Rafael Nadal refuses to play doubles with Nick Kyrgios at charity event

Nick Kyrgios, tennis’ new bad boy, is so toxic Rafael Nadal was reluctant to play with him in doubles on Wednesday at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy’s charity event, according to a source.
Nadal and Kyrgios, who is from Australia, were supposed to be in the doubles match at Sportime on Randall’s Island but the line-up was rearranged. Nadal, the Spaniard seeded eighth at the US Open, instead played a singles match against Aussie Lleyton Hewitt. The doubles featured John McEnroe and Kyrgios versus Patrick McEnroe and Jonas Bjorkman.
That John McEnroe invited Kyrgios in the wake of his unspeakable behaviour speaks to the ying-yang of the Aussie’s career. He’s still got a huge upside, making his behaviour even more intriguing. His serve is blistering, he’s supremely athletic and everyone is waiting for his grand slam breakthrough.
The ATP has hit Kyrgios with a series of sanctions after his on-court incident with Stan Wawrinka in Montreal when he told the Swiss player his girlfriend was being “banged’’ by his Aussie compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis. The remark was caught on tape.
When a question was asked to Nadal about Kyrgios on Wednesday, McEnroe stepped in to answer.
After winning in doubles, Kyrgios only accepted one question about the incident.
“It’s over now,’’ Kyrgios said. “Everyone’s moved on from it. And I’m playing really good tennis. It’s part of the journey. I don’t think anyone was perfect when they were 20. It wasn’t the best thing. But I learned from that and keep maturing every day.’’

In Montreal, Nadal ripped Kyrgios, who stunned him at Wimbledon in 2014 to explode onto the scene.
“I don’t understand very well why he said that,’’ Nadal said. “It is completely unnecessary. It is out of what a tennis match should be. Age is not an excuse. It’s just about respect. He was wrong.’’
When Kyrgios was introduced to the crowd, the P.A. announcer stated: “He’s been in the news lately. He could’ve easily passed on tonight’s event but did it for the kids.’’

McEnroe said he believes Kyrgios tanked a Wimbledon match against Richard Gasquet. His ranking is 38th and McEnroe, a former bad boy himself, admits the kid with the multi-hued Mohawk has “charisma”.
“One thing I can’t condone is watching any player, throwing the towel for a period,’’ McEnroe said. “He tanked a game against Gasquet. He sort of denied it, but it was obvious that he did. He’s having such issues right now. The pressure’s getting to him. As a 20-year-old kid, I did my share of dumb things, inappropriate things at times. The good part is I had people that I looked at.’’

Nadal has his brand and image to worry about most now that results have taken a hit
How would playing with Kyrgios have affected Nadal's brand and image? I don't think it would have. I don't think if he had played with Kyrgios, people would begin to think of Nadal, "Hey! Didn't he play doubles with that ********* Kyrgios that one time? I'm not going to buy this item which he endorses even though I like them and really want them". o_O

My view is, he didn't want to get "pally" with someone who had just insulted one of his friends (if there is such a thing in competitive world of tennis) - Wawrinka. I mean, Wawrinka and Rafa are, to say the least, buddies. They are hitting partners - or used to be. It may seen as a betrayal - if he had teamed up with Kyrgios, given that this was an exhibition, which tends to get playful and involve a lot of camaraderie. It could be seen as fraternizing with the enemy etc.

I do get the feeling that Kyrgios will be getting shunned behind the scenes from now on and for some time to come.

A source??? Pretty unreliable source because they obviously didn't know what they were talking about.

Nadal and Kyrgios, who is from Australia, were supposed to be in the doubles match

Wrong. Rafa was never scheduled to play doubles. He was always the main attraction for the singles and Hewitt and Bjorkman were to play the doubles against the McEnroes.

That John McEnroe invited Kyrgios in the wake of his unspeakable behaviour speaks to the ying-yang of the Aussie’s career.

Again incorrect. Kyrgios was announced for the event weeks before his melt down in Montreal. There was a lot of talk about whether JMac would cancel the invitation but I guess he decided to put him in the secondary match.

