Rafa's doctor: Nadal should be ready for Olympics

The proximity between the end of the Roland Garros and the start of Wimbledon forced us to take a quick decision. The treatment is going well, but we decided that it's not the right moment to play such a tournament. Rafa is always ready to play, but after speaking about everything he took the right decision, he will come back on court when he is totally recovered.

We are all confident on the fact that Rafa will go to the Olympics. This is my goal, this is the goal of all the medical staff. If I say 'I believe Rafa will be at the Olympics', is because I truly believe he will be there!

Well atleast its a start. Some sources say it shouldn't take more than a month. So it seems like he will have enough time to let it heal and train before the Olympics and the hard court swing

Is this doctor called Dr Fuentes by any chance?? Because if it is i'm putting every cent i have on Rafa right now to clean sweep the Olympics/Cinci/US Open/Shanghai/Paris and finally win the WTF!! Money in the bank baby!

PS - actually even then i think he would lose the WTF to Djoko ;)

Dr. Michele Ferrari, who worked for a Swiss firm was (is?) extraordinary...

I think the country's select their players.

Non nadal fan, but this is good news. A month or two is nothing for a wrist injury (the way he hits it), glad its not bad

My apologies if i just cant take Spanish doctors or the GPPD in general seriously, i'm far too immature for that.

However Nadal fanboys will be glad to hear i genuinely hope he returns well enough to play good matches v the top players, was hoping for a Nads v Fed match on clay or grass this season and was sadly disappointed. Time is running out for both.

What about Swiss doctors?

Smart move from Nadal -- skip museum, go for 2nd OSG, which would effectively put him out of Djokovic-Federer reach for good.

Obviously more than Toni and Rafa could afford! ;)
Nadal is a straight shooter, which makes the Federer machine hate him even more. Nadal saved his money and is already giving back to the sport by opening a world number 1 tennis academy, providing hope and inspiration to top tennis youth talent around the world.

Federer, on the other hand, has always spent lavishly on tournament directors, umpires, electronic line arbitration system operators, doping regulators, journalists, and punditry. Even linesmen flock to Federer like pigeons on wild peanuts after a match he wins, looking for him to drop a couple of extra hundreds out of his wallet as a bonus.

He does have his foundation to help underpriviliged kids in South Africa and elsewhere.

Sure, a “charity” where all the directors are relatives of ITF officials, tournament directors, and anti-doping cartel bosses. Tax-free bribery at its finest! And less than 1% of the extorted funds goes into organizing an annual photo-op luncheon with kids of the local dictators, war profiteers, illicit diamond trade overlords, and shady ivory dealers.

I don't see him playing there to be honest. Something that we don't know about is going on here.

Agreed, their testing is, I believe, more stringent than the ATP's(which, IMO, led to his "injury" that caused him to miss the 2012 Olympics). I think this is a face saving move and I suspect that they'll decide that the injury didn't heal as quickly as anticipated, so, regretfully, he must skip it (but he may get to carry the flag in the opening ceremony, I get the impression he's real big on that).

Be careful with your words - Rafa can sue you!
Rafa has filed his defamation lawsuit against Roselyne Bachelot, who was quoted as saying: “We know that Nadal’s famous seven-month injury [2012/2013] was without a doubt due to a positive [drug test]. When you see a tennis player who stops playing for long months, it is because he has tested positive and because they are covering it up.”
The Guardian, April 25, 2016: Nadal responded immediately, threatening to sue her, "I’m going to sue her, and I’m going to sue everyone who is going to comment something similar in the future."

I think this is spot on.

The players have to "qualify" with a certain amount of Davis/Fed Cup availability....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_–_Qualification

"Players must be part of a nominated team for three Fed Cup (women) or Davis Cup (men) events between the 2012 and 2016 olympics. This requirement is reduced to two Fed/Davis Cup events during the Olympic cycle from 2012 to 2016 if their nation competed at the Zone Group round robin level for three of the four years or if the player has represented their nation at least twenty times."

Has nadal played more than 20 davis cups?

"Any player in the world's top 56 is eligible"

Seem to have a few exceptions.

Thanks, these are the two things in tennis i dont keep up with, olympics and davis cup

I don't know. I would think he was available 3/2 times in that period though. I think he he has over 20 matches too. Seemed like he was edging in on 30...

If you're not joking-about Nadal suing me-you need YEARS of therapy.

The problem with Nadal is that he needs several tournaments, after a break, to find his form. It would be good to know if he is going to play at least one or two warm up tournaments before the Olympics. Canada Masters or Cincinnati come before the Olympics, right?

Rogers cup is before (Jul 25th-31st), and Cinci after (Aug 13th-21st). The Olympic tennis event is from Aug 6th-14th. I do agree regarding the warm-up matches. He needs those to build confidence.

I wish him well, but if I were him, I wouldn't go to Rio. He already has a gold medal, will likely not win there after the injury and there is a risk of Zika. Just take a bit more time to recover and be ready for the U.S. series.

Rafa is supposed to play Spain's Davis Cup tie in the middle of July.

All good points, but are you familiar with the Mallorcan Mafia?

You think he will miss Wimbledon, but play the Davis Cup? I doubt it, but at least the Romanians chose the indoor hard, which is a good warm up surface for the American Season/the Olympics.

I sure hope that is the case and that he is able to get back into top health by mid July but it seems unlikely unfortunately. Wimbledon final is 10th July. Rio starts 6th August. I do hope he recovers though and I'm proven wrong. Tennis w/o Rafa is a drag :(.
