Delpo Is playing really well again and crushing forehands. It really depends on how Rafa plays more than anything. He'll have to up his level.

I'm hope set 2&3 Rafa shows up. :) His serve was working, FH was working and BH was working. Ya, lol. That Rafa would be nice.

I think Del Potro at his best is the real nightmare matchup for Nadal. He is the perfect height for Nadal's topspin shots, and he is unique amongst the ballbashers in that he doesn't make lots of UE.

Of course, he's not at his best now but should still have a pretty good chance!

Del Potro in 3 sets only if he manages to raise his first serve percentage ( at least 60% and not 47% )

it's the key for the win,

I assume Del Potro will be healthy but I may be wrong

Delpo has been on it pretty well so far, he's still not totally back but he has a great shot at nadal... Nadal will win if he comes out hot as he's still the best in the world but anything less then that he will lose badly

Did you guys see Delpo's last match against Kohlschreiber? He barely eked out a win. Rafa will win in two no problem. This time he's healthy. The last couple of times they played he wasn't. Rafa is #1 in the world for good reason - he's the best.

Yes I've been waiting for this! Appetising! Yes delpo is a nightmare matchup but I believe if rafa is at his best he can beat anyone. He has to find ways to play his game otherwise delpo will boss him and make him look amateur. Argh I hate when rafa loses like that. 98% of the time when rafa loses its in a devastating way.
Rafa in 2. I believe in you hombre. Popcorn ready :)

Nadal in 3 here, too (possibly 2). This is Rafa's chance to remind Delpo that the USO win two years ago was at the expense of an injured warrior. :)

I think the Karlovic match may have woken up Nadal a bit. For these top players, sometimes it helps to face that kind of pressure in a previous round. I've been impressed with Del Potro's return, but I'll take Nadal in two close sets in the SF.

Del Potro won in straights. It was Nadal who barely eked out a win.

DelPo's has come back quicker than I expected, but I still don't think he's in top form, so I'm voting for Nadal.

And, even though I like DelPo better and would usually root for him, I actually want Nadal to win, because suddenly Fed-Nadal finals are becoming increasingly hard to come by and I'd like to see a few more before it's too late. Of course, this would mean Fed beats Djokovic, which I don't see happening.

well you can't say that. remember that DP was nearly a year away from the tour. some even thought he wouldn't come back since he was rumored not only to have a wrist injury but also depressions.

DPs form curve is going up steep, but still that match doesn't say much about the USO match 2 years ago.

It will all depend on one of my favorite players, Del Potro. We know what Ralph is going to do, and he'd have done his homework after losing consecutively the last 3 times they've met. If Del Potro can stay head strong, and assuming his fitness is up to it, he can make the match last 3 and possibly win. This is the very game he's looking for to get him back on track in terms of match play.

Who knows. This match is an an enigma wrapped in a mystery, anything could happen based on their recent forms.

Rafa wins. OR. Rafa was tired because of his QF match.

You're the only one saying this nonsense. Rafa was pumped up, jumping all over after his win over Karlovic. He's also got a day to rest, now. Fatigue obviously won't be a factor.

Unless he suffers an injury during his match, like in Australia, he's fine.

Delpo isn't playing nearly as well as he is capable of thus I expect Ralph to win in 2 sets. I'd be surprised if it even went to 3 sets.

This is a very similar situation to the Cilic encounter at AO. Just because Cilic had destroyed Nadal at a time when Nadal had the lowest confidence and played the worst tennis of his life, not even mentioning stomach tear that affected his serve drastically, people are assuming he's set to wipe Rafa out of the court every time they play. For people who need to refresh their memory, 2009 is the year when Nadal didn't win a set in WTF.
So, the Delpo match could end up very similar to the Cilic one at AO. Surprise, surprise.
Surface matters too. Last time they met at IW, Nadal won easily.

It was amusing watching Rafa wipe the floor with Cilic at the AO

When Ralph loses today, what's the excuse gonna be? Injured warrior again?

Nadal actually played a GREAT match against Cilic at the AO. He had very high intensity throughout that match, and somehow, for that one match alone, was almost very close to his UsOpen level.

The thing is that Delpo has cojones twice the size of Cilic. So it's almost certain that Delpo won't get broken multiple times, choke on serve and lose easy sets like Cilic did. I think Delpo is one of the most mentally strong players on tour matched only by prime Fed/Nadal. I'm pretty sure that barring injury, Delpo will be the single biggest rival for Nadal (more than folks like Djokovic/Murray etc) in the longer term.

I sense that this match is more important for Nadal than it is for Del Potro. Clearly Delpo is not 100%. So one would expect that Nadal should get this one easily, for if he cannot beat a sub-par Delpo on a (relatively) slower surface, what hope is there in the next year or so when Delpo will surely get much better and fitter? Obviously if Delpo loses, he can say he's on the way back. If he wins, it's all gravy. So it's kindof a win win for the big Argie.

Overall, It could be a very close match if Nadal plays the way he has in the tournament and Delpo might even eek out a win.

However I don't expect Nadal to play the sub-par tennis he's played so far. I would expect Nadal to come pumped up (as he was in the Cilic match at AO) and play somewhere close to his best tennis.

Overall scoreline prediction: Nadal wins in straights: one very close set (7-5 or 7-6) and the other like 6-4/6-3.
