what about fed/djoko blah blah blah" often assuming the person has massive bias when that's false.

If someone said Djokoic never had a go at another player, I'd disagree too.

btw, I like how Nadal's digs are an "opinion"

Not sure I can hear Novak's dad say he's the best "in history". Being how he and the rest of Novak's family has acted in other moments though, I can't say I'd be surprised. It's quite amazing that Novak himself seems like a nice and classy guy with such a family and team...

Let's remember he was answering to something Fed had said.

What Tommy Haas said here seems completely unwarranted.

nah Federer had never mentioned Nadal in person and in fact could have been refering to anyone of the "supermajority" that agreed with Nadal ;) Or just about murray who he has mildly put down in the media several times. You can say he was talking about rafa, but if nadal made a statement without mentioning names there is no way in a century of sundays any of you nadal fans would read between the lines. Double standards.

Anyway point is Nadal is human like any other player, and like them is not above having a go at someone. Sorry to dissapoint all those who wish to cannonize him.

As for tommy haas, dunno why he brought it up. Though I agree with him. Even UK commentators have started to comment on his habbit of clutching himself when losing

Thanks - he's not a native English speaker so it's hard to tell; but Novak's Dad sounds a bit 'tired and emotional' as they say in Private Eye. But Novak isn't his Dad though. I'd be a bit annoyed if people had a go at me because my Father behaved badly.

BTW - why do you call him Rolaids?

He sounds a bit drunk to me,and based on the celebration they were having during the rain delay I'm not surprised

Because he skipped a 15 minute press conference a few months ago because he had "heartburn". I thought it was laughable so I started calling him Rolaids.

Nadal didn't say, that it is not the case with Murray. He said, that he doesn't do it to distract his opponents. :) But we KNOW, that it distracts the opponent, no matter what Nadal says.

And what does "completely unwarranted" means? If that is the truth, then I would rather hear it, "warranted" or not.

We've been through this many times, when someone (Fed in that case) talks about the players who have complained about the tour, he cannot have been excluding Rafa unless he had explicitly said so.

Let's also remember that when the journalist asked Rafa the question, he did make it seem like Federer had indeed mentioned him by name. Probably Nadal would have been a bit more diplomatic in his answer had he known that wasn't the case.

Yes he did. Go back and listen again. He says it at 1:01 on the video.

I noticed he was supposed to have said it then, and tried to listen several times, but can't make out the word.

And he said that the important thing is that he isn't trying to distract the other players, who should not get distracted by it.

You are terrible at following conversation. Once something that you have said, has been proven to be incorrect, you move to the next "point".

Anyway, to your next "point". It is basic human nature, that such things influence the opponent. That is why some people are doing it. It is not illegal, but it is unsportsmanlike. It is not in accordance with the spirit of the game Tennis. But I doubt that you will understand, what I am talking about.

Well, you certainly don't see any of the top players get distracted by their opponents' aches and pains. Murray certainly doesn't. When he played an injured Simon at MC last year, Murray kept moving him from side to side and drop shotting him at every opportunity. That's the way to do it and Murray's opponents should adopt exactly the same tactic with him when he exhibits signs of injury. As Batz correctly pointed out, every player is fit to play until he retires from the match and his opponent should always play him as if he is fit to play.

Holy ****. That's incredible. What a total lack of class. Even if it's true, a family member should never, ever comment on that.

People are complex and all that (and I think in many ways Novak's folks are great people), but in other ways (as shown by this) they are completely classless clowns. Screw that.
