Rafa & Djoker Final incoming...

The good news about the draw is that the two best clay players will reach the final to face each other. The HC specialist Thiem wont beat Djoker this time around.

The even better news?

We get to see Rafa stomp Djoker in the final. Win win for tennis.

Rafa: "Love the effort from you Djoker... but I have to do this... sorry... not sorry."

With the draws they got, Djokovic is in the final, it’s done deal. Some bizarreness needs to happen in order for him not to make it.

Up to Nadal, really. Everything depends on him.

There's pretty solid evidence that Thiem is better than Djokovic on clay, for example last year's RG semifinal, and the fact that Thiem has been to the past couple RG finals, while Djokovic has not.

He got some really tough draws between 2008-2014.

But you are correct, his draw does look cushy in recent times...

Edmund

That was in 2015 Djokovic’s best year and Nadal’s worst year. If anything this will play against Djokovic because Nadal will want to avenge this loss.
Does it really matter? Djokovic has clearly the mental advantage.

How many of these players have played best-of-5-set matches on indoor clay?

Ever since 2017 they have split their six meetings (3 wins each) with Nadal winning all the clay matches.
Why start at only 2017? If you are going to say before then that Nadal was poor, then everything before W 2018 was poor from Djokovic also. Two of the three wins Nadal has had against Djokovic were a poor version of him, and the last one while a good win came against a Djokovic would played three hour matches back to back nights and had less rest for the final day....a good win for Rafa, but it wasn't exactly the best scheduling.

Djokovic will like this chances. Great draw, perfect weather conditions, roof, new heavy balls, the best player in world and the form player.

Plus he matches up well against nadal on all surfaces even clay and has the mental edge in the rivalry now.

Nadal still deserves to be favourite due to his record at the french but this feels like his hardest one to win in years. He’s played very little in 6 months and the conditions are against him.

Curious why a Fed fan would want Nadal to win a presumed final between these two? Most Fed fans would probably be rooting for Djokovic, since a Rafa win ties Fed with 20 (obviously).
Many reasons. But the main one is because I like Rafa and not Djoker.

Feds legacy will never be touched, whether he ends up the TIGER or not is irrelevant. I would rather Fed share status with Rafa then Djoker.

at first glance yes, obviously, but try to put it into perspective..djok' 18 and then it's going australia and probably 19 right after that good chances.,.plus how many chances nadal will have in the future? only some chances on french soil more likely thereas djok will have his chances at each slam in the next several years , so..

It would be better for tennis if Djokovic wins because Rafa has already won it 12 times. On the other hand, If I see this from a Fed fan perspective, it would be better if Nadal wins it.

It's not all about the slam count.A Double Career Grand Slam would be an incredible achievement and Djokovic would be considered the GOAT by many. His career resume is already outstanding.

IMO Thiem's draw is being hilariously overblown.

Cilic and Opelka at RG? Bahahahaha
Stan and Monfils will almost certainly *not* make it to the R4/QF - if they do, they likely wont be playing nearly to their ceiling
Ruud is a kind of tricky R3, but big deal for a guy who has made back-to-back RG Finals

And then of course you have the same Nadal-Djokovic SF/F he always had, but in the confirmed Nadal-Djokovic order - which is the preferred order for Thiem (obviously better to face Nadal in a SF).

Everyone is sleeping on Thiem, and it's a joke

For many it is all about the slam count. Sampras, Lendl, Andre, Connors, etc. all agree slam count is the Mt. Everest in tennis. Only his fans would consider him GOAT with 18 majors when two others are in front of him. No question Novak's career resume is outstanding, however.

Yeah, because Djokovic didn't win enough titles, especially recently.

I would understand if you said it would be better for tennis to see somebody like Thiem, Zverev or Medvedev win. But Djokovic winning anything at this point is not good for tennis.

thiem and wawrinka not on the same side of the draw as djoko. nadal dispatches thiem/wawrinka and djokov dispatches nadal in the finals.

if djoko got thiem/wawrinka on the same side then yes, you'd be right - thiem/wawrinka dispatches djoko, and then nadal dispatches thiem/wawrinka in the finals.

very finnicky/nuanced rock > paper > scissors situation on clay.

wait, Wawrinka got wiped out by an 18 year old qualifier last week, why are we talking about him?

It's an interesting dilemma, psychologically, from a Federer fan perspective.

Better to concede 20 to Nadal to keep Djokovic's chances of reaching 21 less likely, or to keep the dream of holding on to the record alone alive while Djokovic gets closer to 20/21?

If Nadal gets GS record, some Federer fans would argue that there is weeks No1 issue. If Djokovic gets GS record, Federer fans have nowhere to go.

And yet @BeatlesFan seems to think Maestronians would more likely favor Djokovic in the matchup. I think it could really go either way. Not sure which way I'd lean as a Federer fan.
