Rafael Nadal eyes Monte Carlo as 1st event since Aussie Open

MONACO -- Rafael Nadal is aiming to make his comeback from a hip injury at the clay-court Monte Carlo Masters next month, organizers said Wednesday.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion has been sidelined with a left hip flexor injury since the Australian Open and pulled out of hard-court tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami.

The Monte Carlo Masters begins April 8, and tournament director David Massey is optimistic that Nadal will play.

"Rafa was the first [player] to be registered," Massey said in a statement. "He really wants to play at the Monte Carlo Masters and is giving himself every chance to take part in the tournament he's so fond of."

Nadal, 36, has won the tournament a record 11 times, including an Open era record streak of eight consecutive titles from 2005 to 2012.

He uses the event as a key part of his preparations for the French Open, which takes place May 28 to June 11.

Nadal has won 14 of his major titles on clay at Roland Garros, including last year while dealing with chronic pain in his left foot.

In January, Nadal hurt his hip flexor during a second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald at the Australian Open.

An MRI the next day revealed the extent of the injury.

wait...I thought it was a muscle tear?
Now it is the hip?
Is it both, neither...?
It has always been the same. I keep wondering why Rafa bashers are keen to demonstrate a low knowledge (or attempting cheat readers).

I'm not sure why this needed announcing, we all knew he would be back for the start of the clay season.
As soon as the injury was announced, this was the obvious outcome. From January 18th:

How many times do you people have to fall for this?

He spends more time injured off clay than any player in history, only for him to magically be healed when he has to play on the most physically demanding surface.

Considering me missed half the CC season last year this is actually really good news. He’s going to need all the match play he can get. He’s probably not remotely close to being ready to play BO5 right now.
It’s ideal early clay prep for him. By the time RG rolls around he will go through the gears.

After watching Carlos play live last week I have to think he's a legit contender. He's fit enough and great enough to do it. Nadal is still the overwhelming favorite with Novak a strong second, but Alcaraz is scary good. And fit enough to go the distance.
Yeah the same way I see it too. All 3 have a solid chance but Nadal obviously still a big favourite over the other 2. I don’t see anyone else with a chance of winning it.

After he became Z's only top 10 win in a slam, it's better to be cautious with Carlos.

Rafa gave everyone (on Twitter) clear information on January 19 that it will take 6-8 weeks to heal from his injury. Armchair doctors' predictions are meaningless.

Clay is softer than HC and more forgiving on a player's body (joints, tendons, ligaments.) I wonder why Rafa bahers don't want to accept the reality.

Rafa will always target the clay for any possible return to the tour. If he can't get fit enough for the clay then you know things are really serious.
