Rafa Nadal is the best tennis player to ever live

Guys, you are taking the OP way too seriously.

After all, before the final the same poaster said that it is not going to watch the match (something including declining an invitation but seeing that Federer reached the final calling back and correcting the mistake) and will probably book a cruise for the time when Wimbledon 2018 is held, just to not be forced to poast on the forum, battling the evil Federer fans.

:D

Warning: This first one feels VERY hot coming off the fingertips. I don't consider myself a world-class take merchant, but I have been nurturing this one for a while, and I want to come out guns blazing. You might say that this is the hottest take of my life, because I fervently believe in its absolute truth. It's time for the Monday Superlatives, baby.

The Best Tennis Player to Ever Live: Rafael Nadal

Rafa Nadal (disclaimer: my favorite athlete) is the best tennis player to ever play the game. He is better than Roger Federer, the only other player with an argument now that Nadal has passed Pete Sampras on the all-time grand slam list with 15 major championships. I won't waste time comparing Rafa with someone like Sampras, who never even won the career slam. As far as I'm concerned, my only duty is to prove that he's better than Roger Federer.

First, because I'm a generous person, here are the arguments for Federer:

  1. He has 18 grand slam titles to Rafa's 15.

  2. There is no second argument. And by the time it's all over, Nadal, who is 31, will have more slams than Federer, who is 35.
Now, here are the arguments for the King of Clay, the greatest of all-time, Rafael Nadal Perera:

  1. His overall record against Federer is 23-14. The record on hard courts and grass is essentially even, with Federer holding a 12-10 lead, but Nadal's record on clay is 13-2.

  2. His overall career winning percentage is .825, which is higher than Federer's .817.

  3. As of yesterday, with his victory over Stan Wawrinka in the French Open, he is the only player to ever win 10 grand slam titles—a feat known as La Decima—in one tournament. (He has also accomplished La Decima at Monte Carlo and Barcelona.)

  4. Nadal is indisputably the greatest clay-court player in history, but outside of his favorite surface, he has won five grand slams. He has beaten Federer in grand slam finals on both grass and hard courts, and the trajectory of his career has been one of improvement as he overtakes Federer first on each successive surface. Meanwhile, Federer has exactly one grand slam title on clay, winning his only French in a year when Rafa was knocked out early. In their head-to-head showdowns, Fed is 0-5 against Rafa at Roland Garros.

  5. Nadal has two Olympic gold medals, one in singles and one in doubles. Federer has never won a gold in singles, settling for one silver. (He did win a gold medal with Stan Wawrinka in doubles.)
To be totally fair, there other arguments for Federer, such as the fact that he currently has more ATP titles. But does anyone consider Sam Snead better than Tiger or Jack because he won more often on the PGA Tour?

No way. And unlike Federer, Nadal has also had to fight his way back from injuries, which have resulted in fallow periods, and he's had to win all of his grand slam titles in the era of the Big Four, while Federer took a good chunk of his before Rafa, Djokovic, and Murray entered their primes. And ultimately, it is impossible to argue that Federer is the better player when his winning rate against Nadal is a paltry 38%. We could debate for hours, but that stat will always be the argument-ender.

If you're a Fed fanatic, I know you're not convinced. My argument has been, and will be, ridiculed by many tennis fans. But just wait—it's going to age beautifully, and when Rafa finally surpasses Roger's mark of 18 grand slams, there will no longer be any doubt. History shall vindicate this, the hottest of all tennis takes.

On the eve of Federer's record breaking 8th Wimbledon victory and 19th grand slam title win. Extremely untimely thread. This all just sounds a rant by a sore loser. It would've been classy if you congratulated him today and wrote this next week. I don't agree with you and I know anyone with reasonable mind wouldn't, but still, I would've been fine with this had you waited until next Monday.

This is actually my fault...OP wrote this post in June after Rafa won RG. I bumped this thread to correct her that Fed now has 19 GS. I haven't heard from her since Rafa lost in the 4th round and I'm worried about her. It's not a good day for Rafa fanboys these days....

Nadal will retire with 16 slams. He is a candle that's burning bright just when it's about to go off permanently.

Federer will win 22+ slams (we can only guess...but if the field remains open deep in 2018, anything is possible...he can go on streak of 17 USO, 18 AO and 18 W). He will also add a good 100 weeks at #1 and 2 years (2017 and 2018) of #1 finish. You heard it here first.

Had Nadal met Federer in this Wimbledon, Federer would have won in straight sets. Once again, Federer got denied an opportunity to clobber Nadal and reduce their H2H gap. Again, not Federer's fault that Nadal keeps losing in early rounds and avoids him altogether. The only time Federer has done it is USO 2013 (when Nadal would have beaten Fed on USO!!! Thank goodness Fed doesn't have to live by that blemish). Nadal has done this countless times now.

You could make arguments for Djokovic and Nadal before 2017 started and they would be valid arguments. Fed was a solid 3rd best player behind both of them starting 2010 for a good 7 years. That's a really long time, and indeed, the argument for GOAT was slipping away. But then, 2017 happened! Fed is on the cusp of 3 slams and a year end #1 and a clear cut best player of the tour once again and Nadal and Djokovic have seen their best days. Fed's beautiful style wins. Even at 36. Nadal and Djokovic's ugly grinding style loses. They won't do anything that Federer is capable of ever, because the body can last only that much.

Mind > body. Federer > Nadal.

I started this thread in June. What are you talking about? I haven't posted anything on TTW since before the Wimbledon final except on the Nadal News thread.

I just have to say I love your unbridled enthusiasm for Rafa. I disagree with you, but sir (or ma'am) I respect you!

You can safely start posting again when Monte Carlo starts on April 16, 2018. :p;)
I think the posting will start in Montreal. Nadal is playing better than 2013.

If Nadal beat Federer in Montreal i wonder if the effect will be the same on Federer as it was on Djokovic in 2013. Flip it around, if Federer beats Nadal again then advantage Federer

What on earth are you talking about?

:(

Actually this guy is the greatest. The bestest. The master.

Thats just next level…body serve to get him the short ball, then intentionally didn't put it away so he could show off the McEnroe half volley dropper.

I wish they'd give Sureshs a wild card to Cincy or USO.
