Rafael Nadal: Tennis must protect clay

There will be less injuries if the Japanese restaurant Rafa burnt his fingers will change the floor surface to clay.( and Rafa likes Carlos Bernades expediting orders to get them on time:)

i agree. the best way to protect clay is to stop using it in tennis!

Lol, I applaud you.

On a serious note, I guess he is somewhat right about this. Tennis on HC isn't so very natural or good for the body. But it's more entertaining darn it

I can well understand Rafa advocating his own main interest, but... how about adjusting your playing style a bit (more) to the surface being played on?

Of course grinding and endless retrieving on HC isn't "good" for one's body, but nobody prohibits Raf to finally start shorting the points, playing more aggressive, and not being sticky'ed about two meters behind the baseline.
Even more, should he really want to prolong his carreer, his time might well be running out on making the proper adjustments in playing style altogether.

He won't change. That's why he wants tennis to "protect" clay. It's a simple translation really. I want more clay and less HC because I can win more on clay, and I miss half the HC tournaments these days anyway.

To dangerous FOR RAFA's body, and too slippery FOR RAFA.

Sorry for shouting, but you weren't listening otherwise :D
Don't bother, the (rather obvious) message won't be coming across anyways.

Yep, I'm afraid you're right about that.

There are clay tournaments littered around everywhere, about 5 months of the tour is on clay even if they are small tournaments and even they, you got 3 clay Masters and 1 slam.

Heck there are clay tournaments even after Wimbledon

I'm just going to warn everybody now. This is the time that you'll see my bias because I'm damn sick and tired of Nadal complaining about the schedule of the tour. This has been going on for years, and it's getting worse the older he gets.

I agree with this. It's getting worse every year.

Nadal is right, no? More and more tournaments are going HC. Even Mediterranean and South American tournaments are going HC now instead of clay. Majority of the slams are HC, majority of the Masters are HC.

We need more clay and more grass and less HC!

Excluding Davis Cup...there are 22 tournaments on Clay this year and 37 on HC. Don't see why Clay needs "protecting".

Needs more Grass.

there is roughly 34 HC tournaments and 28 Clay and 4 Grass... so no... we do not need more clay. we need more grass, we need more carpet, we need more cow dung if you will!!! but not more clay!

If he said clay and grass, I wouldn't feel like he was being selfish, and would think he had a point. But just clay? Not his best moment.

I would like for Rafa to list the players who have been injured post their tennis career (as a result of playing on hard courts). Does anyone out here know?

Change WTF to clay no?, change half of the tour to clay no?, make Carlos Bernardes FINNISH, no? Two year ranking, no?

Yep. Fully agree with you and vanioMan on this.

Poor whining from Nadal - and like Steve0904 already said, it surely isn't getting any better with the years going by. :-|

Then try to remove 250 and 500 and look at the numbers. 70% of all Slams/Masters are HC.

There are twice as many HC Slam/Masters as there are clay Slam/Masters... So yes we do need more clay. But I agree, we need more grass and reintroduce carpet would be good though. They use carpet in challengers so why not?

Here we go again  Why are you misinterpreting his words for the umpteenth time?

1. He didn't say that we need more claycourt tournaments

2. He was asked a question, whether he would return to Buenos Aires next year and he said that he doesn't know because the tournament is supposed to change surface to hard.

So yes, he's right, we don't need more hardcourt tournaments. Acapulco already changed to hard last year and apparently BA is planning to do the same next year.

So why are they turning more and more tournaments to hardcourts? The Golden swing should stay clay.

There's nothing wrong with what he said. He wasn't whining at all. The next time do some research before you open a thread like this because you know it will cause a *****storm.

Nothing unusual from Nadal here, water off a ducks back for me now these comments

edit: if it's true about BA turning to hard next year then his comments are very fair and make more sense.

Nadal says tennis "must protect" tournaments played on clay due to the number of injuries suffered by players on hard courts.

Agreed 100%. There's far too many tournaments on hardcourt these days. Even Acapulco was changed from clay to hardcourt.

I can get behind this.

Even the tour out a bit more.

Too bad grass is so hard to maintain and most tournaments around the world are too lazy and cheap.

Even if I sympathize with this and I am entertained by the green surface, the truth is grass is not the real sport. Meaning, none of us can play on it, you dont have access to a grass court. So, do we want to have a part of the sport only reserved for pros?

Needs more Grass.

With compulsory tournaments these days, clay is predominant on tour only from early April to early June. Hardcourt is predominating from late July to early April the following year.

Any more facts you'd like to share with us?

Yes. Hardcourt is predominating on the tennis tour overwhelmingly, and it's being made worse. Is it true that Buenos Aires is switching to hardcourt too? Those questioning what Nadal is saying need to remember that Muster couldn't play on hardcourt much after his 1989 accident that severed left knee ligaments. Hardcourt is much more demanding on the joints.

Well suprise surprise..

I don't understand. Why doesn't he say more grass instead? Why clay when there is already so much clay tournaments?

I've always said it. The guy cares about himself and nobody else. When someone is so concentrated in winning, you get blind and think that everything that suits you suits everybody else!

Go HOME rafa!

What about existing clay tournaments going to hardcourt, like Acapulco? And now Buenos Aires is being rumoured.

Just because the winner under debate played one 250 doesn't mean that 75% of the Masters/Slams should be HC, no?

ermmmm... the mickey mouse 250 was on HC? no it was Not!!!!

Clear as mud now that Rafa is pitching for WTF to be played on clay.

If it is a big tournament , surface should be rotated
