Rank the Masters in order of prestige

Paris is unique. It had a different champion for 10 consecutive years beginning in 2003...Henman, Safin, Berdych, Davydenko, Nalbandian, Tsonga, Djokovic, Soderling, Federer, Ferrer. This season will have the 12th player to win Paris in the last 15 years.

Miami, Shanghai and Paris are all masters but they really do not have the same excitement around them and they do not exactly have ideal calendar slots during the season.

Pretty straightforward question. I'd guess IW and Miami are the top 2 because of the size of the draws and the higher prize money (although I think Shanghai offers almost as much prize money as IW). How about the others?

Lipton was stressed being the 5th major with all the top players and all 5 events; Martina Navratilova winning 3 in the Inaugural of '85! I'll always have a soft spot for IW, Rome, and Canada going back to the old days when it was on clay! Madrid is highly regarded now, but it was almost as schitzo as the USO & AO of the 70's going through date and surface changes! Late Masters 1000 events have always been undervalued since the top players were usually spent by then and the event had 2nd tier winners more often than not! :p ;)

Djokovic is the only one ever to defend the title which he did twice in 2014 and 2015.

I think he tried harder to win Masters' events since he knew he'd never catch up in MAJORS! He won 5 in 2011 and added 6 in 2015; his 2 best career seasons! :p ;)

well, yeah, it's where all the rich :D:Dholes go to stash their money and avoid paying taxes, what did you expect?
Well, if they got rich, they are not :D:Dholes.
By the way, I read that there are lots of rich people in Indian Wells, whose residents rank among the highest per capita income in the US.

I've heard that the stadium in Rome is really beautiful.
Personally, I had a great chance to go see Cincy 2017, but I didn't go because I'm an idiot. Planning to catch at least Indian Wells next year, if not the USO.

Top tier:

IW, Miami, Rome

Second tier:

MC, Canada, Cincy

Bottom tier:

Shanghai, Madrid, Paris

Miami and Rome have been considered major events in the past, IW is building up a huge rep these days as well - so those are the clear top 3 for me.

The second tier have a lot of history, I'd probably put Canada first with MC second and Cincy last in that tier.

The bottom tier just feel like lesser events compared to the others.

Have any players ever made any comments which might help us determine how they feel about the relative importance of Masters?

Ummm...no. The WTF is easily more prestigious than all of them. Always has been.
Even in the 1980s and 1990s, those indoors YEC matches were lit AF. All the big players took them seriously.

Are you a Rafa fan by any chance? :p

the WTF was bigger in the late 70's and 80's than now, besides the fact it was competing against other year end events, hence the currently throws so much prize money and points at it today.

as an event its bigger than a masters, but not as a tournament.

Why is it terrible? Genuine question.
Less chance of upsets. More chance of the better players coming through to the finals.
because one can lose but still win the whole thing.

its just too arcade-like and takes away from a true singles (elimination) competition.

Not sure why you are counting an exho along side the masters? It has nothing to do with them.

God tier: IW
Tier I: Rome, MC, Paris
In between: Miami
Tier II: Canada, Cincy
No one cares: Madrid, Shanghai

IW is god tier as its history includes pretty much the entire Open Era (i.e. real tennis) and the players consistently say it is the best. + the big draw

Rome and MC for the 5* history and the amazing show courts. Rome has hosted some amazing matches in the past decade. Rafa's domination of them adds mystique and prestige too. Paris as the only indoor event and long history. Also as it's the deciding tournament normally for the YEC qualification

Miami I feel is in decline but it does have some amazing history

For me the whole switching cities gimmick thing is a bit tacky and denigrates Canada. + it has no real stories or anything recently. Whoever is playing well that year wins it. Cincy I don't know an awful lot about I was going to put it in tier I but I think people are overrating it in this thread due to fedfan bias

The crowds in Madrid and Shanghai don't even care for the most part and the Madrid magic box thing is the lamest ever. Madrid especially bad because it stole its 1000 status from hamburg which is a cooler tournament

It's actually among the more recent Masters events. There are 5 M1000s that are older.

