Rafael Nadal's insult utterance to Sampras era

nadal is a fool , he is the most beneficiated guy with the homogenization of the surfaces and has the face to said this??? LOLLLL.

sampras in some matches maybe was a little boring over grass , but when I saw sampras in hardcourts he was amazing : serve , volley , powerful forehand and much more.

his matches against agassi in hard were orgasmics.

because that I am a fed fan too , now all the players are equals , same game no variety.

and with federer you can see variety in the game and skills.

for this reason , I can`t understand how a sampras`s fan can be a nadal fan and hate federer.

I mean , they want that this guys with his words and game surprass pete?????? LOLLL

Nadal, being raised as a claycourter, has little respect for the type of game at which Sampras was a master. On the other hand, he idolises Borg.

Ralph is the most opportunistic self serving slam winner of all time. He doesn't care about the state of the game, the history of the sport and the future of tennis. All that he cares about is winning, Tio's programmed robot. His suggestion of a 2 year ranking system, reducing HC events, converting WTF to a clay event, threatening to boycott blue clay Madrid says it all. I'm sure there's more, feel free to look up for yourself.

It's ironic that fans of former pros chalk up Ralph as their knight in shining armour when he basically disses past champions but denigrate Fed whenever possible who respects former greats and says that he doesn't consider himself GOAT and considers it a great disservice to past greats to call himself GOAT.

The guy's an ungrateful self serving manchild, what else can you expect?

Those matches were sometimes boring ( Rosset, Krajicek ..), but other generations were also great, at one time you got Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Wilander,Mac, Connors, Mecir younger Agassi, Chang, Courier, Sampras, imagine a draw with all those names and different styles of play.

I like Mecir carrying 3 racquets only a lot of the time. Sometimes just 2.:) But the guy sure knows a thing or two about visualizing--cool, even way back then when few people knows about visualization!:)

When somebody likes Sampras game and only this kind of game he can NOT like Federer´s or Nadal´s.

Both play heavy topspin, the serves are mediocre, they are baseliners.

I like Nadal because of his attitude, he does not bend over (maybe for Xisca, who knows?) for anybody. This connects him with Sampras.

Wow, Fed gets awards from ATP and his sponsor Moët. I am impressed.

ATP banned because of him carpet. He can not handle the speed.

"I only believe in the results of votings which i have faked by myself!"

Nadal believes previous tennis eras cannot match the excitement generated by the current stars of the sport.

"Personally, to watch a Pete Sampras versus Goran Ivanisevic match, or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable, It's not really tennis, it is a few swings of the racquet.
It was less eye-catching than what we do now. Everyone enjoys the tennis we play much more. I am not saying we are playing better tennis, just more enjoyable tennis. For me, in the past it was just serve, serve, serve." said Nadal.

its his opinion... Sounds like s*** but its the way he thinks. It will be worse if he said that he likes more Sampras game than his game.

I agree and that's also the reason why Americans don't have any good male players atm.

Did Roger cut you off in traffic because there is nothing remotely unsportsmanlike about that shot.

Some may say the top four are boring compared to other eras such as the late 70s but the BIG FOUR are all very sportsmanlike. Novak when he was younger arguably bent the medical timeout rule but he's long past those days. The other three are beyond reproach.

Why don't you defend Nadal in the gifs posted by "tennissportsrog"?
I would say you're biased.

Keep in mind that Nadal is usually very respectful of all current and past champions. Here is he just giving his opinion and should be respected and appreciated since everyone is always looking for sincerity from todays players and for him, this statement seems very reasonable and understandable.

He did say "For me". He is the greatest baseline player ever so what would you expect regarding the old school fast court serve dominating game ?

All extremes are boring. People who think current power tennis from the baseline is boring should watch some of the matches in the 80s, especially on clay, especially by some of the Swedes. Endless rallies with high looping balls and not a lot of pace. Pretty soporiferous. Today at least the power with which they hit requires a physical intensity that keeps things more lively, and the points are resolved sooner.

Then on the opposite end you have some of the grass tennis in the 90s, where pretty much all aspects of the game are eliminated except the serve and the occasional putaway volley. Boom boom tennis for a whole match. I don’t know what’s worse. At least the long high looping clay tennis in relative slow motion had some hypnotizing, somniferous effect.
Well-stated.

All baseline bashing is boring. All serve and one-volley points are boring.

Gotta agree.

Nadal and his uncle are so arrogant. According to them, things are only good if they play exactly into Nadal's hands. The worst part is Nadal tries to speak for everyone else when he says "it's not good for the fans no?".

Sampras was wonderful to watch. Watching Nadal moonball is like watching paint dry.

