I am very disappointed that I will not be able to compete this year in Abu Dhabi. I was really excited about returning to play and I always have a wonderful experience at the event and this is the first time I will miss the tournament.

My rehab has gone well, my knee feels good and I was looking forward to competing. Unfortunately doctors have informed me that my body needs to rest in order to fight this stomach virus. I would like to say sorry to all my fans in the United Arab Emirates and around the world, but I hope to play and win in Abu Dhabi again next year.

Sad indeed!!!!!:(

Crazy how he's going to win AO without any preparation at all.

Nadal already said he's aiming to be in form by the clay season (or I think he mentioned Indian Wells). So he isn't thinking about winning the AO. In 2012 before the AO he also said he wasn't thinking about winning the AO, because he had just begun playing with a heavier racquet and he said he'd need all of February to train with it before ready.

I'm so bummed out about this :(

I was looking forward to his return. I know it's probably better for him and his knees in the long run, but goddammit this is disappointing.

if it really is a virus then maybe not. if its his knees then i would be worried.

I dunno. I just get the sense that.. how can he not be prepped by now? What more could he possibly do? We'll have a really definitive answer in a few weeks time.. but I just.. I kinda get the sense he wont be around till April... and only through June.

None of these "medical announcements" should come as surprise. His legs will continue to be problematic, and we'll continue to hear bogus announcements -- "I would love to play in front of all my fans in Monte Carlo but I completely forgot about my accountant's son's bar mitzvah....."

I know Rafa says he doesn't care about ranking, but perhaps he should show it by withdrawing from everything until clay starts (and just practice on clay until then, so he has SOME experience).

It's not worth playing AO and risking knee injuries again on hard courts if he has no chance of winning

He said this week he doesn't expect his knee to be 100% until March........so expect lots last min pullouts and maybe some surprising losses for the 1st QTR of the year from him until clay.

He should dump the whole early hardcourt season anyway and save the knees until the soft stuff in March.

I agree, he should dump the early hardcourt season. I think realistically it would be better if he started playing in March or play only clay for a while, but as a fan it is still sad news.

If he depends only upon clay season, then i say he is pretty much done!!! Atleast he has got millions ;) saying that i was looking forward for his exhibition match against murraa.

Bad paella, stage fright or la rodilla es muy infirma???

None of the above...he just found out they didn't add a wheelchair division!

Sad to see he is not competing. I think his chances of an AO win are severely reduced now, unless he gets in essential matches in before the event.

There is something else going on here. No way Nadal pulls out of Abu Dhabi with a million dollar appearance fee on the line for a stomach virus.

What news to get on Christmas day... and the wait goes on..

Yeah :(
I was looking forward to seeing him. A stomach virus now?, bad things really do come all together... I guess it could be the knee and he's just saying this, but he sounded so sure about playing just a few says ago, I don't see what could have changed.

I'm sure Rafa does care about the ranking.

I agree it's probably not worth it now to play Doha and AO. He's said his knee isn't quite right yet.

Not if he's as money hungry as you think he is. But maybe he isn't.

Though it is odd to withdraw with a stomach virus two days before. Wouldn't one hoe to be better by then?.

yeah. if it was me, I would show up, do my best, lose the match and collect 1 million Dollars. But I am not Nadal :-)

I do think he would show up for the money if all he had was a stomach virus. Nadal(stupidly)played sicker than a dog in Doha in 2011, and I am certain the appearance fee he got for playing there had a whole lot to do with it.

I think his knee is still bothering him quite a bit and he used this as an excuse to get out of playing there. If Nadal were anywhere near ready to play he would have played Abu Dhabi. That appearance fee is far too large not to.

You forgot one thing. He promoted this event and there are some serious number of people out there who bought tickets to watch him play, now they have to watch other players and matches.I wont be surprised ıf he took some serious money out of this.

Too bad for Rafa that he's stuck with the stomach flu during christmas time, it's an awful virus and I totally understand why he withdrew, the disease really KO's you. He had the same virus during Aus 2011 and when he got that beating from Federer at WTF 2011 which is always at the time when there's a stomach flu outbreak. I hope he can recover soon enough to get a few matches in before Australia.

Nadal when healthy - UNDEFEATED!!!

....

I have that one, really bad feeling now.

Was Rosol Nadal's last match ever? I have that bad feeling.

Why do you have a bad feeling? LOL You can't stand the guy and now you have a bad feeling. Mate the only bad feeling you should have is if Fed has to play against him at the majors this year because he will lose to Rafa again as usual :)

He sounded very sure just a few days ago that he was going to play and decide if to play Doha/AO based on how he felt. Hard to think his knee could have gotten worse...

He isn't going to play the event, he's surely not getting paid.

And you are another sheepy nadal fan. When you name is Nadal or Fed you can take money from just promoting the stuff. This is business and this pull out is well planned .

I think that bad feeling is actually hope. I can sense the unbridled glee some of these ****s are feeling right now through the computer screen. Lol.

The money isn't going to be there forever either. Nadal's cashing in as much as he can before his name is worthless. No fans support losers.

 Federer's got other problems right now including Djokovic and Berdych.

Murray can kick his butt too, now. This is Fishy. Why doesn't Rafeal just fly to Australia early and see how his body feels. If he is serious at all about Aussie open then he would get there early and get used to the conditions.

 at the bolded part.
Seriously, it is difficult to believe that he would actually withdraw due to a stomach virus. I mean, does it really last that long ? Would he have withdrawn from a slam or any other regular ATP event citing the same reason ?

Considering that a lot of money is at stake, this makes the most sense. It is possible that he had some kind of agreement with the tournament organizers whereby they paid him to use his name in their promotions even if he was not guaranteed to play. Not saying he willingly lied about planning to take part in the exho earlier, but the organizers may have left him with the option of announcing his withdrawal if he didn't want to play depending on how things panned out.

Laughing my a** off. See what I told you guys? Next time it will be mono for AO.

Joking aside, isn't this really getting fishy? I mean it's a bit too much now isn't it?

I wonder who's gonna replace Nadal now? My guess will be on Tsonga, or maybe someone in the top 20 who's free.
