Rafa so close to World No.1

If Rafa is to regain the World No.1 rank, it would be after more than 2 years now. Plus he's only 120 points behind Djokovic. Will he be able to achieve the feat?

Djokovic will also get 102 weeks at #1 (the same number as Nadal) before Nadal gets it, when he gains points during the China Open. So as soon as Djokovic catches Nadal, Nadal pulls away again.

Looking at the points Nadal is defending in 2014 he is going to lose it next year anyway so why bother?

Nadal has been destined to be no 2 his entire life, first behind Federer and since 2011 behind Djokovic, a few transitional months when Fed was in decline and Djokovic reaching his peak won't change that.

Yeah he has to defend his Doha, AO, Miami, Halle & WIM points. What's that 10pts out of a possible 5500?

LOL at Doha and Halle. LIKE HE HAS 10.000 POINTS TO GAIN THERE, LOL.

1) He's not defending like 1500 points he gained at the SA Challenger circiut, unless he gets "injured" again and starts off in the Futures circuit.

2) He could gain another 20 points at Wimbledon if he reaches the 2nd round before losing in straight sets (including a bagel) to Somdev Devvarman.

3) Looking at the reduced schedule he's probably gonna miss one of the Masters again, why not Miami again?

So we're left with AO and that's the only tournament where he can gain points. Other than that, he's defending 1000-2000 points everywhere. Good luck with that.

Djokovic on the other hand has done great in Slams but very mediocre in the Masters, he can easily gain points in IW, Miami, Rome, Madrid, Canada and Cincinnati. I'm actually surprised he hasn't made a single final in the Masters other than (ironically) Monte Carlo.

Nadal transitional champ for Djokovic, you're a clown. More than twice as many slams who gives a rats arse whether Djokovic has held the no.1 more.

Well Nadal only shows up when he's in form, the rest of the tournaments he sits out. You can't be no 1 for an extended time if you miss that many tournamets.

You could say that about any number 1. They always have the most points to defend, and, thus, the most to lose.

Except in Nadal's case he has no points at two freaking majors! So there's a lot to make up there even if he scales back a bit at the Masters events.

I know you're incapable of writing more than 5 sentences in 1 post so go for cheap shots, bro.

Besides - Nadal also had points to gain at Wimbledon this year and what happened?

Turns out he didn't need them because he won Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open

If Rafa makes a deep run at the slams and win at least one it won't make a real difference, since he has 4000 points to gain at Wimbly and AO. Plus, while he may not do so well on masters again, he always pull out some good runs too. He will have his shot at staying #1 next year. Chill out, no need to panic, kid :)

everything's going to be alright, tennispro...

Your boy has 6 slams and is like 26. (perhaps worrisome, though, is that there are two players now that can apparently take 'em down in slams and his 2.0 mode is apparently a thing of the past.)

Good idea. I think I will do the same. Another buttheart Federer and Djokovic **** of the worst kind.

And he wouldn't root for Cvac in the slightest, and would probably hate his guts too if he didn't beat Nadal all those times in a row, stopping Nadal from getting closer to Fed's slam count. It seems most of Cvac's fans are just bandwagoning Fed fanatics. Take a look at Ruan's Fed blog to see even more of this pathetic behavior. That place is full of the biggest Fed sycophants known to mankind.

Just to let everyone know, the only reason Nadal is no no 1 right now is that his Vina del mar points don't count. Over the last 52 weeks he HAS earned more points than Djoker.

Once Bejing ends, Nadal will be no 1 so long as he plays the tourney

I gotta ask:

What is the longest gap/break for somebody to regain the #1 spot? And who is this player?

If Rafa does take the #1 back by year end, I hope Djoker is right behind him. That would make AO extremely interesting as the winner (assuming that's a two men race) will take the #1 spot and the first major.

With Wimbledon and the AO to play for, how can Nadal not have the number one spot locked up next year? He could theoretically not defend half of his titles and still come out on top. Djokovic is the only other player competing for the number one spot, honestly, and he looks whipped.

Not really.

Even if Nadal lost in the 1st round at the AO, he would gain points relative to Novak.

basically if novak doesnt defend the AO, he wont have a shot at the no 1 rank for a VERY long time

I know that Connors had a 3 year wait from 1979 to 1982. There may have been others with a longer gap. Oh, what about Agassi from 1995 to 1999 ?

Yep, I read Rafa mention it in a Marca interview. Seems very unfair, he should be n° 1 right now.

Agreed. But thankfully, Nadal can go on a shopping spree, gaining points at (potentially) China Open, Shanghai, Basel, Paris, WTF, Doha, Australian Open, and Miami. And if Nadal goes deep in Wimbledon 2014, it'll make up for any points he may not defend in the first half of 2014 (he may not play Acapulco/Brasil Open/Vina del Mar next year). Then Nadal will really have a stranglehold on the #1 ranking. I can easily see 200+ weeks at #1 as an achievable goal for Nadal, possibly 300+.

Woah there. There are only 52 weeks in a year. Nothing happening this year is going to affect rankings in 2015 and beyond. Remember Nadal is on 102 weeks, and he hasn't taken back number 1 yet. Therefore if he is number 1 for every week in 2014 - the most he can get to that year is around 165 weeks. Beyond 2014 everything is reset again.

Now if you are meaning Nadals ultimate limit...i do think he can get over 200 weeks. But beyond 165 weeks, it is just guess work.

How many weeks until Beijing (weeks when he should be n° 1 and yet he isn't...)?.

Didn't a somewhat similar thing happen in 2008, where he also had to wait even though he had earned the points?.
