Does anyone care that he hasn't? It wasn't a big deal when Sampras played the game and quite frankly it's overhyped now. Nadal's OG is essentially a prestigious hardcourt title, Sampras has 7 hardcourt grand slams.
It seems to make Agassi's resume more impressive.

According to who? An OG is special because of the venue, the Olympics is an event bigger than any one sport, it's an occasion where you get to represent your country etc...For other sports winning the gold shows you're the best in the world at what you do. In tennis we have the ATP rankings and the grand slams to show who's the best. The OG is a fantastic personal and national achievement but that's it.

That's why it's an important part of a tennis player's career. It's not as important as Pete's 14 majors, but it's something that would set him apart from Nadal without question. It's closer because Pete lacks one and Nadal has one.

It's only recently been an important part of a tennis player's career though. So it's irrelevent whether or Sampras has one. Fact of the matter is in terms of difficulty, winning an OG is no harder to win than the 11 masters titles Sampras has. Sampras has 3 slams on Nadal, 5 YEC and close to triple his time as #1. The OG doesn't make it closer. Like I said previously Nadal's OG was won on hardcourt, Sampras has 7 hardcourt Grand Slams.

What makes you say that?

Because it's only recently been something the pro's put much stock in. Atleast in the wider sense. Obviously Agassi was thrilled to win his OG in 1996 but Sampras didn't give a rats ass and neither did a lot of other greats.

Yet the 2000 Olympics was detrimental to Tim Henman when he lost early, yet it wasn't important then?

I said neither did a lot of other greats, is Tim Henman a great? Besides that, the fact of the matter is really that a Grand Slam > Olympic Gold in tennis. Whether it has personal value beyond tennis or not it doesn't change that fact.

A great for English tennis, perhaps.
