Ironically, this win made me care much less about the slam race. Just made me happy that Rafa is still competing at the highest level especially after 2015/2016. Hope he can win more slams of course but I have no expectations for him anymore because he has already surpassed all of mine.
Same feelings. I honestly don't care about the slam race anymore.

agree, obviously he will be feeling better mentally in the upcoming slams, keeping it up in his head
Its been a long wait since he has won a tight match like this! And he did it again. I was sure he would lose after the 3set. Seeing xicsa crying in the 5th when he got broken and all that I felt that’s it. But he fought his nervousness and came through. He is ready wining these kind of matches again!

I will just say I am so glad I finally got to witness an epic final where I didn't feel the need to pick a side and could have just enjoyed the match, celebrating every good point no matter who won it.

Medvedev won me over but still big congrats to Rafa. He earned it, and it would be very brave to bet against him getting number 20 at next year's French.

It was an unreal feeling seeing him come through a match like that. Obviously he's had a few not unlike it in recent times, but even when he wins them (Del Potro, Thiem, even the Khachanov match here last year) they tend to not be finals, and there is no happy ending.

It's been a loooooooooooong time since he's come through a final (or semi final that is essentially a final - eg RG13, W18) like that. Especially with the hit his 5 set record has taken in recent years, with Medvedev with youth, and momentum on his side, and seemingly no nerves in sight... It did not look good going into that fifth (even if the kid has never won a 5th set), and his staving off of father time was glorious.

Less like that in the future though, please Rafa

Can I jump in? I am a tennis fan in general, and this of course makes me a Rafa fan as well.
Yesterday it was magic. Certainly what made Rafa better in the last games was his experience. Absolutely incredible, what a fighter (actually both).
I think Diego said it best. In the important points Rafa is like a lion in the jungle.
A word for Medvedev. He made the epic happen. Kudos to him. Loved his attitude as well. Intelligent and sharp, always trying to figure routes to improve in the match.

This is a special time for us all.

First I have to say a massive CONGRATULATIONS to everyone!!! I hope you are enjoying your day!

Winning USO is extra nice as we can enjoy this win long time until next slam. Not like RG when Wimbledon so soon after. Whole fall and Christmas resting on this slam. And it’s even more epic this time as it’s number 19!!! Rafa seem to be closing in the slam record, never been this close.

Personally I’ve slept 2 hours. Working 14 hours today, but it’s totally fine!! Feeling incredible good. High on the win and life is great!!
After 3 set yesterday I shut off Eurosport, put on a documentary about the Middle East and I tried to focus on something else. Then 125downthemiddle called me and wondered how I was doing, told me I should watch the 5th set. So I did having him on the line. I didn’t watch many service games of Rafa, just something here and there. He updated me and calmed me down. Really happy now I put Eurosport back on for the 5th set. When I am finished work late today I’m going to watch it again. Watch the trophy ceremony again too. Some parts of me still can’t comprehend everything what happened!!

How are you doing today fellow RafaManiacs?
How were you able to watch it on Eurosport? I have 2 Eurosport channels and neither of them have been showing any tennis.

Proud of Mad Lad's effort. Positive memories from this US Open as with the 2010s over now, I officially found a guy to root for in my fourth decade of watching tennis, having a favorite in each of the previous three.

And I can respect Nadal's huge efforts to not just stay relevant but also continue to win at this age. Will never be a fan but I recognize his greatness now more than ever before. Congratulations to him on the win, he earned it the hard way yesterday...

It’s been a while since we saw that lion in Rafa in big matches like this! It’s been years!
And yes Medvedev impressive! He didn’t crumble but stayed on fighting to the very end, he has the blood of a winner. I also loved how he expressed himself after the match, well done. He is fun to watch and fun to listen to!

Who are your previous 2 favourites before Novak? Medvedev has won me over as well, I will be supporting him from now on too, really hopes he wins a major in 2020.

I'm happy for Nadal's fans like Michael Nadal, Octobrina, Clayqueen, Vanio Man and others I can't remember off by heart. When I was on this site previously (I asked the mods to delete my previous account) I remember the Nadal 2015/2016 years when Nadal was a shell of a player and his decent fans held firm and believed that Nadal would make a comeback, their patience and loyalty paid off and I'm happy for them in particular.

As for Nadal he fought hard to beat Medvedev and I noticed Nadal got tight in key moments right up until his last serve when he drilled a serve down the T, so Nadal was in a battle with himself and with Medvedev.