When Kyrgios was introduced to the crowd, the P.A. announcer stated: “He’s been in the news lately. He could’ve easily passed on tonight’s event but did it for the kids.’’

Not mentioned was the fact that the applause for Kyrgios was very tepid. At least there was no outright booing.

didnt rafa have beef with stanimal as well?

really Rafa ?!?

come on guy!

i'm MILDLY disappointed with his decision, if true. assuming there's nothing else to the story.

LMAO! You're such a hypocrite. You responses when Fed said something about the incident...

lol...

so here's the naïve, canned, entitled, bourgeoisie, elitist, etc response from the almighty

haha

if people only knew...

I bet Federer and Tiger had some interesting conversations about such things when they were nike-butt-buddies.

really, how old are you?

anyway, yea Nadal's statement was also quite naïve but I think Nadal is a rather naïve/innocent guy relatively speaking. of course I could be wrong but that's the way I read it.

and Federer's statement was far harsher; seemingly demanding more 'punishment' for NK with his - “I think it’s normal that the tour comes down hard on him and explains to him that it’s not the way forward.”

and also with a hint of racism/racial bias or at the very least condescending elitism with his - “We’re not used to that kind of talk in tennis. I know in other sports it’s quite common, maybe normal. Not in our sport, really." which sounds very familiar to some of his most ardent fans on this board who constantly chide NK with their go a play ghetto basketball instead of our lily white sport of tennis memes!

its also ironic that Warwinka is his close friend that his own wife has chastised for his sleezy behavior but Federer focuses his criticism only on NK for dare airing out dirty laundry about Warwinka's actual actions! hypocritical and ridiculous!

does Federer, and those who naively agree with him - like yourself, actually want tennis players to uphold some set of moral standards for kids to look up to; or just make sure the truth never comes out?

Nadal was never scheduled to play doubles. However he was scheduled to play singles against Kyrgios but JMac replaced him with Hewitt. It was not Nadal's decision. As usual poor reporting from "journalists".

I am totally with Rafa here. Someone needs to speak out.

I am surprised you are actually checking the facts here. Usually, you've never bothered to do so when ripping Federer for saying something he never said, but was put as an article title by some blogger/writer.

how exactly am I being a hypocrite

I said i'm disappointed in Nadal's decision not to play with NK. if that's actually the case, seems like the reporting may have been incorrect.

I see no hypocrisy whatsoever! please enlighten me...

Really, if Kyrgios doesn't understand not to go after someones personal life like that by now, he never will. I think he did it as kind of gamesmanship to shake up Wawrinka so its also extreme bad sportsmanship. The guy is an idiot and a poor human being. I will never buy a brand that sponsors that character.

I wear a lot of Nike stuff and am deciding what to do. At least they should have dropped him from the event. I suspect that some old Australians must have been working behind the scenes to support him.

The top guys' PR-managers seem to have convinced them of taking a hard stance to Kyrgios' actions. Federer, Djokovic and Nadal have all clearly spoken out against his actions, as far as I remember. This is just another example of that, in my opinion.

Yeah no hypocrisy there whatsoever

Nadal getting into the role of a beacon of moral values.
Well that's a pretty strong insinuation.

Ah, let me guess: the usual "mto's, 'roids, uncle toni, topspin monkey" swipes? ;)

The guy exercised his right not to play with someone he considered to be a dirtbag; no need to go full-fedfanboi on his ass. Just sayin' .....

Mildly? LOL!

If Fed did this you'd call him a white supremacist.

You're so full of sheet.

get back on the meds ASAP.

mildly, because this a freaking exo/charity event in which he still participated in and contributed. and notice the mild is in caps!

and if Federer did it, btw we don't even know if Nadal did it, I would call him what I've always called him due to his actions throughout the years - arrogant, aloof, stuck up, crotchety, elitist, etc

I don't give a rat's ass if Nadal did it or not, it's his right to refuse to play with Kyrgios. What I find hilarious is how you can't see how utterly ridiculous your double standards are.
