Rafael Nadal to make return in Acapulco

There are almost 5 weeks between getting injured at the 2018 AO and the start of the Acapulco tournament. According to his doctor, it will take three weeks to recover from the injury (he can start to train lightly sooner).
And you ignore the the fact that he's only 155 atp points ahead of Federer is the reason he chose to play Acapulco.

Nadal obviously feels he can compete, so why not? It is clear his injury in AO was not severe if he is already committed to being back for this event so quickly. And why would he want to lose the top ranking? Who doesn't want to stay at the top of the mountain?

Rafa is going to play in Acapulco because the tournament is in his schedule.

So? Why schedule it if he thinks there is too much hard court? He could pull out of it if he was really so concerned about the potential injuries that hard courts could inflict on him.

Who doesn't want to stay at the top of the mountain?

Rafa should just skip the rest of the HC season and play clay.

He’s guaranteed to dominate on clay while on hard court he'll get blitzed by Fedr.

He is basically saying that the tear that he sustained during his match was enough to cause him to retire from AO, but he should heal up in two weeks and continue with his planned schedule without missing anything.
Thanks.
Hopefully he doesn’t push himself too hard like last year.

He is basically saying that the tear that he sustained during his match was enough to cause him to retire from AO, but he should heal up in two weeks and continue with his planned schedule without missing anything.

From Rafa's Facebook via 'See Translation':
¤¤ Doctors tell me that in two weeks I can be on track by gradually resuming my workouts.
The normal recovery time is about three weeks, which in principle does not change anything in my calendar and I will play in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami. ¤¤

I know that you are speculating.

Rafa's provisional 2018 schedule was published in Spanish newspapers (Marca and AS) in December:

That schedule doesn’t look good for his body..

But I say that every year and Rafa turns out fine but he’s not getting younger.

But the Spaniard said he was focused on being at top form at the "most important time of year".
Nadal has in his sights the clay season played between mid-April and early June.
"The brutal changes of surfaces are not advisable, my priority now is to be healthy and to be able to choose the calendar that I think is most convenient."

If Nadal recognizes that brutal changes of surfaces are not advisable, how come he's advocated for the ATP Tour Finals, a 1500-point competition, to be played on a surface entirely different from the one immediately leading up to the contest?

Rafa hasn't beat Federer in several years, so any psychological damage he has is permanent.

Acapulco won't change that as he will not play Federer there.

This schedule looks the schedule of someone who might feeling the pressure to play. What you think?

It's a normal schedule of a commitment player.
(The ATP Rulebook: A 2018 ATP commitment player is any player positioned in the Top 30 in the ATP 2017 Rankings (singles) as of November 6, 2017.)

18 tournaments (+WTF) count towards a player's ranking. Rafa's schedule doesn't contain more tournaments.

Rafa: "too much hard Court, no? There is life after tennis."

Also Rafa: plays Acapulco to try to stop Fed from getting #1

I can't stand Nadal's moaning constantly about this and that and yes, yet again his actions, i.e. playing a useless 500 tournament in Acapulco, contradict his criticism of too many tournaments on tour, but in all fairness to him, why wouldn't he try and sustain his #1? This is sports and he's an elite competitor after all. He's Federer's rival when it comes to all things tennis. You bet he'll go after Fed's slam record, try and prevent Federer from achieving #1 again, etc.

Roger also has something like 4500 points to defend before the US open series start. Not sure he would keep that large amount either. Sure Nadal has a larger amount but still... (I think about 6500 or so)

Yep.

Both chunks of points cancel each other before the US Open, but the timing of how many points will drop and what is won will determine who will hold the #1 position most of the time.

If Federer wants to considerably extend his record of weeks at number one, he needs to outdo Rafa now and in IW.

Why is he playing Queens? Or grass at all?
It's not like he's winning them. What's the point? Just rest up for the USO.

I don't think it's about the #1 ranking. He knows he's lucky to have it and he doesn't expect to keep it.
The truth is he is playing everything because he expects to lose early more often than not. He has no confidence in himself any more.

Federer obviously has the belief - putting all his eggs into a few baskets and so far it's coming off.