That was a fun match to watch. After Rafa won the first set I thought he had it in the bag, in straights. Same thing after the 2nd and then the break in the 3rd. But he seemed to get nervous, even though it seemed like he was putting a lot of pressure on Medvedev. Next thing it's the 5th set, but he finds that way to get 2 breaks. Ok in the bag. Then he gives one up and almost the other, but being Rafa and a champion he finds his way. I had a feeling before the match that he would win and even as it got into the 5th set I still had that feeling. I never got a feeling that Medvedev was going to win, nor did I get a feeling that it'd go 5, so something was off with my feeling, or maybe I was ignoring it. Was fun to watch, I think I'll watch it again here when I have some free time.

I really enjoyed the final and was happy Nadal pulled it out in the end. For me, even though I wouldn't have minded Medvedev winning the final, if it was that Raf lost from two sets and a break up in the thrid, that would have sucked. Obviously he battled his own issues while battling a tenacious Daniil, and all's well that ends well.

So really more focused on what's next. I know YE #1 would level him with others, but I wish he could bow out of tennis at least until Shanghai in October. Laver in a few weeks isn't bad because there is no pressure, but would like him to get more time than that to recoup.

We will see.

I just want that ellusive AO in 2020!

A super emotional match from Rafa, that’s for sure. And this time he made it, in the right moment too :D
4 USO is massive for someone they thought would retire many years ago and clay court specialist. 4 slams are many slams ;)

Watching last set again now. had forgotten about almost all of it, the drop shot to get MP for example :p
Me thinks this will be a match Ill know just as well as USO13 final. Thats one of the few matches I watch over and over. I sometimes watch it if I need to get in a good mood. Rare I watch old matches over and over.
He barely beat Novak there. Was 1-4 down in the 3rd, then crushed Djokovic. Sometimes one or two points decide everything.

I liked the 2013 final a lot. 2013 was a bad year for me personally, and it may sound silly but watching Rafa comeback that year after how 2012 ended helped get me through. I think he played better in 2010, but the 2013 final is really special. We haven't had too many good finals at the USO this decade. Medvedev's fight in the last 3 sets really upped the quality because it also forced Rafa to up his level. Personally, I think it was the best USO final in the last 20 years.

Completely disagree.

Throughout the 90s and much of 00s most USO finales were 3-0 blowouts, or semi-lame 4-setters.

In this decade we had a bunch of great 4-setters: 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 5-setters in 2012 and 2019. USO used to be the slam with too many blow-out finales, but that's improved considerably during the Big 3 era.

No of 5-setters at USO finales from 1990-2008? Just one.

Mixture of emotions. It started as a match that I honestly wasn’t enjoying at all, although I was very impressed with Medvedev, but the shot making was dire.

It then changed to a match that had me screaming like it was the French Open Semi Final 2013!

Coming through matches like this just extends my admiration of Rafa’s mental strength and ridiculous concentration and consistency, although his time wasting was embarrassing.

Ultimately, Rafa dropping set 3 and 4 and looking the underdog at the start of the 5th just makes it all that much sweeter...

...VAMOSSSS :D:);)o_O
I felt very similar!

the match really wasn't that exciting and I thought Nadal would rap it up in the 3rd so I actually stopped watching for a bit.

then we all know what happened and I became glued to the screen.

I was very confident Nadal would win this USO, mainly due to how calm he seemed throughout the tournament. Nadal just had this Zen about him.

Anyway, I'm thrilled he won!

The only thing that gave me some pause is that he seemed to tire a lot at the tail end of this tournament even tho most of his matches were straight forward and he got a walkover from Kokkinosas (sic).

other than that, I'm all good.

Oh and thank goodness Medvedev seems like a worthy #4, now the draws might not feel so unfair to whichever of the Big 3 gets another in the semis.

nice post, but lions do not reside in the jungle, that would be tigers...

Feelings hard to put in words. Pretty excited. I had surgery today on my left knee. I am pretty sure yesterday's match was a double edged sword for me. Helped me calm down psychologically after Rafa's win, but I am sure the jumping up and down and sudden movements at errors, winners and basically almost everything post set 3 did not help out the surgeon much (torn meniscus repair).

All is well that ends well though. Rafa got the W in style and well, I will be back on courts in a couple of weeks as well myself :)(y)
