Rafa on 60 Minutes

Jon Wertheim did a surprisingly good job of the Rafa Nadal feature on the highly rated US show 60 Minutes. Both Rafa and his home of Mallorca look very good. :)

Here's a podcast of Jon Wertheim talking about being in Mallorca for a week. The stuff about Rafa starts about 8:40. Not surprisingly, the amount of talk about Federer in the podcast will make your eyes roll. I think it's thanks to some unbiased editors from CBS that the tv broadcast turned out to be about Rafa because it sounds like, as expected, Wertheim asked him a lot about Federer. He just can't help himself.

Sounds like I said it would be... a lot of nothing. It was for the public that is not on TTW. Some just now learning he exists sadly.

“Man, did you hear about this new tennis player named Rafy? The dude is the next Robert Feder.”

Maybe if Nadal was interesting as a stand alone player and not in the context of Federer there would be more questions about himself.
Wertheim's only question he asked Rafa about Fed was the same that journalists have asked over and over again: are Rafa and Fed friends? Journalists who are Fedfans have desperately wanted Rafa to say that he and Fed are friends. Rafa has always replied 'no'. This time he replied 'a little bit'.

Jon Wertheim: "A rival, a colleague, a friend – what is your relationship [with Fed]?"
Rafa replied (Translation from Spanish): "I think it's a little bit of everything. We've had a very intense rivalry throughout our careers, but it's been a very healthy rivalry. An elegant, respectful rivalry. We have also reached a stage in our lives where we are able to appreciate that it's not just about winning. "

Saccharine fluff piece. 15 minutes of free PR. At least they showed the picturesque harbor where he will build his dream home. The problem with its location is it will disrupt the path young diving enthusiasts take to return to a nearby cliff.
Rafa has lived near this harbor for decades. His new home is located across the bay from his parents' house, where he used to live. He bought the property with direct access to the sea at the beginning of 2013. The historical villa and other buildings on the property needed renovation. The renovation is probably still underway.

The property pictured in 2013:

From comments from Wertheim, it made me wonder if the old historical house was just too old and damaged to renovate as has been speculated for a long time. Wertheim kept referring to it as a 'plot of land' with no mention of the mansion that was originally standing. Maybe Rafa and Meri decided to build new. It's such a spectacular plot of land, it deserves a fabulous house. :)

No it won’t.
It’s an old property and been like this since long time.

I’m just paraphrasing Rafa’s comment. He and Wertheim were standing where the kids exit the water after they dive. Years ago, he said he was one of them himself.
Your first post about it was as if it was something bad or negative, when it wasn’t. It’s been a private property since very long time. And Rafa doesn’t stop them from being there even though it’s his property.

No negative connotation; The Nadal will either continue to allow the divers to cross his ground or not. Maybe he’ll get back into diving with them after retirement, no?

He has been diving and jumping from cliffs, spent lots of time in the water during his whole career.

Here is a bit. I love how comfortable he is with himself and his career. I think Federer is the same. Which is still amazing for the sport and demonstrates the best of tennis and sportsmanship.

Love the depth of his thinking and looking back on things.

It was also a good commercial for Mallorca :D This morning I started looking for charter tours to get there (plane and hotel combo). It’s not so far and easy to find cheap packages. Like 3000 NOK(about 300 dollars) for flight and hotel for a week. Very tempting! Would also be nice to visit his academy.

I visited there a few years back. Wonderful, quiet island. If you do go make sure to visit the underground caves.

Rafa has allowed the "young diving enthusiasts" to cross his property since he bought it (7 years or so ago). I think, he can build stairs outside his property for them.
Currently, the "young diving enthusiasts" are obviously using these stairs (on Rafa's property):

Sensitive? Im just correcting what you are writing, cause I like Rafa! You do the same all the time w football and players you like.
I expected Rafa to lose vs Novak on those courts and I expect him to lose as well in AO vs Novak. I don’t have to “get over” anything! But I guess you would have loved if I was somehow sad Rafa lost, cause you aren’t a nice person and you love when others get sad. Sometimes I do get sad when Rafa loses, but not this time.
Go to the linked vid posted by @ChaelAZ (thanks!) proceeding to about 12:30 to see Nadal and Wertheim say exactly what I paraphrased.

You need to correct yourself and maybe apologize while you’re at it.

I also notice the red herring comment about football players. Why weren’t you “correcting” me then?

I wouldn't hold your breath on either one of those things happening.

Nadal v Djokovic is the true great rivalry although it will never get the adulation of Nadal v federer even though Federer v djokovic was better than Fedal
The Nadal on clay is unrivaled, no?

Nadalovic and now Fedal on non-clay are not rivalries. The two righthanders have taken turns being the hammer since January 2014 while The Nadal has been happy getting nailed for those six long years. I believe there are about 18 or so nails in the non-clay coffin.

I have nothing to apologise;)

Which is not true. It will not disrupt the path for young diving enthusiasts as Rafa let them do it!

About football. It’s no use to correct you as you get so insanely nasty and angry! I rather spare myself from your way of expressing yourself at times cause it’s bad energy. We just like different things and vibes and that’s ok! So better to just keep things apart:giggle:
