Rafael Nadal: "Nobody is eternal. For sure I will lose more matches"

Chanwan

G.O.A.T.
They are not serial winners who only lose when something is not right like Rafa. Even when playing Delpo has only bagged 1 slam and no M1000.

Ah, I see. Rafa without injury can't loose:
"who only lose when something is not right like Rafa"

FYI - Delpo was just 20, when he one his first slam. Fed, McEnroe and numerous others imagined he would have been competing for the world no. 1 in 2010. In Delpo's case, the injuries potentially stopped him from becoming the player he could have been. Alas, we'll never know.

In Rafa's case, you could argue that the injuries have made him stronger and given him some much needed breaks. And you could argue that he wouldn't have won half as much if he didn't pressure his body beyond it's own limits time and again.

How does Rafa know this? Science doesn't know if eternity exists or not.

How arrogant of Rafa thinking he knows more than all the top scientists :).

Was it just me, or did he subtly imply he is the real goat if not injured?

He did imply he would have done quite a bit better and that right now, only one current player has done better than him. See my comments in this thread for more

He could have also done worse too. Not resting can also mean he doesn't have to shorten his career do to injuries. So this can be a double edge sword.

A lot of people get injured too, he is talking like he is the only one and that has it the worst.

Some other guys needed surgery, I don't think Rafa needed surgery yet.

I was just watching a movie the mighty ducks. It was a great point. That coach in the movie missed a goal by half an inch or something, when he was a boy. He had bad memories.

Then one kid made him feel better. He said, yes half an inch to the right and you would hit a goal, but half an inch to the left and you would have missed the goal completely.

This is something to thing about.

I disagree with him missing out on the most opportunities, but otherwise there's nothing wrong with what he said.

Hope he has a good 2014, started a bit worse than last year, but that was to be expected I think. This hardcourt Season post-wimbledon will be very interesting.

Seriously? Which of the slams that he missed do you honestly think he would've won had he not been "injured"?

All of them French Open and Wimbledon in 2004, the AO 2006, Wimbledon 2009, USO 2012 and AO 2013.

;)

Nadal's fangirls love to gift their crush slams.

Yeah, right. Please stop exaggerating. There is no way he wins W 2004.

He only wins others. I don't like how his fans think he would have 22 slams when in reality he would only have 21 slams without injuries.

You can't just gift him 2004 W.

He is the real GOAT barring injury, if there can be a GOAT.

This is like saying that Borg would have been the real GOAT with a "full" career ending past 30, or that Stepanek would have been the real GOAT with Sampras' serve and Federer's ground game.

Meanwhile, in the real world, Nadal is not even the undisputed clay GOAT, so overall GOAT would really be, ahem, "pushing" it quite a lot.

Such a fedaphant. We all Know Federer is Nadal's pigeon and Nadal beat Roddick at Queens in 2008 so he'd clearly be the favorite.

Yup, the 2 clay goats would stop Nadal.

Besides the fact that when Nadal was 17 it is very possible he would've lost Gaudio or Coria, that is not really the point. The point is that since you claimed RG 2004 would be won by Nadal had he entered all I have to do is find reasonable doubt that Nadal would win in the form or Gaudio or Coria and your argument is useless. In fact, reasonable doubt is the 127 other players in the draw had Nadal played. I only said Gaudio or Coria to be nice. That is the point. If you don't enter you can't win.

How about this hypothetical?

Fed skips some majors he lost to Rafa. This means he is rested, so he doesn't lose the other close matches, like W 08, AO 09.

So he would have a leading h2h with Rafa and 20 majors including CYGS. Yeah baby.

Rafa is lucky to skip majors. Otherwise he would burn out and retire with 6 majors. Also he protects his h2h vs rivals that way not at his best. It's easy not to play.

Pigeon? Fed destroyed Rafa in 10 of those wins including 3 bagels.

Interesting, so do you think Federer's peak is so high than he can bagel even a bad match up on his worst surface? He just can't maintain the concentration necessary because like many genius's he has a short attention span.

