Rafael Nadal: 'Novak Djokovic plays almost everything, while Roger Federer and I who have been injured for such a long time

The people talking about Djokovic's diet and fitness regimen in here nailed it. He sacrifices a ton to be at the level he has been. His mind is clear on what his goals are and he believes that is the way for him to reach them, so that's what he does. It's more than just having great genetics, which he clearly has, but maintaining a certain routine to keep himself as healthy as possible. So far, it has worked for him. I'm pretty sure there's a ton of great and fattening food he would love to indulge in but he doesn't, and that deserves a lot of credit.

I think he said something similar a month or two ago.
It makes sense. He is basically saying.....
....weak era.
But humbly, as is his signature.

He also did this for local financial reasons.

All tennis players are $$ Ho's! The best at it is Federer who'll end up being a billionaire with Novak probably only holding the record $$ playing the game way back by $100's of millions! Sharapova's made a fortune off what little tennis she actually played while Serena's desperately trying to catch up with all her actual winning on court! ;) :p:-D

Is that why he did the Adria Tour?
I get the overall impression from Novak that he is very trusting of his inner circle and especially Serbian officials (see Pepe Imaz, and the ridiculous bread doctor story - he trusts these guys a lot) and probably got some assurances that COVID wasn’t a problem before going ahead with the Adria Tour. At the end of the day, it’s not really a tennis player’s responsibility to come up with restrictions around a novel coronavirus. I think it moreso speaks to the ridiculous advisors such as Srdjan Djokovic who amazingly still play a large role in his life.

He of course came off as a dunderhead and was negatively affected by COVID for the French Open 2020, I think. Certainly that hurt him in the match vs. Nadal.

But that being said, one of those guys fell apart physically in each long slam match he played in 2021 and had to take half the year off, and one of those guys won 3 Slams and the YE #1.

Don’t have to defend everything a player does for my overall statement to be true, to be fair.

Novak does deserve more credit for the bananas dedication to his personal health he has. You don’t hear any other pro player with the stretching routine and diet he puts himself through. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that he’s one of the most durable athletes in tennis history.

the “polite” discourse we have around injuries as if they are completely out of the athlete’s control isn’t fully true. Obviously he is far luckier than guys like DelPo, Murray, Nadal, basically the entire New Balls Gen, but it’s not ALL luck. It’s a shame, certainly, that others have struggled with injuries but this is pro sports. The ability to sustain physical condition is part of the job description… we don’t mourn the juniors who had career ending injuries, do we? This is war. And in your 30s, that knowledge of one’s body and dedication to health is 1000% a skill and not luck.

You can’t tell me that injury prevention due to Monk-like asceticism and yogi level stretching isn’t a legitimate competitive advantage he has. With the razor thin margins at the top level, being able to show up prepared physically is almost as important as your shotmaking and serve.

Sometimes the best ability is availability. Truth hurts

I agree it is impressive.
However the king of bananas dedication seems to be Cristiano Ronaldo ... waking up in the middle of the night to take an ice bath bc that is the best time to recuperate ... removing the commercially placed coke bottles in front of him during the euros ... lol, this guy takes health and his body very seriously.
