Rafa - Is he the first player to be the best on all surfaces?

He did reach 4 straight Wimbledon finals... 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. He didn't play in 2009, due to injury, so it's not even considered.

new low... bending the calendar for the rafexcusemachine!

^^ haha, you got me quite unexpectedly. I came in to make a silly wise-crack about Nadal being the best on clay and shakira while Federer is best on hard and mirka (an indoor court), but you got me right in the solar plexus :)

So, neither can ever be best.

If you go to the WTA tour both Navratilova and Graf were the best on all surfaces. Maybe Evert in some years but Navratilova was better on grass in some years Evert was number one I believe. I think Court was also as well as Lenglen, Wills and Connolly.

I think Bill Tilden in the 1920's was the best on all surfaces and I think Ken Rosewall in the 1960's was the best on all surfaces also.

You can argue Laver in 1969 but despite the 1969 French Open win over Rosewall I would still tend to think Rosewall was a little better on red clay. But for accomplishment on red clay that year I guess you would have to go with Laver.

Federer is better than Nadal on Hard court. Federer has more touch, more feel and more variety in his game. Nadal isn't even second best on hard court. There are several players, who have beaten him, on hard court this year

err, injury is part of the game, so he had three straight wimby finals, one non enter, and two wins total

but if finals were a measure of how great a player was on the surface, Fed would as good a clay court player as Rafa.

and with the "2nd best overall HC resume of all current players", he can't be "#1 on HC", but "#2". And he doesn't have the second best one, he has the luckiest one.

I stated 2nd best overall HC resume of all current players. Federer has a better overall Resume since he's 5 years older. However, Rafa's got a winning H2H against Federer on outdoor HC on which all of the GS tournaments are played.

Therefore, on outdoor HC, Nadal is currently the best in the world. If he happens to lose to Federer in Australia, I may change my mind. If he beats Federer then there is no doubt Rafa is the best player on all three surfaces, currently.

D'oh. There are several players who have beaten Federer on hard court this year. So what's your point?

There are several players who have beaten Federer on grass and on clay too this year. Geez, I guess that means Fed must be down near the bottom of any list on all the surfaces. :?

Federer won the AO did he not? He also has a masters series shield at a hard court. He has more points than Nadal on outdoor hard.

NADAL ISN'T THE BEST ON OUTDOOR HARD

If we bracket results for a moment, I still think Federer has the more versatile game for all court surfaces.

Nadal's game is a clay court one that he's gradually adapted to various surfaces perhaps aided by their slowness.

Open the brackets, he's certainly getting the best results.

Facts are your friend Jchurch. Nadal WAS the best on outdoor hard courts this year.

Exactly. That's why Guillermo Garcia Lopez is the best player in the world this year.

Against Ralph in 2010:

Clay:0-0
Grass:0-0
Hard:1-0

Thanks for your insight Dud.

Realistically Nadal will never have the resume on even "outdoor" hard courts as Federer. Federer already has 9 slams on outdoor hard courts. If Nadal even catches or slightly surpasses Agassi's career record on "outdoor" hard courts it would be amazing.

I am suddenly feeling awfully low . Someone please post some lolcats.

How so? Federer won a slam, was in a slam semi, won a Masters, and was in another Masters final on outdoor hard courts. Nadal won a slam, was in a slam quarter, and wasnt even in a Masters final on outdoor hard courts. They didnt face each other on outdoor hard courts. I dont see anywhere Nadal has the edge for the year on outdoor hard courts on Federer other than the prestige of the U.S Open vs Australia.

AA has 6 hc majors, Nadal has 2. If he doesn't win AO2011, I don't think he will catch up.

let's then even years of HC slams from Federer (and grass for that matter)

still has 5 HC slams under his belt. Oh wait, 2>5

and 4 Wimbledons too

and at 23 (Nadal is 24), Federer won the AO, USO, and Wimbledon in 2004.

and is it just me, or is it the 2010 season in which Federer won 1/2 of the HC slams and got farther in total than Nadal (a win and a semi as opposed to a win and a quarter. And is it just me or did Nadal make only two HC slam finals in all his years of playing?

plus, he isn't the best on all surfaces, just clay (and maybe grass, though that is debatable)

Rafael is not best on all surfaces. He dominates clay, but hard court is still not as dominate as other past legends were on this surface. During federer's peak, fed was pretty dominate. Let's just see where nadal is at 29, you can look dominate at your peak, but you shouldn't be called the best of all surfaces when someone clearly leads you a in a major category. Let me tell you a secret (people rush to conclusions here, it sickens me).