In order of age with date of foundation:

1. Canadian Masters (Rogers Cup): 1881
2. Monte Carlo: 1897
3. Cincinnati: 1899
4. Rome (Italian Open): 1930
5. Paris-Bercy: 1968
6. Indian Wells: 1974
7. Miami: 1985
8. Madrid: 2002
9. Shanghai: 2009

Cinci is high because no one ever skips it unless they are injured. It's the warm up event for the USO. Monte Carlo is skipped by a lot of players.

Don't know the exact ordering, but let's not forget that Rome was considered almost a slam for many years - people spoke of the 'old world' double of winning in Rome and at Roland Garros...

Not much love for Shanghai on this thread with most having it below half way. To me it looks the one tournament that's seriously on the rise. I'd have Rome then Shanghai...then the rest in any order with Madrid and Paris bringing up the rear.

Shanghai doesn't have the rich history that IW has.

IW and Rome are the top 2. Anything after these 2 can be put in any order.

Indian Wells may have a rich history, but it doesn't have a long one. It's only been played since 1974. To me the sameness in the 4 North American Masters events plus the USO detracts from them individually. While the European tournaments are nearly all on clay, the crowds there (esp Rome) can generate better atmosphere, at least watching on TV.

Indian Wells has a large enough (and nice enough) venue, with one of the biggest stadiums, and a big enough draw, with the biggest prize money, that it could literally be it’s own grand slam. If I’m not mistaken, it actually surpasses every other tournament (including the majors) in that all of their courts have Hawkeye.

Rome is next due to its longevity and the beauty of its main stadium.

Miami has a large draw and big prize money, but the facility suck compared to some of the others.

Shanghai is the best “up and coming” tournament facility wise, followed closely by Cincinnati.

Everything else is just kind of meh...

Canada below Shanghai? Really? That tourney just north of "The States" has a lot of history going back to when it was played on clay; Laver, Nastase, & Borg are winners! It actually goes back to the 19th century whereas Shanghai's new, more mercenary by just offering more money to hold a Masters event, and players usual spent by this time of the season! ;-(

I know some people think prestige means history but when your facility, attendance and money isn't there you're not very prestigious.

Indian Wells has the 2nd biggest stadium on the Masters circuit, wonderful accommodations, well attended and major competition. It's #1.

The worst is a battle between Canada & Madrid. Montreal significantly better than Toronto but still subpar for 1000 ranking points. But given better turnout and competition than Madrid it goes above. Paris often suffers for being so late in the year and recently a lot of lesser players winning it but facility is quite good.

1. Indian Wells
2. Miami
3. Rome
4. Cincinnati
5. Shanghai
6. Monte Carlo
7. Paris
8. Canada
9. Madrid

In these days I don't think it matters much anymore. Like I doubt someone would care which specific Masters they've won unless you're a Fed/Nadal/Djokovic trying to complete the set. What I'm saying is that no one will be like "oh I wish I'd win Rome some day" but people will still go "Yeah definitely Wimbledon is my favourite slam". Masters these days IMO are just ranked according to how the facilities are and how the playing field is. As such I think IW takes the top spot, Miami is towards the bottom, there are more and more complaints about the tournament from players in recent years.

IW
MC=Rome=Cinci
Shanghai
Madrid
Canada
Paris
Miami

The latter 3 especially have suffered from weak fields due to their slots in the tennis calendar.

Prize money and Draws. No way Miami is anywhere near bottom even if rats in the locker room. The stadium is in Key Biscayne and overall beautiful grounds with top money tied with Indian Wells and 6 round format for seeds.

The Lipton was a legit 5th Major when created in '85! It's unfortunate IW and it's CEO is going above and beyond in promoting the event! I've been a fan since old days of Newsweek sponsoring it! Madrid has been kind of schitzo with schedule movement and change of surface! Shanghai & Paris may determine the final YEC qualifiers, but they're usually just fodder for the top seeds! This YEC is going to be rather lame since so many elite players will be missing! The sponsors have to be pulling their hair out trying to make this event worth watching! With #1 decided for the season, where's the real suspense? :p ;)

Until quite recently, the players regularly voted it their favourite Masters event of the season.
