Just a good ol ranking of the 9 leaders at the Masters since 1990 formatting. Since Hamburg was replaced by Madrid at the same time and Madrid was replaced by Shanghai, this is a bit tricky but we'll be adding Roger's Hamburg titles collectively, the same with Murray the last edition of the indoor hard Madrid which ties him with Novak there although the 2008 Masters was indoor hard and Shanghai is outdoor hard that is technically the replacement.
Indian Wells Masters: Federer & Djokovic with 5
Miami Masters: Agassi & Djokovic with 6
Hamburg/Madrid Clay Masters: Federer with 6
Monte Carlo Masters: Nadal with 11
Rome Masters: Nadal with 8
Canada Masters: Lendl with 6
Cincinnati Masters: Federer with 7
Madrid/Shanghai Hard Masters: Djokovic & Murray with 4
Paris Masters: Djokovic with 4
My list:
1. Nadal obviously at MC is unmatched and this really is a rank that starts after this one.
2. Federer at Cincinnati because of the gap with Wilander 2nd at 4 and the tournament typically get a hefty showing as the traditional warm-up to USO. Many greats only won a single titles and guys like Sampras and Agassi only scored 3 despite long career and excellence on the surface.
3. Nadal at Rome, can't ignore the 8 titles and half came against Roger or Novak. First two were won Bo5, however further competition is spotty.
4. Agassi & Djokovic at Miami, lot of sixes but I go with the longer tournament and Bo5 finals for Agassi in some editions.
5. Federer & Djokovic at IW, longer tournament, more competitive than Canada or Hamburg/Madrid.
6. Federer at Hamburg/Madrid, 3 of the titles in Hamburg were Bo5 finals, plus two of the titles came against Nadal one at each location.
7. Lendl at Canada, you can't ignore the extra 2 titles but this has often been overshadowed by Cincinnati, still a lot of great champions.
8. Djokovic & Murray at Shanghai(Madrid), the field is typically pretty good at this tournament and both guys have done well.
9. Djokovic at Paris, last Masters of the year often missed by top players speaks for itself and tied lowest titles for leader.
Figures Novak leads at 4 of these and Federer at 3. Although I expect Nadal to surpass at Madrid very soon. The Canadian Masters is the 3rd oldest tennis tournament in the world, in case you didn't know and in all that time Lendl's 6 is the mark stands and I don't think Novak or Nadal who sit on 4 will break it, although they might tie. Lendl is also the only guy to threepeat at the event in the OE.
