Rank the 3 slam seasons by the big three

For four years? Absolutely it was the gold standard ;) IMO the gap in athleticism between Fed in 2006 and 2021 Djokovic is pretty massive, over five sets you're way overstating Djokovic's case but whatever. Guess you don't put much stock in the injury reports then lol. Fed was erratic but he had sets where he was absolutely ridiculous as well. I don't think Djokovic in 2021 is good enough to stay with Fed once he gets cooking.

Djokovic is extremely tough to beat at the AO but the present era is masking his decline imo. I'm not claiming 2006 Fed would beat 2013 Djokovic or something lol. This was the worst winning version of Djokovic imo.

The level of athleticism between 2006 Federer and 2021 Djokovic is massive? Not a chance dude. Djokovic at 34 moves like he's still in his 20s and is keeping up with guys 10 years younger than him from the baseline. That's unheard of. Did you watch the match yesterday? Did you not see him diving on the court at volleys doing cartwheels and hopping up like nothing? Well we just see if differently. I think 2021 Djokovic from the SF and final is better than 2006 Federer. 2006 Federer did have his moments of brilliance but they were overshadowed by his moments of sloppiness. A better opponent would have beaten him and he was asking for just that in the final. Djokovic played far better in his final.

I think you guys underrate the level of play of this field from my view, and yesterday is a great argument to that. That was a high level match and one of the best Paris Masters matches I've ever seen.

Fair enough that means USO 2011 SF Djokovic was sizeably worse.
Yep. Absolutely solid performance but not a masterclass. Likewise, I wouldn’t call Fed’s 2004 match with Agassi a masterclass on the level of his best performances there.

Fair enough. Do you think 2011 Djokovic at the USO struggles anymore with 2012 Del Potro and 2015 Cilic because I would imagine he beats both in straights.

He definitely beats both in straights but it’s not a clear demolition.

I would find it hard to see than Cilic getting more than like 1-2 extra more games off that Djokovic considering he won like 3 in 2015 and had a injury.
Yeah Cilic is getting crushed by most top players in good form anyway.

But it’s the way Novak took care of business that day…

2012 could possibly do it in as few as three tight sets (like Fed-Roddick 2007). Four is more likely for 2015.
Djokovic wouldn't have much a chance of straight setting any great Federer at the USO regardless the form a great version of Federer or a well playing version of Federer in a slam has never been straight setted.

If he keeps up the kind of level he sustained for three straight sets vs. Delpo, I can’t see how he’d lose one if Fed walked into the match in that form.

Djokovic winning is fair but him maybe beating Federer in straights is a different story.

Even in the present era you can still see the Djokovic decline at AO and the other slams.

2015 was BOAT season in level of tennis - 82-6 with 31 top 10 wins en route to the Novak Slam. 2011 and 2006 are very close for me with Djokovic finishing 2011 bad in the last two months after a great start and Federer being 2-4 against Nadal in 2006. I put 2011 higher only because I think it was incredible to knock Nadal and Federer off the pedestal they had been at the top of the sport for many years and this competition is greater than 2006 where Rafa was the only threat - but I could easily flip these two.

Why don't we compare 2021 Djoko to 2006 Davydenko instead of only 2006 Fed to 2021 Zverev?

I mean, can't claim Djoko would edge Fed for sure, but Davydenko had like 3 SPs to take the 3rd set and he choked like he always does. Why does only Zverev gets penalized from usual suspects?

Very true and good questions. ;)

How would you compare both to Murray of the AO 13/15 finals?

Fair, but a couple of those losses were against prime Nadal on clay in '06. And he took him to the brink. Not to mention being 59-2 on hard courts. Also, I think Novak was more impressive in '11 like you said for breaking through as well as being more offensive minded than in 2015. If only he didn't run out of gas post US Open.

Honestly don't see how you can think 2021 Djokovic is comparable to 2006 Fed. Djokovic moves better than the Next Gen but the only elite mover is Medvedev and he probably covers the court better laterally now imo. Put him up against peak Big 4 and he'd come off worse. Federer is quicker and more explosive than 2021 Djokovic, quite clearly.

Don't see how they could be overshadowed by his sloppiness when he won...Baggy was clearly better than Med for the first two sets as well. No one in Djokovic's draw has the game to upset Federer's rhythm from the baseline because they're too passive.

Yesterday was a good final, but 2015 Djokovic would have beaten Medvedev quite handily. So it's all relative.

Medvedev is the fastest taller guy I have ever seen play tennis, bar none. Dude can reach shots in corners point after point and with his reach, his defense is unreal.

You're exaggerating here about Federer's quickness in 2006 compared to Djokovic's now. Djokovic at his peak was a better athlete and his physical decline is slower than Federer's. Federer at his age had a weakness with defense and retrieving shots from his forehand side. Djokovic is more agile now than Federer was at his age, and he's not extremely far off from where he was 6 or 7 years ago.

Zverev did not play passive, nor did Raonic and nor did Karatsev.

2015 Djokovic would have beaten Medvedev but not handily. It would still have been somewhat close, and maybe two close sets.

I'm also not penalizing Fed for nearly going down 0-2 to a (clearly inferior) player in Baghdatis bc he raised his level exquisitely when necessary.

