Rafael Nadal to make return in Acapulco

Just LOOOOOL at those saying, “He’s not going going to play Acapulco and might miss IW and Miami. Hope he’s ready for clay!11!”

The “injury” report said it was a minor strain that just needed rest, something that most players probably have after playing. He was running full speed in the 4th set of that match but knew he was going to lose.

Also, big LOOOOL at those who said he wouldn’t play and just hand over #1 to Federer. He’s going to play that tournament like it’s RG if Fed is playing Dubai, and you can be sure of that.

Just stop these accusations of him faking the injury. It was a freaking grand slam match in the QFs. There is no way he fakes an injury when he still has all the chances in the world to win the match. There is absolutely no logic at all in these accusations. It was his 2nd retirement in a GS match in his career, and with his history of how he plays his matches, his grit, intensity, always positive, there are no basis either in these accusations.

Also, this argument that he only played AO to get to the QFs and keep his #1 ranking, you guys do realize by ''faking'¨' this injury cause he thought he's gonna lose anyway or simply to ''save'' himself from clay and not risk anything (or whatever), he handed Federer the #1 spot in his hands. Federer right now has everything in his hands, and all he has to do is to win dubai.

Very smart strategy by Rafa..

Sometimes I wonder if anyone here have played any sport at all.

So Rafa is being extra careful by 'only' playing both IW and Miami, plus a lead up event? Isn't that pretty much a regular spring HC schedule?
I was on about some poasters say that if he's fit rafa could play clay in rio for example..

or play hamburg/gstaad or whatever clay post Wimbledon (if lose early). but those days are over.

"The brutal changes of surfaces are not advisable, my priority now is to be healthy and to be able to choose the calendar that I think is most convenient."

How is playing Acapulco good for his health and/or convenient? And I don't even know what "brutal changes of surfaces" is supposed to mean.

Hmm. Haven't you heard that tennis is played on different court surfaces?

If Fed plays Dubai, the #1 ranking is not in Rafa's hands anymore, Fed overtakes Rafa if he wins Dubai regardless of Rafa's performance.

Always amusing to see comments like this from tennis fans and, apparently, people who have never really competed in sports.

Yes, those who compete in sports for a living are always truthful about injury

Nadal had words of praise for Roger Federer, whom he congratulated for his twentieth Grand Slam, and highlighted the good harmony between the two, stating that "this is a sport and the rivalry ends on the court".
But the rivalry goes on ad infinitum on TW.

Nadal will do anything he can to prevent Federer from reaching #1. He's not only going after Federer's slam count record, but also his 302 weeks at #1.

What does that have to do with Acapulco? It's a hard court tournament in between a hard court slam and a hard court masters.

According to OP, Rafa said: "The brutal changes of surfaces are not advisable..." Rafa will follow this advice - he'll play only on one surface from January through March.

Yes but he will make Fed sweat for it by winning Acapulco.
Fed should just announce a surprise WC in Rotterdam once it's too late for Nadal to enter anything, and win enough just to take on #1 and withdraw. No need to sweet (I think 2 wins to reach the semis should be enough)

He is really only choosing one event between the AO and the Masters so hardcourt is the only senisble choice before moving onto the European clay court season.

Yes there is no change of surface. But he always complain about the hard surface, and yet played Perth or Brisbane, then Acapulco.

And he's focused on the GOAT. Who can blame him?
Still, if grandpa does his thing in Dubai, it's out of Nadal's hands.

Would be down right insane if a 36.5 year old becomes world number 1.

Exciting times ahead.

Fed worshipers are focused on the GOAT 24/7.

Yes, but Rafa is still going to play hoping that Fed will either skip Dubai or lose early there.

You always have to play to give yourself chances. And Nadal is not a quitter.

Nadal isn't touching that record. And he knows it. He just wants to be no.1 because anyone would want tto be the best player in the world. Nobody would just give it up without a fight.

And 2 more weeks at no.1 for Federer isn't going to make a difference to Nadal in the long run because he will get it back anyway of he loses it.

To be quite honest, he deserves it. He has done the most winning since last year. And the only reason it isn't reflected on the computer rankings is because of his age.

If Fed was 5 years younger he would play Dubai hands down without any worry. Nowadays we have to wait for confirmation that he is playing because it is not a sure thing.

It is more about Federer making sure that he secures the #1 at his age than about keeping it for a prolonged period.

Also, if he plays Dubai, even if he doesn't win, he is giving himself better chances for later.

Otherwise, if there is a negative development of the events, he might not get it at all this year, which means he will never get it ever again, most probably, and that is a chance to do the right thing when he still can.

Let's assume Federer feels good physically and will participate in Dubai. He wins it and becomes no.1 again. He won't hold it for more than 2 weeks at most. So in the long run it won't affect Nadal this year.

The eventual points won will play a role when Nadal defends a ton of points during the clay season and also in the tournaments around the US Open, so it is a lot more than two weeks we are talking about here.

Roger also has something like 4500 points to defend before the US open series start. Not sure he would keep that large amount either. Sure Nadal has a larger amount but still... (I think about 6500 or so)

The AO seems to have generated more conspiracy theories than the X-Files. But yeah, this one does seem pretty daft. If he was going to fake an injury why not do it before the game or just tank the whole match in three sets?

Well, we should ask the conspiracy theorists. The people who have played at Nadals level and should know everything about these injury strategies

Rafa is going to play in Acapulco because he confirmed his participation already half a year ago.

He didn't play in Basel last year because his right knee troubled him in Shanghai.
But he decided to play Acapulco after citing injury at the AO.

Nadal chose to play because he wants to hold on the the #1 ranking. Had Federer not threaten his #1, he would have not play Acapulco.

There are almost 5 weeks between getting injured at the 2018 AO and the start of the Acapulco tournament. According to his doctor, it will take three weeks to recover from the injury (he can start to train lightly sooner).