[he obviously has an extensive knowledge about the history of his chosen sport]

I do not think so. Nadal has also looked down on Agassi. When Agassi confesses use of a drug. Roger Federer was by very polite criticism. (Of course, Sampras and Roger's Agassi are friends. I add it impartially.)

However, Nadal's criticism by violent criticism. (I am not a fan of Agassi and dislike a drug. I also add this again.)

The problem, Nadal is not looking at most tennis in front of the Federer era.

When Nadal was age of about 20. The journalist questioned Nadal. "Who is a favorite WTA player?" Nadal said, "Roger Federer..." "Roger Federer? Although it is the WTA player whom I asked ..." Nadal said. "I do not know a WTA player well.."

Nadal is ignorant about the past history. This arrogant utterance comes from his ignorance.

How can Nadal be angry at someone for doing drugs when he himself was busted non publicly for EPO? WOW! What audacity!!!

and different era's even.

Just LOL at this rubbish the 90's were boring. The real arrogance here are wimbledon and Queens patrons who expect "all styles of tennis on one surface".

almost by definition..this is impossible...last time I checked there was a tunnel that could get you to paris for a different style of play.

I guess those other matches in 1994 were crazy boring too..like Agassi's US open run..or the Miami final between pete an andre...or the courier-sampras grudge matches.

So they take ONE matche ..goran vs pete..and change an entire tour because of it.

so tell me 2014 vs 1994 fans...where can i find serve and volley play again..the indoor season? oh, that's right..they destroyed the character that part of the season had too.

If Nadal was referring to a match in the early or mid 90s on a fast surface, then he is absolutely right. Men's tennis at Wimbledon and other fast surfaces during this time period were very boring. Points often consisted of only 1, 2 or 3 shots. This was particularly true when you had 2 big servers like Pete and Goran.

There was a lot of talk during the 90s about how to reform tennis. There was talk about going back to wood racquets or limiting the size or power of graphite rackets. We saw the introduction of larger balls (6% to 8% larger). When these other ideas failed to garner support, other measures were taken. Balls became brighter. The Slazenger Wimbledon balls, the Dunlop Gran Prix balls and other premium balls are noticeably brighter. The other solution was to slow down the grass of Wimbledon and other fast surfaces.

This is the truth. Now if we could only come up with a solution to add back some allcourt SV tennis back into the game. Maybe more grass and late season indoors that matter for rankings ? Would also be helpful to extend careers like back when the players were not running soo much corner to corner on hards.

lol forgot about that tennissportsrog guy, funny guy

Nadal was giving his opinion, he has his opinion, everyone has. Don't call players fake when they give boring answers in interviews if later you call them digusting when they say what they think.

that being said, it is stupid to say tennis in the 90s was not tennis, they used balls and raquets and played withing the rules of tennis :D

Freedom of speech is a great good!

A man is entitled to his opinion.
But it seems some people cannot handle it!

:D

Two S/vers can play very exciting tennis, if they are evenly matched, and power is not the sole determinator of outcome. Matter of fact it can be electrifying if you frequently see strategy in the return games, forcing some real thought and varieth in net play.
All I ask is to see some sense of tactics beyond where to serve your next bomb. That can come on Sampras' return game, if not his serve game, but at least one of players needs to depend on their first/ second even third volley to win some points.

Don't tell me that a Navratilova/ Mandlikova or MacEnroe/ Leconte match on fast grass or carpet is dull stuff. You are either lying or never watched.

Certainly today's players are not 1 dimensional and have all-round skills

99% of the field are baseliners. Perhaps more.

Nadal would be much less accomplished had they not homogenize the courts. He would have half the titles if the courts were not tailored for baseliners by slowing them down and increasing the bounce, as well as slowing the balls down. If they nearly redesigned my sport perfectly for myself, I too would say the game was better. I fear what is happening is the dumbing down of tennis, AKA soccering of tennis. Lowest common denominator sports win more fans. I understand this from a capitalist perspective. But at this point, why bother with grass. Just make them all clay or hard court, and end the pretention. Make all the matches as close to the last as possible. Remove any specialists or variety. Wait...what am I saying - that's already happened.

He is entitled to his opinion but I'd rather be bored for 2.5 hours than bored for 5. Regardless Pete was way too good a shotmaker to find boring and Goran could be boring but his serve was amazing to watch. Rather watch the 1998 Wimby final or 95 semis than the 2012 AO semis or final...no doubt about that.
So it's better something in between with rallies not that long, but neither very short, something like Fed's game back in his hayday, am I right ? :p

This from a guy who sported Capri pants and sleeveless t shirts. Forget returning the courts to ‘normal/historic’ speeds, just take away his 70+RA stick and shaped poly. You’ll be left with a Club pro on the outskirts of Madrid, no?