Baghdatis was playing a.t.g level tennis for two sets. I firmly believe that if Fed was awarded a 1-set-all with Baggy playing like he did. He'd have taken it.

Even if Fed had gone down 0-2, Baggy was most likely done after those first 2 monster sets anyway.

Fed was down 15-40 to go 0-3 & a double break down in the second if i remember correctly. I think that was when the match finally turned for Fed.

I don't know how.Literally nothing can compare to 2011 and 2015 competition and performance wise..I guess it is based on wishful thinking...

Was just having a wee roll on the floor laughing at 2021 as second best season

But what makes you think the competition in 2015 is extraordinary?
Rafa was out/ Finnish. Roger hadn't won a slam in 3 years, desperately changing racquets and coach.

Murray at AO: Routine win in 4. Bagel in the final set.
Wawrinka at RG: Novak couldn't deal with that level. A Swiss stopped CYGS this year, too.
Federer at W: Old man starts well, but no doubt where this is going.
Federer at US: The born of Breakpointerer, who converted 4 out of 23 and played possibly his worst slam final.

Are you just going by the names, is that it? Honestly, only the RG final is a top match out of those 4 finals.

In 2021, Novak had even worse competition at AO. Straight sets. Not as tough final opponent at RG. Berrettini in Wimbledon played a terrible match and was injured, as well. Medvedev at US... perhaps a strong opponent, who knows? Djokovic was in a fog and played a bizarre match.

Everyone agrees 2011 is tough competition and high level.

You guy just are caught up in 2004-2007 and think it's the gold standard and nobody can touch it. Well...I got somebody who can handle him. Lol. :sneaky: Seriously, 2006 Federer wasn't great and I would bet on 2021 Djokovic playing well beating him. I wouldn't say the same for 2007 Federer.

Most likely so especially if it's the Djokovic from 1st round through QF. Still, I'm just showing how tough Djokovic was to beat there from 2011 to 2021, omitting 2018 of course.

Don't think Djokovic was necessarily a better athlete at his peak - just a different one, Djokovic with the lateral movement and flexibility but Fed with the more explosive footwork and racket head speed. Even ignoring that there's no absolutely no way 2021 Djokovic is an equivalent or near equivalent athlete to 2006 Fed. It's ridiculous to think so IMO. Federer's limitations in 2015 are irrelevant because I'm not talking about 2015 Fed but 2006 Fed.

Also I wasn't talking about Raonic or Karatsev here, Aslan didn't play well enough for it to matter if he was passive or not anyway. Zverev plays from deep behind the baseline, I don't think he was particularly aggressive off the ground. He did a lot of damage with the serve but like I said it faltered in the big games. The difference in the tempo of the rallies between the 2006 QF and 2021 QF is quite obvious IMO.

I think 2015 Djokovic would be clearly too good for Med man, for one he'd be the one winning most of the baseline exchanges and Medvedev doesn't handle that sort of adversity very well IMO.

Anyway we're not going to agree here, so agree to disagree if you want.

Federer AO 2006 final vs Murray AO 12 SF who wins?

can somebody pls confirm this

that djok is the only male player to win 4 different ATP 1000 Masters events 5 times or more ie IW (5 times), Miami (6 times), Italian Open (5 times) & Paris (6 times)

No, this is incorrect.

Nadal has at least 5 or more titles at MC, Madrid, Rome and Canada also.

What’s wrong with that matchup? It doesn’t really link much to this thread debate which is about 2006 Fed vs 2021 Djokovic at AO and the seasons ranking.

Nothing wrong with it just don't feel like answering lol.

Yea Djokovic was too erratic at times but not quite as much as Federer, who played slightly less points. Zverev was broken 6 times. Federer was broken 5 times. Does that also mean Federer couldn't hold onto a single break? Zverev made a lot more winners than Davydenko and a lot less errors, and in fact played a cleaner match than Djokovic himself. Slightly less winners but much less errors than Djokovic. That's why he was better and his serve was monstrous, averaging 129 on the 1st and 107 on the 2nd.

Well at the end of the day, Federer in Australia is not Djokovic.
Literally no proof Djokovic was less erratic.

And you're ignoring that the court was faster in 2021.

I'm comparing Fed to Djok and Davy to Zverev, read better guy. Davy did choke in the 3rd set TB that is true, I can't remember if choked at any other junctures though? The initial break back was due to forcing play from Federer.

What do you mean names? Federer was in form that summer. So there is actually some context here but why you choose to ignore how in great of a shape and form Federer was I don't get. He should be regarded as super tough opponent any day of the week and Novak faced him on grass and USO.

2021 AO "even worse competition". What the hell am I reading here. Raonic, Zverev, Karatsev (ok he was pretty green so that's a good SF opponent) and Medvedev in the final, Medvedev btw who was on a 20+ match win streak or something and sweeped masters and YECs and ATP cup before AO, and he continued to play that well at the AO. I don't care if the final was one sided, that's credit to Djokovic for showing up playing that well. Zverev is a tough opponent aswell and he pushed Novak real hard in that QF. A dangerous match considering how it unfolded. AO 21 was a dangerous and tough draw for Novak no doubt about it.
