Rafa says Roger is favourite

:D :D

I have to say that this was a blunder by Team Federer, to have him come out wearing this. It's quite hilarious now though!

more like team nike.

too badd he won the title ;)

Rafa says Roger is favourite

So what's new? Nadal always says that Roger is the favorite, before he goes ballistic on Roger's backhand and defeats him 2/3 rds of the time.

It's Nadal being Nadal as usual; it is in his nature to deflect the burden of expectation from himself. Tell me something I haven't heard before.

expect to see rafa hitting 99% of his shots to the backhand.

Yep. If Rogi can keep driving them for winners, he'll win. Otherwise it'll be Rafa.

People forget that Fed's backhand has improved considerably since 2009. So if conditions are fast and Rafa's backhands don't bounce way up high, it'll be the Maestro.

Either way, the match is on his racket.

LOOOOL! Probably the worst moment as a Fed fan, he looked like an idiot in that outfit and golden manbag.

Nadal is a humble family man. Federer wore that fashion disaster of a white suit and trousers that put the 1996 FA Cup final Liverpool Spice Boys to shame ;)

Touche Mustard :)

To be fair, Federer is pretty well off with sponsorships and nice clothes too.

But people complain Federer has so many fans on here, so yes he must be the people's champion.

Of course, I was just BSing around.

Aside from Fed presumably having most fans here (gloryhunters all of course, even though Fed didn't win a slam for 2 years) didn't he also win most fan favourite awards?

If they would just close the roof..

Fed is a much better indoor player and every Nadal forehand would hit the roof and lose the point.

Where does Nadal say or suggest he doesn't have to play as well as the third and fourth sets against Berdych in order to beat Federer?

Did you just make that up? :)

I was wondering the same.

I didn't make anything up - if you click on the link you'll see it's a straight lift of the article on tennis.com - none of the words are mine.

So it's like the "Nadal is going to take off February to recover from an injury" story. Journalist's imagination.

To all these guys complaining here - what exactly do you want him to say!?

According to the poll, far more people on this board see Federer as the favorite. All the bookies have him as the favorite, too. An evaluation of their recent performance also favors Federer.
But oh no, when Rafa says it, then it's fake?

What if he'd call himself the favorite? - then I guess you would call him delusional :)

I remember Nadal saying some journeyman he was playing in the first round of a clay tournament a few years ago was the favourite! It was a big deal on these forums.

It's gotten to the point where I'll believe Federer to be the favourite when Nadal doesn't say Federer is the favourite.

what answer will he give in the case he loses?
cause injury?

always the same with this guy

Lol...Rafa likes to see himself as the underdog in whichever match he plays! That seems to be the only way he can motivate himself.

I've lost count of the number of times he says that in order to beat whatever opponent he is facing, he will need to play well in order to have a chance!

You would think he was still no 98 in the world and not no 2 with 10 Slams and 36 other titles to his name! :)

What do I want him to say? maybe "it's hard to pick a winner" but not Federer is the favourite, when you've won the last 4 slam meetings, including hardcourt and beaten him 17 times to 9.

Also bookies can be wrong. Murray was favourite one year! ;)

Very unlike Nadal to say that he is not the favorite against Federer...;-)

What was the H2H in slams between them again? And can someone let Nadal know that, he seems to have a memory of a goldfish. :)

Goldfish died in 2009, thats why he skipped Wimby.

You think I am going to comb through the internet to find this for you? This happened years ago, find it yourself if you can.

No, I wouldn't expect you to. It'd be a waste of time since he most likely didn't say that. I just thought I'd point out the lack of evidence, since some here are a little prone to be... imaginative about what Rafa has said/done.

Q. The last eight times you've played Roger in a Grand Slam final you've won six of those. Does that fill you with confidence going into the next match?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. I prefer that, but, no, every match is different, and I know I will be on court playing against probably the best of the history, playing well him.

So obviously my only way and my only chance to win is play aggressive, play very well, and to play to a limit. That's what I gonna try.

Q. Still Rafa, to play best of five seems an advantage for you, to be honest. I mean, you won the last four times you've played against him, best‑of‑five sets, and he's 30 years old. Okay, great class, great talent, we know it. But physically normally you're stronger, or no?

