Rafael Nadal now favourite for Wimbledon with Roger Federer, says Mats Wilander
Mats Wilander believes Rafael Nadal's tenth French Open triumph will send the Spaniard into Wimbledon next month as a favourite for the title alongside Switzerland's Roger Federer. Nadal has won Wimbledon twice but not since 2010.

Rafael Nadal dropped only 35 games en route to the title and getting a 6-2 6-3 6-1 win over Stan Wawrinka in the final.

Rafa Nadal’s 10th French Open triumph will send the Spaniard into Wimbledon next month as a favourite for the title alongside Roger Federer, Mats Wilander told Reuters on Sunday. Nadal returned to his brutal best at Roland Garros this year, dropping only 35 games en route to the title and getting a 6-2 6-3 6-1 win over Stan Wawrinka in the final.

Not only did the victory give Nadal a professional-era record of 10 titles at the same slam it restarted his grand slam collection after three years without a major.

Wilander thinks the 31-year-old Spaniard could now go on a roll.

“Absolutely he is one of the main favourites now for Wimbledon,” three-times French Open champion Wilander, hosting Eurosport’s flagship “Game Set and Mats” programme in Paris, said as he digested Nadal’s return to his Roland Garros throne.

“He has taken confidence away from Wawrinka, from (Andy) Murray, even though he didn’t play him. And Roger Federer is a very happy man that he didn’t come to the French because his confidence has not been dented.

“Nadal has changed his game and he is playing way more aggressive, closer to the baseline, it’s a different Nadal.

“He’ll go to Wimbledon with so much confidence. For me he’s favourite with Federer but Federer won’t have the confidence of coming in as French Open champion.”

Nadal has won Wimbledon twice but not since 2010 when he beat Tomas Berdych. Injury problems to his knees and wrist have stalled his collection of major silverware which now stands at 15 — second on the all-time list behind Federer’s 18.

Wilander believes time away from the court after finishing last year early has helped the Mallorcan to return to his formidable physical peak.

“Tennis players don’t need to hit that many tennis balls but when they have a chance to get in the gym and work on the lower body and core that’s what helps. Nadal’s flying on the court and that gives him that extra confidence.

“I’m not that interested in the numbers…10, 11 or nine. But what this title has done is restart his campaign. He hadn’t won a slam in years. Now he’s going to be thinking going into the next three slams Novak (Djokovic) held all four.

“Rafa could arrive here next year in May with 18.”

Wilander said Nadal’s resurgence since pulling out of the French Open last year with a wrist injury — he also reached the Australian Open final and is back at number two in the rankings — is down to former world number one Carlos Moya joining his team.

“I never agreed with people who said Rafa should stop working with Toni (Nadal), but having his friend Carlos there and Francisco Roig means that they talk to Toni and give some new ideas and then Rafa trusts the plan.

“There has been a clear change since Carlos came in.”

I was going to agree that Nadal seems formidable enough to be considered, although I know that Mats is full of it.

However, when I read about 4 in a row I already knew that he has reverted to his old clownish attitude.

Nadal also went into Wimbledon with confidence after winning RG in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and lost in the 2nd, 1st and 4th rounds respectively. I really don't think this guy ever even listens to the things he says.

He also said Nadal was the best doubles player in the world during commentary of RG this year.

He also said at 2015 RG after Djokovic beat Nadal that he felt like he could go on to be the greatest claycourt player in history. Like wtf are you talking about? He totally jinxed Djokovic at RG that year.

Wilander is so stupid. He changes his opinion after every tournament. Two years ago he was saying that Djokovic is the best clay court player of all time (he must be felt like an idiot when Wawrinka owned Djokovic a few days after that). Now suddenly Nadal is favorite on grass. This guy is a troll. Nobody takes him seriously anyway.

No slight difference. In each of those years he had wars with Djokovic that took a lot out of him.

When he has won the FO with ease he has done well at Wimbledon.

The facts are:

1. Nadal never made the finals at AO, RG, Wimbledon in the same year.
2. Nadal is 31, with bad recent experience at Wimbledon, lacking the serve to help him win cheap points. How many players in their 30's had success in London. Federer and Ivasenivec ...
3. Other players believe that they can beat Nadal. On clay Rafa restored his untouchable aura but on grass his opponents wont come out defeated in their minds.

Offcource Nadal could go to win Wimbledon, he is an ATG .. BUT I think that Murray, Federer, Wawrinka, Zverev are with better chances than him and Tsonga/Raonic not so far behind.

It's amazing people are still saying Zverev will win Wimbledon, even after his performance in Halle final. Let the guy go past the third round in a slam first. Even his brother has reached a 1/4 final once.
I mostly agree on your comment about Nadal (even though I really want it to be wrong) but how do you put Wawrinka as favorite after that? He is older than Nadal, never reached a semifinal in Wimbledon, and just doesn't like grass. Almost every argument you wrote about Nadal is right for Wawrinka as well. The only difference is that he has a strong serve.

The facts as you call them are out of context. 2006,2007,2008 2010 and 2011 more relevant. Those years Rafa did not blow his gasket having to beat Djokovic at the FO similar to this year!!!

LOL, sorry but more recent is more relevant. What he did almost 10 years ago is the least relevant.

I'm not picking Rafa to win, but facts, guys older than Ivanisevic was who won:

Connors
Laver
Laver
Federer
Ashe

Laver, of course, did it two years in a row.

Nadal is the 3rd oldest RG winner in the open era, right behind Rosewall and Gimeno.

Key to Nadal is serve, which has been very good this year. Key to Fed is return, which has been very good this year. I would not bet against either of them winning another slam this year.

Just checked that Ivanisevic wasnt even 30 at the time that he won Wimbledon. So apart from Federer, we have to go back to the "wood" era to find 30's success. As for Rafa being the 3rd oldest, well nothing about him at that tournament should suprise us .. just like Fed at Wimbledon, Djokovic at AO or Connors at US. If you ask me, if Nadal is healthy I would say that he is a top 5 favorite at RG even at 35-36 years of age.

Yes, but the norm in the wood era was young winners. Nothing like today.

Also, don't forget how much closed roofs have helped older players. The schedule is much more predictable now. Generally top players are guaranteed a day rest between matches. Even this week it made it great for Federer. He did not have to worry about rain.

Everything now favors older players. Don't be surprised to see no one under the age of 30 win a major this year.

When Laver won his GS, it was similar, but for different reasons. The edge went to the old pros. That did not last long.

We are no longer in the early days of Connors, who was just about the only guy not using wood at that time.

Cilic is closing in on age 29. This year he looks like a young guy in comparison to the winners of big tournaments.

Lopez is also about to turn 35.

This is not the year to bet on the under 30 guys...

The field is so open right now I wouldn't be surprised if Ralph made at least the semis.

His form right now is scary good. The guy didn't just dominate the clay season outright he also made final in Miami and Australia. Who knows how far if he would have gotten in Indian Wells if he didn't have to play Fed so early.

I'm not going to count out Ralph as Fed proved to me I shouldn't count him out. You simply cannot count out ATG's.

In Wilander's defence, he didn't say what Nadal was a favourite for at Wimbledon.

Now that he's won the most moral of moral victories, fighting from two sets to love down despite a head injury, TECHNICALLY, Wilander was right.

Only the Nadal is unbeatable when he wins, and wins even when he loses. Here, he's proven that he's the rightful favourite to be the sixteenth bridesmaid and overall moral champion.

Go go Ralph Nader!
