Rafa vs. Djoker: Someone explain what the deal is?

With there being a tight race between these two as we finish the season, there is much to still be played for. YE1, WTF, 2 masters, and number 1. Yet, it is hard to figure out how this could play out as I am still confused as to who is playing what.

Can someone tell me if Djoker is healthy and playing at Tokyo? It says he is. What else will he play? WTF, Shanghai, and Paris?

What about Rafa? Is his hand going to be fine for him to play Shanghai? I know he is not scheduled to play anything till then.

Not sure how bad Rafa wants the YE1 and number one spot, but depending on what Djoker does, he might need to add another tourney. Same with Djoker.

Or will this simply be a who wins the WTF finish?

So confused at what they are STILL planning to play with their cryptic injuries.

I'm afraid we still don't know what is with them.

Djokovic does want to play Tokyo and Shanghai but he has to see how his rehabilitation goes first.

I think Nadal was already in doubt for Shanghai due to the wedding but I am not sure. My guess is he will skip it.

If that's the case and Djokovic is good to go for the Asian swing, he can make the race tight and set up a grand finale at Bercy and WTF. But we are all still just speculating...

Rafa can simply get married on the court in Shanghai after an early round.

Rafa limped through the Goffin match at 2017 World Tour Finals just to secure #1.
Rafa does whatever it takes :)
#1 is never Rafa's goal at the start of the year, but when its within reach, he seals it.
Unlike Novak who actually allowed Murray to win the WTF finale 2016 and take the no1 spot undeservedly.

I honestly think Nadal could take the rest of the year off and be happy to do some personal life things while enjoying the rest. Especially if Djo is out.

The YE #1 would be cool, but I don’t think missing it will matter.

Nadal will be MONUMENTALLY STUPID if he chases Year end #1.
IF he does that, he will be slamless for the next year. And spend half of it injured.
His body is already breaking down. He could barely function after the UsOpen final. His coach helped him to even put on jeans.
Nadal has to be very very selective with his matches. His expiration date is overdue.

Wouldn't surprise me either. I think he does one more masters and perhaps his season is over. Really, he's probably the only one that knows one way or the other, though.

Djokovic tweeted his shoulder is worse than thought. Rafa i doubt plays again this season bar WTF.

No, he secured it already in Paris by beating Pablo Cuevas in the 3rd round (he had his knee taped mid-match). WTF does not award any points for participation, only for matches won.

Rafa moved with absolutely no problem in his 2 matches at the Laver Cup, quite the opposite of your post :)
Rafa will never have an expiration date, he simply takes breaks when he's injured, and returns.
He'll be doing this for as long as he's a slam contender, because he said he'll only retire if he can't fight for the big titles.
He has about 4 or 5 years left.

Undeservedly? I wouldn’t be so rough to Murray. We can call undeserved a situation where YE#2 won 2 Slams and YE#1 none, but not when it’s 2 Slams against 1 Slam and OG. Djokovic collapsed after RG so Murray was simply the better player through the year.
The guy with more slams should always be no 1. Anything else seems very dubious. Especially since Djkovic had a H2H 2-0 in slams that year.

I wonder, why you, Djoko fan, are always sooo concerned about Rafa.

When he played hurt at the end of 2017 it didn't seem to bother him in April-June of 2018.

Rafa is the strong fav to finish number one tbh. Nole pretty much needs to go perfect the rest of the year with a bum shoulder, while Rafa has nothing to defend and any match he wins will move him closer to passing Novak in the rankings

Both men seem to be doing whatever they can *not* to finish the year as No 1.

Bizarre situation.
I think they both might only be looking ahead to AO2020. They know that the race to YE1 could do further damage to their aging bodies. They need more time these days to recover. Putting extensive physical stress on achieving YE1 could mess them up for the next season. WTF isn't all that important in the scheme of things with the Slam Race going on. The Big 3 should only be looking ahead at AO2020 and gearing up for that. Just my opinion.

Nadal has said he would play a full season many times after the USO and didn't play one event. Factor that into your answer.
Well Nadal wants to play but he gets injured. Not to mention his game sucks on low bouncing indoor courts. That's his weakest surface by far.
Hard to blame him if he skips this part.

Can the big three drama queens just retire already. Always whining about something, all the money has made them fat and lazy

For Rafa the WTF matter slightly more, as winning that would be big for him even if he scoffs at the idea. So if I was him I would forget about everything else and play WTF's and just have a go there.

Maybe Paris to warm-up, if his new wife let's him.

Sadly, I agree with this post.

Rafa is nearing the end of his slam winning days, every year from now on is a huge guess. The decline has been painfully noticeable from 2017 to now. He needs to be like Djoker and try his absolute best to peak for the slams.

How is he nearing the end? He just won 2 slams and reached the Final and SF of the other. He is the second favorite at AO, will win FO, 3rd favorite at USO, and favorite at USO.

He could easily win 2, maybe 3 slams next year.

I have no new info, but... there's an eveeeel plot afoot. A plot to crown Lord Fedr as YE#1. :happydevil:

Haha, well, if Djoker and Rafa are done for the year (not buying it for one second), then it is Feds to lose.

I honestly think Rafa and Djoker are keeping an eye on the other to see what the bare minimum is that they need to do.

I wonder how much side-eyeing is actually going on. These guys talk like they don't care, but I wonder how much of that is diplomacy.

A lot. They care, Rafa would kill to have a WTF to have at least one to his name, and Djoker would love to keep racking up the weeks at number one and catch Rafa on some masters.

Very plausible.

But jokes aside, it was big that Fedr won LC19. That should take him out of his post WB19 lull. He has almost no chance to overtake Nadl, but it is still possible (I don't think he will). But YE#2 is a real possibility with a mentally refreshed Fedr if Djokr is not 100%. And if Fedr makes it close enough to YE#1, he'll likely retake #1 next year after the AO20. This YE#1 race definitely has intrigue. ;)

Well, I don't know about all of that, but it is a possibility I guess. Unfortunately, I think us Fed fans are now at the point where just staying in the top 3 is good enough as long as he has his chances in slams.
