Rajeev Ram moves and hits a bit like Sampras

Is it just me or does Rajeev Ram also remind you of Sampras?

It's the way he waits to return serve...the way he hits his forehands...his forehand volleys and to an extent his backhand as well...

It's a shame he doesn't do any of the above anywhere half as good as Sampras

Ram is a Pete Sampras want to be, his serve motion, forehand motion, racquet, lead tape placement, serves and volleys
on first serves, one handed backhand, overgrip, are
all similar to Sampras. Ram is just a Sampras poser who is nowhere near as good. Sampras is one of the best players and Ram is just a bum compared th Sampras, that's all he is.

Ram has been a Sampras clone since the beginning of his career.

Same service motion and forehand stroke.

You had the same post in the Pro Racquets section

He doesn't have the footwork to play at the highest level. Seems like he just cracked the top 100, so good for him.
If he is to emulate someone, you can't do a lot better than Sampras.

The club of Sampras wannabees is pretty big and ain't exclusive. Did you know they had to kick out Fed last year for winning RG and SW19? :)

I'm watching Ram right now, and absolutely, his movements and strokes remind me of Sampras.

Obviously, he's nowhere near as good as Sampras, but it's clear who he modeled his game after. I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong using a certain player as a model, but it should probably only be a starting point.

Does anyone remember Karolina Sprem who upset Venus a few years ago. Even with her one handed forehand, her strokes and movement were clearly modeled after Seles. It was eerie.

Yep. It was prophesied long ago by a sage that Cincinnati was a tournament in determining the GOAT. And Brad Gilbert was, apparently for a 12 month period, the GOAT.

He's hit a lot of in-position forehands long. He may want to add a bit more spin and de-Sampras a bit. He has good shots, but doesn't seem to be able to put it all together.

He's fun to watch hit.

Ram needs to really work on his mobility around the Court. Sampras was able to make things look so easy and "unhurried" because he was doing so much constant "work" by always running extremely quickly into the right position on Court. Sampras had extremely good speed about the Court, combined with of course, world class footwork. Ram does not get himself in position well enough to be able to play the way Sampras did. Sampras was almost always able to take extremely quick initial steps when preparing for his next shot. I did not see that same ability with Ram, to say the least. Honestly, this is a unfair comparison. Sampras is an All Time Great Tennis player. Not many players can match him in many departments on the Court.

Although his strokes look just like Sampras's, Ram lacks the movement, footwork, speed, and athleticism of Sampras. That's why Sampras had the career that he had and Ram has the career that he has.

Yes, I agree he's very fun to watch. :)

I knew the moment I heard the commentators make the comparison that several threads would suddenly pop up on the TW boards from people who supposedly just happened to notice the similarities, of which there are actually very few.

Rajeev may hit like Pete,,,,but MOVEs nothing like Pete. Ram moves like Pete with ankle sprain-----terrible ankle sprain.

Well, I've been saying that Ram played like Sampras for at least 6 years, after I saw him play live at a local tournament back in 2004.

Let players like Ram and Dent be examples of why amateur players over in 'tennis instruction' shouldn't copy the form of their idols. Function first and accept whatever it looks like, the form.

Any Pete fan would have noticed it, starting with the service motion.

But I think he was even doing the same shoulder-sleeve forehead rub.

Rajeev will be a perennial contender at Newport. Those courts are perfect for his game: bad bounces, short rallies, hard to place passing shots. The Wimby courts on the other hand are more like clay courts.

Ram Serve isn't as precise as sampras and less pop. It also has bad trajectory! The only thing similiar is the serve motion!

Still it was funny to see the guy play similiar to sampras. Had sampras played agianst him....it would be hilarious scenario!

It would be almost like when Federer played Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001, when Federer modeled his game a lot like Sampras - serving and volleying on every point, even many 2nd serves, and using the PS 6.0 85, although his service motion and forehand were different than Sampras's.

Ram was also clueless when volleying, today. I cringed every time he approached the net.

I said the same thing when I saw the match.

Here's a short video of the match for those who want to see the similarities.

Dent certainly didn't attempt to copy Sampras, although he probably did look up to him as a "S&V"er, if that is what you are trying to imply.

Yeah, he modeled his game after his father I think, Phil Dent, which was an oldschool australian S&Ver.

His father coached him, but I remember reading somewhere that his father didn't think that he would be a S&Ver with his size. I don't think anyone knows why Dent chose S&V, but I'm not complaining, it's so pretty to watch...