In all fairness, you forgot quite a few
AO 2010 - defaulted on Murray being down two sets and 0-3 in the third in the quarters. If not for that injury..., well - he would have won the CYGS
AO 2011 - injured vs. Ferrer. If not for that injury, he would have stopped Djoko in the final and 2011 would never have happened.
Wimbledon 2011 - wasn't there a foot injury vs. Delpo that he still felt the effects of even weeks after Wimbledon?
US Open 2011 - see above, loss of training
Wimbledon 2012 - he withdrew from tournament play for seven months after that. Obviously, he wouldn't have been Rosolled, had he not been injured
Wimbledon 2013 - couldn't bend his knees properly and got Darcis'ed as a consequence.

Edit: Forgot the stomach injury at the US Open 2009 - def. win! And even the FO 2009? How could he have lost that match while healthy? Silly me.
thanks claygirl!

If not for injuries at 2 consecutive AO's Nadal would have won the CYGS in 2010 then defended it in 2011. What a GOAT.

^Chanwan, you're one of the decent posters in here. No need to mock Nadal this way.

You know, I know & so does everyone, that Nadal has gotten injured quite a few times in his career and has been forced to withdraw from a couple of slams.
Now I'm not saying that he would have won those, but of course Rafa would feel that he lost some good chances due to injuries.

Of course Delpo is another player who has lost quite a lot of important time in his career due to injury. But I think Rafa means among the Top players, as in Top 4 who have been ruling Tennis world for the last decade.
No one knows if Rafa would have been successful in any of the Slams he missed, but he lost out on significantly important chances during his prime years due to injuries. That can also be attributed to his playing style, of course. But it is what it is.

But I can see where the thread is headed with talk like that. That's not what I posted this interview for.
Anyways, just wanted to chip in. You guys are most welcome to keep going at it :)

It's more a mockery of some of his fans (such as clayqueen) rather than Nadal himself. He would of course had good chances to win some of the slams he missed but certain posters like to assume that he would definitely have won them if he participated.

Agreed! :)

Do people dislike Nadal or his fans?

Sometimes on TW it's either one or the other.

Nadal or his fans because usually they're not the ones who troll anything to do with Andy Murray, that's usually reserved for the Federer fans....that pusher still has a positive H2H.

I'd say it's a bit of both. The majority of his fans seem utterly clueless and devoid of any logic whatsoever in their thinking. But Nadal himself is also a bit like this, and he also employs a lot of gamesmanship to gain an edge. I suppose like attracts like in this case.

I'm just having fun - at least to a degree. And NatF is completely right.
And I agree with pretty much all of what you've said here though I don't think he meant top-4.
He's had a lot of smaller injuries and a few bigger. They've prevented him from competing for certain titles, but they've also given him some much needed rest. No one knows if he would have pulled a Borg by now had he not had injuries.

Btw - I mainly took offensive with him feeling he was the one, who's been worst hit. I think that's quite far from reality as
a) as opposed to a whole lot of other players, he's never had surgery and
b) he's always been able to return to the same level or often even higher post injury. Who else can you say that about? Not Delpo, not Hewitt, not Haas (my three original names)

I personally think his 2012 break was pivotal for his 2013 career year.

AO2011? I take it you didn't watch any of Djokovic's matches during that tournament?

And I take it, you haven't seen my comment above:)
Also, don't forget, Nadal had never lost to Djokovic in a final, let alone slam-final, before at this point in time.
Djoko was lucky to get the slamless Murray instead of the Rafa gunning for the Rafa-slam. Had Rafa been in that final, there would be no need for your username as I wrote above. Djokovic would have been stopped dead in his tracks before his run even began... ;-)

Well without injuries for Rafa let's see:
1)AO 2006- he was too young so i doubt he wins that
2)FO 2009-i give you this one.
3)W 2009-not a given. Roddick and Federer would not have been easy opponents.
4)USO 2009-again, not a given. Who says he beats Delpo in the first place? Or even Federer, who dominated the event for 6 years in a row?
5)AO 2010-50/50. Who says he beats Murray in the first place? He was down 2 sets to love when the injury occured so it is not like he was leading or something
6)AO 2011-he is not beating Djokovic in that kind of form. I actually think Nadal was lucky to avoid 3 slams losses to Djokovic in the same year.
7)W 2012-not a given. Murray and Federer were both playing very well. Even Tsonga was playing well. He never won a slam off clay going through such a draw (Tsonga+Murray+Federer) and also his grass game was already going down by that point. So not a given.

All in all, only RG 2009 would have been a sure thing. The others, not so much

Nadal himself admitted he wasn't that affected in the Soderling match. I think he loses that anyway unless he channels his best clay form.
