Rafael Nadal eyes return to competitive tennis at Monte Carlo

This looks damn creepy. Where is it from?

nah I got Raz for the FO and Nadal for Wimby
It’s a toss up between the two Spaniards and Djoko for RG

Djoko actually is better positioned than he was in either 2021 or 22… there seems to be a concerted effort to generate pace, what with his new bulked up physique and added power. He will be more ready than last year as well.

But it’ll likely be a Spaniard who wins

As for Wimby. Jury’s out until I can see Nadal actually play on grass. It’ll be Djoko barring a Nadal miracle.

20 years we are watching the same movie, and still some of the Nadal fans are acting surprised at some parts of the script.
Somehow, last year life wrote a different script and Rafa started the clay season from Madrid (so it wasn't the same for the past 20 years, right?)

This year, he was also very cautious when giving interviews expressing tentativeness regarding his return to the tour.

This French Open is very crucial for Nadal, if he loses before SF here then he is done and dusted permanently.

Alcaraz might win this slam, possibilities are high.

I’m surprised bots have time to be getting out of shape over Rafa and Clay. Shouldn’t they be basking in the glory of their mans recent wins?
Perhaps the sunshine double boycott from their player has bothered them?

Damn, what a stat. All those talks about how Nadal is always pacing himself for the clay season, dedicating 365/7/24 of his time just to be in peak form for the clay part of the season, many times even faking injuries in the other parts of the season if that's serving the cause, yeah those talks seems that are right on the money. A hard cold truth. It's crazy how one tweet can be so god damn telling!?
Rafa bashers have always created false stories about Rafa. The comment I quoted is yet another example.

Really a shame they never went with it again, it looked good and was refreshing.
Ion Tiriac (a Romanian billionaire, the owner of the Madrid Masters in 2012) couldn't continue to use blue clay at the Madrid Masters because Rafa was stronger than Tiriac - Rafa promised not to play the next year unless the tournament would switch back to red clay.

It wasn't only Rafa. Novak also joined in complaints.

I've read your previous post about it. But from what I've heard, the problem wasn't actually the color change, the clay being slippery was because of something else entirely (don't remember the details).

Interesting that this makes bigger news than a top player who complains that IW is, "slower than many clay courts" after that self-described "hard court specialist" plays 15 consecutive HC tournaments and wins 3 in a row. He still was able to defeat Zverev and take the H2H lead 7-6 with all 13 matches played in HC. Zverev never complained he never got Meddy in Clay where he has more success.

As for Madrid both Djokovic and Nadal weren't big fans of the color change. Nonetheless, it wasn't exactly the best clay tournament for either player. Djokovic has much more success in Rome than Madrid while Nadal has won Madrid in Clay only four times compared to RG, Barcelona, MC, and Rome. In fact, he has more success in HC tournaments as Rogers Cup and Mexican Open (played in HC) than Madrid. Of course, as noted in the past the high elevation and return of service on kick serves makes it a very different clay tournament. This helps explain why Federer won Madrid 3 times but could never win Rome or MC (yes, he had MP's and came close).

I thought Nadal starting at Estoril or even Barcelona (low elevation) makes more sense than MC. He needs to start at 250/500 level before trying to get ready for the FO. Moreover, the often-windy conditions of MC aren't exactly the best tournament to start after coming back from injury. I wouldn't be surprised if several players as Alcaraz, Djokovic, Zverev, and Nadal all split titles this clay season.