RAFAEL NADAL: If happens the same than in the Masters Cup three months ago the physical performance doesn't affect. (Laughter.) Hopefully will never repeat.

If the match stays strong and the physical performance affects on the result, hopefully that's gonna be a little bit advantage for me or not, because he's very fit.

He never had the physical problems. No injuries, no problems. Very good, you know.

That "Roger is the favourite, no?" thing has gotten to the stage he just makes me sick.

I like Nadal but I don't expect him to be the favorite on Thursday. I think Fed is playing better than he is. Hard courts just aren't his thing. This is coming from a Nadal fan

Nadal will always say Fed is the favourite, Fed could have played a 5 setter every round prior to reaching Nadal and he would still say it.

Oh I have, I put money on Nadal winning the tournament before the start and have betted on Nadal winning this SF match(at a different bookie).

I couldn't resist with the great values they gave me on Nadal even though the reasoning behind them was stupid.

People underrated Nadal's chances at this year's AO because he had a crappy indoor season while the fact is how Nadal does post USO has no bearing whatsoever on how he does at AO(and that season in general).

And they favour Fed over Nadal because Fed was more convincing this tourney so far while the thing is current form was never a crucial factor in Fedal meetings, the match-up was.

The betting markets are the most reliable and best predictor of sports outcomes. If you think you know better, place a bet.

Well I did(as I said in that post). I disagree that betting markets are the most reliable predictor of sports outcomes, especially when it comes to top player rivalries in tennis. Remember Agassi was a bookies favourite before every meeting with Sampras at USO yet he lost all of them.

Do I think Fed has a decent shot? Yes and I really hope he wins(money be damned) but there's no way he should be favoured in this one, not at this stage of his career.

LOL.....if the next time they play here...and Nadal says Federer is Favourite. Then he such a fake and a coward.

Like I'm the first to say this.

who's delusional then?

I know you're not the first. That's why I said delusional fanS.

Fact is, he never takes MTOs when haters here say he will. He didn't in any of the loses against Novak (well, I didn't see the ones on clay), he didn't after the first set now against Fed. If these fans were at all right, he would have taken MTOs then. For example, after going two sets down to Novak in both Wimbledon and the USO.

Lol he said that? Guy is hilarious.

Nah, I don't think he did. Unless it was around 2005 or something. He always says he will have to play his best, but he doesn't call journeymen favourites.

Ok, so Rafa is fake, coward, plays mind games , is falsely modest etc etc ...
But what do you make of all pundits like Darren Cahill , P.Mac, Pete Bodo etc etc who picked Fed over Rafa for this match. Any thoughts?

The reason is simple: wishful thinking. I'm pretty sure that if their lives had depended on it, they would've bet on Nadal.

So wishful thinking. Just like the people on this board who voted for Fed to win. Why not think then that the same could be the case for Rafa?. Wishful thinking that Fed is the favourite. He prefers it that way, after all.

It depends on your angle. Rafa's head to head vs Fed is excellent but Rafa is not a better hard court player than Fed and they had only played 1 slam match on hard before the AO semi. Fed has won 9 slams on hard court, Rafa 2. From that perspective, Fed should be the favorite indeed.

I liked the Nadal post-match interview with Courier. After beating the lower player for the 100th time, he still sticks to the routine about how Fred is greatest and Laver is too. Nadal had trouble keeping a straight face though when he was saying all that...

Just to clarify, I have no issues with what Rafa said nor expert picks, but its just funny to see folks pile on him , when what he said was in line with the experts and the oddsmakers.

Rafa likes to downplay his chances, Fed likes to talk them up.

Prior to today's match, Rafa said Roger is the favourite.
Fed said he is ready for Rafa and he feels that this is the right time for him to play Rafa.

If Rafa is fake modest, then Fed is delusional. Neither is true.
People are different , either attitude is fine, whatever helps each to go into the match with a comfortable mindset and deal with the result, whatever it may be.

And with bookies' odds, people's beliefs and confidence are as influential as anything. If Nadal plays down his chances, there's a greater chance other people won't view his chances as good, and this will be reflected in longer bookies' odds.

Exactly.

I don`t know how after all this time (a lot of) people don't seem to get that.
